Gilt decorated and lettered spine. Top of front cover, The Best Game Fish Of America. He must have received some negative comments to his pronouncement about the Black Bass in the 1st edition because in this book he again explained his feelings, "I am utterly opposed to the introduction of Black Bass into waters in which there is the remotest chance for the brook-trout or rainbow-trout to thrive. I yield to no one in love and admiration for the brook-trout. I was perfectly familiar with it before I ever saw a Black Bass; but I am not so blinded by prejudice but that I can share that love with the Black Bass, which for several reasons is destined to become the favorite game-fish of America." subject. In three parts as the 1st
edition. The Scientific and
Life History section is now only 121 pages. An article on the history of the
Kentucky Reel that had been published in Outing magazine for December
1900 has been added in its entirety to the section on reels. 2nd
impression. 3rd
impression 4th
impression 5th
impression 6th
impression 1913. 7th impression. Stewart & Kidd. Cincinnati OH. Green cloth. Design on cover and spine the same as
1904. This edition is not marked to
indicate a numbered impression.
I've searched for several years for the dates for the 2nd through 6th
impressions with absolutely no leads.
I'm beginning to wonder if they were ever identified as such. It seems there are two possibilities
to explain this failure. One, there
were six printings of the 1904 and none were identified by date of
publication. The second, maybe
someone at Stewart & Kidd just counted the previous printings before they
marked the 1915 as the 8th impression.
If you start with 1881 there were seven printings identified by a
different year before 1915. 1881,
1889, 1890, 1898, 1900, 1904, & 1913. 1915. 8th impression. Stewart & Kidd. Cincinnati OH. Green cloth. Design on cover and spine same as 1904. 1917. 9th impression. Stewart & Kidd. Cincinnati OH. Green cloth. Design on cover and spine same as 1904. 1918. 10th impression. Stewart & Kidd. 1919. 11th impression. Stewart & Kidd. Cincinnati OH. Green cloth. Design on cover and spine same as 1904. 1919. Three fourths Turkey Morocco. Stewart & Kidd. Cincinnati OH. 1920. 12th impression. Stewart & Kidd. Cincinnati OH. Green cloth. Cover same as 1904. Spine lettered but does not have
crossed hooks or Bass fly as on 1904.
I don’t know when the dust jackets started but this book had
one. I also saw a 1919 advertised
with a dust jacket. Other printings
through 1939 were also issued with dust jackets. 1920. Half black calf. Half black cloth. gilt tops. Stewart & Kidd. Cincinnati
OH. HENSHALL, JAMES ALEXANDER, MD - Book of the Black Bass. 8vo. 548 pages. 1923. Stewart & Kidd. Cincinnati OH. The title page reads, new edition -
revised and Rewritten. Includes
new illustrations and two color plates, one plate of Bass flies and the other
is Bass Bugs (The Bass Bugs were tied expressly for the plate by Fred M. Peet
of Chicago). Now has photos of Dr.
Henshall showing casting techniques instead of the drawings of him that were
used in the earlier editions.
Part I, comprising the scientific history of the Bass, was greatly
curtailed in this edition because he felt it was no longer necessary to go
into such detail. He finished all
three editions with the same words, "There is not much likelihood of there
being any occasion for adding anything to it during my life, and it is not
likely that anyone will add anything to it after I am gone." Actually the statement was first contained
in the supplement, which he considered part of the first edition. Gilt lettering on cover and
spine. Green cloth. 1923. Same as above except
"Appleton" shown on foot of spine. Stewart & Kidd still shown on the
title page. 1932. Reprint of 1923. Green cloth. Gilt lettering on cover and spine. Appleton. NY. 1939. Reprint of 1923. Green cloth. Gilt lettering on cover and spine. Appleton-Century. NY. HENSHALL, JAMES ALEXANDER, MD - Camping And Cruising In Florida. 8vo. xvi, 248 pages. 1884. Robert Clarke. Cincinnati OH. Yellow cloth. Black title and decorated cover. Gilt decorated and lettered spine. Not a whole lot on Black Bass but does
mention them several times.
Mentions that Dr. Henshall caught his largest Bass (20 pounds) in
Florida on live bait. The first part
of the book: Cruise of the Blue Wing, covers a trip that he made to
Florida in 1878 with five of his patients.
He had prescribed the outdoors for their health, they hunted, fished,
camped, and cruised, and all returned home with their ills cured. The second part: Cruise of the Rambler,
covers the same type of trip except on this one he took his ailing wife. He did much fishing but only mentions
the Black Bass a few times. He
tells of taking Bass to 8 pounds on the fly rod and later a nine pounder on the
fly rod. Once they took Bass from 2
to 14 pounds until they tired of catching them. Much of the material in this book was
previously printed in Forest & Stream or America Field, under
his pseudonym, Oconomowoc.
Most of the illustrations are from original pen and ink drawings by
George W. Potter. Includes a 6 page
ad for Book of the Black Bass and 12 page list of Clarke's other
books. Unusual for 1884 this book
was issued with a dust jacket. 1884
available in a digitized version for free download on the web at
books.google.com. 1884. Half morocco. Marbled boards. Robert Clarke. Cincinnati OH. 1888. Evidently the last printing by Clarke
since the plates for this book were also destroyed in the fire at the Robert
Clarke Co. In his autobiography
Henshall said that this book went through several printings. Robert Clarke. Cincinnati OH. 1991.

than any other author because I consider him so important in the history
of Black Bass literature. Since
this book is dedicated to him I have also listed items that do not concern
Black Bass and in one case a non angling book. Dr. Henshall's early books were published by
his friend Robert Clarke. Clarke
was a book collector himself, building a collection of several thousand volumes
on Americana, Scottiana, archaeology, natural history and other subjects. In 1892 Clarke sold some fifteen hundred
books on fish, fish culture, and angling to the Newberry Library in
Chicago. The collection was
later transferred to the Field Museum of Natural History. Charles P. Goldey in the 1893, 3rd
edition of The Sportsman’s Directory And Year Book included this
when writing about the angling exhibit at the Columbian Exposition, there
were exhibited "a completed collection of 100 editions of Izaak Walton
plus the most extensive collection of angling and fishing books in the world,
by Robert Clarke of Cincinnati, who spent 40 years gathering them
together." Clarke was one of
the last of the large Cincinnati publishers. In the days before the railroads moved
west and until about the end of the Civil War, Cincinnati was the gateway to
the west and many large publishers were located there. The Clarke Co. suffered heavy losses
from a fire in 1903, this was the fire that destroyed the stereotype plates for
the first three Henshall books. The
company never fully recovered from the fire and control was gained in 1905 by
Jay F. Fanning, a law book publisher of Norwalk, Ohio. The Robert Clarke Co. was dissolved in a
receiver's sale in 1909 and was divided between two bidders. The miscellaneous stock and the right to
use the company name was purchased by W. K. Stewart of Indianapolis, later
senior partner of Stewart & Kidd of Cincinnati. Until the summer of 1911 the business
was run as the Robert Clarke Book store, for the next three years the name was
The Robert Clarke Book Store, Stewart Kidd Company, after which the Clarke name
was dropped. In 1924 the publishing
portion of Stewart & Kidd was purchased by Appleton. Kidd took over operation of the book
store and ran it for several years under his own name. Around 1933, Appleton merged with the
Century Co. I have read that at the
time of the merger, 85,000 copies of Book of the Black Bass had already
been printed, probably the best thing that Appleton had going for
them. In the late 1940s, probably
1948, Appleton Century bought the stocks of F. S. Crofts. In 1980, I wrote to
Appleton-Century-Crofts seeking information on Dr. Henshall and his
books. They informed me that they
no longer publish anything other than nursing and medical books. The trade books of A-C-C had been
obtained by Hawthorne Books.
Hawthorne Books was taken over by Elsevier/Dutton who kindly researched
their files for me and reported back that they had no record of either Dr.
Henshall or his books. HENSHALL, JAMES ALEXANDER, MD – Evolution Of the “Kentucky

United States Fish Commission, Volume ix, For 1889. The months of February, March, and
April, 1889, were spent by Henshall in making an ichthyologic exploration of
the southern coast of Florida, together with the U.S. Fish Commission schooner
Grampus. HENSHALL, JAMES ALEXANDER, MD - Notes On Fishes Collected In Florida

February, and March, 1892, the writer was engaged in collecting a series of the
salt-water fishes of Florida for use in preparing the exhibit of the U. S. Fish
Commission at the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893." Reprinted 1987. HENSHALL, JAMES ALEXANDER, MD - A Plea For The Development And Protection

Notes On The Game Fishes. 8vo. 12 pages. 1906. University of Montana. Missoula MT. A descriptive paragraph on Largemouth
and Smallmouth Bass. Indicates that
Bass had been planted in the western portion of the state where the waters were
warmer. He also says “The
colder waters of the eastern part of the state are totally unsuited to black
bass; moreover, they should never be planted in ponds or streams containing
trout.” Four pages are
devoted to trout, and grayling with a short paragraph on the Rocky Mountain
whitefish. Reprinted 1985. HENSHALL, JAMES ALEXANDER, MD - Culture Of The Montana Grayling. 4to. 7 pages. 1907. Fisheries Document #628. U. S. Dept. of Commerce and Labor. Washington DC. Softbound. HENSHALL, JAMES ALEXANDER, MD - Scientific Papers On Fishes by
David Starr Jordan, M.D., collected by James A. Henshall. - 8vo - variously
paginated, over 480 pages.
1884. Cynthiana KY. 18 papers that were previously printed
by different scientific journals between 1874 and 1878. Title page and index hand lettered by
Henshall. Also, each paper has a
hand lettered title page. There is
no doubt that Henshall used these papers in writing the 1st section to Book
of the Black Bass, there are notations and corrections throughout the
papers, all in Henshall's hand. A
unique, one of a kind, book. Gilt
lettering on spine with Henshall shown as publisher. Title page has Henshall's signature and
stamp. There is also a notation to
show the book was owned by Al Foss in 1929. Title listed above is on spine of book,
hand written title page shows title as Scientific Papers On Ichthyology. HENSHALL, JAMES ALEXANDER, MD - Ye Gods And Little Fishes. A Travesty On The Argonautic Expedition In Quest Of The Golden Fleece. 8vo. 213 pages. 1900. Robert Clarke. Cincinnati OH. Designs by J. L. Ludlow with full page borders throughout the book. Based on The Argonautica of Appolonious Rhodius, an epic poet of the late 3rd century and early 2nd century, B. C. Wetzel said, "Characterized throughout by keen wit & pungent satire." A different look at Dr. Henshall and his subtle sense of humor. Several mentions of angling. He has the fair Atalanta invent the revolving spoon and Hercules designs the first rod and reel. He even squeezed in conservation, Jason and his crew keep only the large fish and return the small ones to the water. Also makes some social comment and provides more evidence of his distrust of politicians, Circe turns fish and game hogs, liars, and crooked politicians into pigs, "And so the herd have all, for some good cause, Been changed from men to hogs by Nature's Laws. The change was slight, for they were hogs before; On two legs walked, where now they walk on four; The difference then, I think you'll surely find, is only in degree, and not in kind." Not an angling book but there seems to be increased interest over the past couple of years. Jim and Judy Bowman probably had a lot to do with that. "Dr. James Alexander Henshall, Honorary National President of the Izaak Walton League of America, and America's leading authority on fish, especially the black bass, died at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio, five minutes before hundreds of delegates to the third national convention in Chicago arose and cheered his reelection to office. "When the cheering had subsided and the chairman was proceeding with the business at hand, a messenger brought a telegram announcing Dr. Henshall's death. "The assembled delegates were stunned. They arose and with bowed heads stood in silent tribute to the memory of a man who for fifty years had devoted his life to the work of conserving our wild places and wild things for the boys and girls to come. A man who carried on for the past twenty years under physical conditions that would have broken the hearts of strong men; a man eighty-nine years old, whose eyesight had failed and who, though confined to his bed for the past five months, waged an heroic battle in OUTDOOR AMERICA against further pollution of the inland and coastal waters of this country." Bibliotheca Piscatoria by Westwood and Satchell, 1883, lists Book of the Black Bass by Henshall and shows publisher as Orange Judd Co. NY. 1882. In May 1925 in the notice of Henshall's death, Forest and Stream credited him with the book title Florida Fish and Fishing. One section of Favorite Fish and Fishing does have that title, was it published in book form? In addition to those two books, Outdoor America magazine, May 1925, also listed Favorite Game Fish of Inland Waters and his autobiography as published books. In his article on Dr. Henshall in Sporting Classics, Vol. I, Issue 6, 1982, Mike Creel credited him with the book Favorite Game Fish Of Inland Waters, 1922. From what I have been able to find about this title, it was announced but never published. Outing magazine published a list of Outing Handbooks, which included the title Bass and Bass Fishing by Dr. Henshall. Evidently this book was never published. Most of their handbooks were published in the early 1900's before World War I. A Renowned Piscator (State Marker 651, Cynthiana, S. of bridge, US 27, Harrison Co.) HENSHALL, DR.
