Bass Anglers Sportsman Society

Books of the Black Bass

extracted from Draft, 5th Edition, Books of the Black Bass (c)2008

Books published by or for Bass Anglers Sportsman Society

I've added this page both to answer questions about books published by B.A.S.S. and in the hope you might know of something I don't have listed.  A few years back the marketing department at B.A.S.S. promised to help me verify my list . They never delivered so I'm resorting to this method.  So please, if you know of something that should be included here, let me know about it.  After being taken over by ESPN the old abbreviation and name (B.A.S.S. & Bass Anglers Sportsman Society) were changed to BASS.  I have been working at changing some of the newer entries but have not completed the process yet.

BASHLINE, SYLVIA - Cleaning & Cooking Fish - 4to.  160 pages.  2005.  BASS.  Montgomery AL.  Same as the book published by Publication Arts, Inc. in 1982 with no reference to the fact that it was previously published.  One of the Ultimate Bass Fishing Library.  Simulated red leather cover with gold embossed letters on cover and spine, four color photos inlaid on front cover.  Front cover says Special Cooking Edition.

BASS ANGLERS SPORTSMAN SOCIETY - BASSMaster 1981. Description same as above. Somehow my name was left off the list for this one and by the time we had it straightened out they had run out. They refunded my money but I would have rather had the book. I was told they'd try to find me a copy but I never heard from them again after that. There was an edition scheduled for 1982 but it was canceled because of high costs.  In 2000 I found one for auction on eBay so I bought it and decided to let this thing end although I was still pissed at B.A.S.S.

BASS ANGLERS SPORTSMAN SOCIETY - Bassmaster Fishing Trivia Game. Instructions, Questions & Answers. 16mo. 1985(c). 2 volumes, pages numbered 1-200 and 201-408. Orange Alps Games. Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Softbound. Questions are mostly about Bass or Bass fishing.

Sub title says "Proven" on front cover and "Reliable" on title page. Illustrated with black and white drawings. Covers three types of Bass lures, spinner-baits, crankbaits, and crawfish. I saw this advertised with a membership promotion and wrote to see if I could buy a copy. They charged me $8.00 and I decided not to buy any more promotional items after that. On the other hand this is the type of booklet that will never show up in a book dealers catalog and I'd never see it. So I guess I'm stuck with these exorbitant charges.

HENSHALL, JAMES ALEXANDER, MD - More About The Black Bass; Being A Supplement To The Book Of The Black Bass.  8vo.  viii, 204 pages.  1889.  Robert Clarke.  Cincinnati OH.  Follows the same format and has the same chapter headings as Book of the Black Bass.  A necessary companion to the 1st edition.  Green cloth.  Gilt Bass on cover.  Cover lettered in black.  Gilt decorated and lettered spine.  Top of front cover, The Best Game Fish Of America.  He must have received some negative comments to his pronouncement about the Black Bass in the 1st edition because in this book he again explained his feelings, "I am utterly opposed to the introduction of Black Bass into waters in which there is the remotest chance for the brook-trout or rainbow-trout to thrive. I yield to no one in love and admiration for the brook-trout.  I was perfectly familiar with it before I ever saw a Black Bass; but I am not so blinded by prejudice but that I can share that love with the Black Bass, which for several reasons is destined to become the favorite game-fish of America."  Matched set with 1889 Book of the Black Bass, except quote at head of cover.  1989.  Facsimile of 1889 edition.  Bass Anglers Sportsman Society.  Montgomery Al.  Embossed gray leatherette cover with gold stamping on cover and spine.  Second printing by B.A.S.S., © 1989.  Same description.

JONES, KEITH A., Ph.D.Knowing Bass: The Scientific Approach to Catching More Fish.  8vo.  Xxi, 298 pages.  2002.  BASS. Lake Buena Vista FL. -- Lyons Press/Globe Pequot Press.  Guilford CT.   Illustrated with photos, graphs, and drawings.  Mostly in color.   Dr. Jones is a scientist who provides the how, when and where of Bass behavior.  He covers all the senses and how they influence Bass behavior.   A Special Edition of the Ultimate Bass Fishing Library.  Does not include the author’s name on the cover or title page.  Shame – shame!  Also BASS didn’t bother to include the date they printed the book, I received mine in May 2008.  Simulated red leather cover with gilt lettering and BASS emblem on cover and spine, one color photo inlaid on front cover.

LAMB, JACK - How To Catch Game Fish. 12mo. 190 pages. 1937(c). Privately printed. No place shown, Ft. Worth TX? The first four copies of this title that I acquired all have different covers. Two are in stiff blue soft covers with different styles of type used on the cover and with a different paper used for interior pages. One is in stiff brown soft covers and other in red cloth covered limp boards. The interior of my four copies are the same except that Lamb's address in Ft. Worth is shown on the last page of the edition in brown soft covers and in one of the editions in blue soft covers. The other two books do not contain his address. This book was also issued in black leatherette. Author called himself, The Old Maestro of Bass Fishing. I obtained a later printing in blue soft cover with a Fort Worth, Texas, street address on the last page instead of the PO Box shown in the two printings listed above. Several earlier photos have been replaced with new ones, the new photos show him demonstrating his casting techniques, lecturing in Florida, holding up a couple of large trout he caught in Alaska, him with a large King salmon taken off the coast of British Columbia, and showing off a good stringer of Bass taken from Lake Texoma. Also, the textured paper used for the soft covers is a two sided paper and is light blue on the outside and white on the inside. On all of the earlier editions I have seen the soft covers are the same color inside and out. This printing had to be 1944 or later because Ripley's Believe It Or Not for July 16, 1944 has replaced the publisher's Preface that is on page 4 of all the other copies that I have. Ripley featured Lamb as The Compleat Angler with a drawing of him holding his rod in one hand and a big Bass in the other. A footnote has been added to inform us that "Jack Lamb began fishing in 1910 and did not miss fishing daily for 17 years. He caught and turned back more than 60,000 game fish during that period, and 40,000 more since then." Obviously, Lamb had the book reprinted whenever he needed new copies. He traveled around the country giving slide and movie presentations on angling. He had a public relations job with Gulf Oil and he made his living by conducting fishing seminars at or for Gulf gas stations. The late Bill Ruck of Little Rock AR told me that as a youngster he had attended shows put on by Lamb and was impressed by him both as an angler and as a gentleman. Facsimile reprint of the 1937 edition by Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, 1990, red leatherette with gold embossed stamping on spine and front cover. I wrote a letter to B.A.S.S. suggesting that this reprint was a good idea but they should have used one of the other titles of this book, How to Catch Ol' John Bass or Black Bass.  I guess they didn't agree with me because they never bothered to answer my letter.  In fact, I sent Ellison a copy of Books of the Black Bass to help him select future classics and that letter wasn't acknowledged either.  The story of my life where B.A.S.S. is concerned.
