BOOKS OF THE BLACK BASS

LINKS to Bass Books

Here are a few sites with info on Bass books. There are an awful lot of sites out there on fishing books and I'm providing a small list that you might find interesting and useful. Amazon and Barnes & Noble have signed contracts with an awful lot of people and you'll continually find web sites that advertise fishing books or Bass books and you end up with details from either Amazon or Barnes & Noble. You might as well just go to the source. If you know of a site with access to Bass books and think it would be useful here please tell me about it. I'm especially interested in those books that might not get national exposure.

As you wander around my pages you'll find a lot of references to places where you can buy books.  I'd like to state up front that I am not affiliated with any of them and am only offering free information.

50 Years of Shallow-Water Bass Angling  Texas spinnerbait expert Jack Lewis’s recent book.

The Advanced Book Exchange Home Page a site that lists books from out-of-print booksellers. Much like Albris and Bibliofind listed below, there are always several hundred Bass books listed here.

Alibris  A web site for out of print booksellers. Do a search here for "Bass Fishing" and you'll come up with four or five hundred Bass books being offered by booksellers from around the U.S. and Canada. This site was formerly known as Interloc and recently merged with Bibliocity.com.

Allison, LouBass Rigs & Lures a new e-Book that features lures you can make from stuff in your tackle box.  Modifications are well explained and well illustrated with color drawings by the author.  At 54 pages it is bigger than many of the Bass e-Books you find on the web.  This one also allows you to make a hard copy instead of limiting you to reading it on your computer.

Amazon  They advertise they're the biggest but that is just because they use Books in Print as their catalog. Search here and get a big list of Bass books at discount prices. I usually just do a search for the words "Bass fishing." When I have a lot of time I do searches for: "Black Bass" - "Fishing" - "Freshwater Fishing" - "Largemouth Bass" and "Smallmouth Bass." They turn up mostly the same books but are worthwhile because some books aren't cross referenced into all the categories.

Barker, Larry & Lenny CrispinoFishing Florida’s Top 10 Bass Lakes Volume I Lake Tarpon

Barker, Larry & Mark Fran – Fishing Florida’s Top 12 Bass Lakes Volume II Lake Okeechoee.

Barnes and Noble

They have more books on the shelf than Amazon but both use Books in Print as their online catalog. Barnes and Noble also includes out-of-print books from other booksellers on their Web site. Many of the prices for out of print books seemed unreasonably high to me.

Bass Anglers Sportsman Society  In an effort to verify the information I have on books published by B.A.S.S. I've added a page that is devoted to their books.

Bass Books This is a page I've added that is nothing but a list of Black Bass books running from 1791 to present time along with a few upcoming books. Books that I have copies of in my collection are marked. Not that it means anything, just my way of keeping track of my collection. This is the most complete list of Bass books ever published, anywhere!

Bass Wives  The Truth About Being a Bass Fisherman's Wife is a new book by Aris Whittier.

Bibliofind  Nine million old, used and rare books offered here for sale by thousands of booksellers around the world make this the largest bookselling site on the Web.

Catching Spotted Bass  - Lake Lanier guide, Mack Farr's book on the Spotted Bass.  So far as I know this is the only how-to book ever published on this fish.  You can order it from his web site.

Chapters  A Canadian chain much like Barnes & Noble or Borders in this country.  A source for Canadian books or U. S. books if you live in Canada and want to buy closer to home.

Dr. James Alexander Henshall – The Autobiography of If you are interested in Dr. Henshall here is his autobiography.  He led a very interesting life.

Terry Hodges - A Rookie’s Guide to Bass Fishing  A new book by a retired California Game Warden.

Houston, Jimmy - Hooked for Life. 8vo. 129 pages. 1999. J. Countryman Books/Thomas Nelson Co. Nashville TN. Mentions a couple of other species but this is definitely a Bass book. Each chapter begins with a quote from the scriptures and ends with a prayer. Profusely illustrated with color photos, about half of them include a Bass and the others show Jimmy in his boat.  HOOKED FOR LIFE

Houston, Jimmy - The Reel Line: An Angler's Guide to the Ultimate Catch.  8vo. 127 pages. 2001. J. Countryman/Thomas Nelson Co. Nashville TN. Consists of 30 short chapters of Bass fishing tips. Fishing chapters also include spiritual thoughts by Jimmy. At the end of each tip is a one page inspirational reading with a scripture quotation, authored by Dr. Andy Bowman, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Keys, Oklahoma. Illustrated with color photos, many are full page, like the above book most of them are either of Jimmy fishing in his boat or of a leaping Bass.  THE REEL LINE

If you're interested in searching the LOC then go there in the daytime and write down their hours - they do close at night.

Gregg Munck - Trophy Fishing Secrets.  A Book by Arizona’s big Bass and Walleye expert.  If you want to verify his status as a trophy hunter just check the photos on his website.

Jack Noon's book  The Bassing of New Hampshire covers the coming of Black Bass to New Hampshire and how they are doing today.  Good history, with lots of old Bass photos, art, ads, etc.  Be nice if we had one of these for every state.

The Fabulous Swimming Worm tells how to rig and fish the Swimming Worm and includes a sample worm rigged by Jim.  Jim says there are only two skills involved in fishing the Swimming Worm.  The proper rigging and knowing when to set the hook.  So, You Want To Be An Outdoor Writer, is exactly as the title suggests with coverage of the subjects you need to know about and also includes sample articles written by Jim. THE HUNGRY, but lazy, MAN'S RECIPE BOOK and other assorted stuff is a great cookbook. Humorous with a running commentary by Jim, illustrated with cartoon drawings, with lots of artery clogging recipes. I've had a copy of the draft to this one that Jim gave me since 1997 and I've just about worn it out paging through it.

Powerhand Baitcasting -- you can only buy this book direct from the author, Richard Forhan, and here is his web site.  Not just a casting book, this is a complete book on Bass fishing.

Ray Scott Outdoors  You can order his book Bass Boss here.  He seems to have spent a lot of money with a commercial site builder.  Includes background wildlife sounds but the thing loads to slow for me.  Maybe someday when I can afford a better system I'll go back.  Every Bass angler should have a copy of his book because of the historical aspects.  I ordered a copy of the limited edition before the book was released and still ended up with #1,143.  Don't know if he saved a lot for his personal appearances or if his office personnel just didn't care.  I've never met Ray but have been told he is very personable.  He took about five minutes to hold a conversation with my eight year old grandson before personalizing his copy of Bass Boss.  All this while the line to shake his hand and get his autograph was steadily growing longer.  Andrew's school has an extra credit reading program and he recently told me he is going to recommend they add Bass Boss to the approved reading list.

Shoal Bass A New Species of Bass, Micropterus cataractae (Teleostei: Centrarchidae), from the Apalachicola River Basin in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.  A new book published by Florida Museum of Natural History.
