Subject: big problems around Staley Settlement
Dear Avel,
I first contacted you on 11/15/04 asking for help in getting the answer
to some questions regarding the vast savings the State has seen through the
misuse of the Staley Settlement funding. At the end of November you called me
at home asking if I'd mind if you put these questions on your letterhead to see
if you could get the answers. I called your office around the 12th of
December and left a message asking if you'd gotten anywhere. The following day
I
received a call from your assistant, Sean Cruz, saying that I'd be hearing from
you
"in the next few days" with the names of some people who could
provide the
answers. I told him I'd be interested to find out who these people were
since I had already contacted several people who either refused or interfered
in
DAWG's attempt to get the answers -- which is what
led me to you.
Although answers to these questions continue to be critical to the work
of securing the civil rights of adults with developmental disabilities in
Oregon, I've
heard nothing from you or your office since then. As I mentioned in
my first email to you, we've been seeking the answers to these questions
since last July, which is half a year ago. We don't believe there is any reason
why
we can't get the answers other than a deliberate effort to hide the truth
from us.
I want to be clear that this is a civil rights issue. As we approach
the celebration of the birthday of this country's greatest civil rights
activist, I implore you to step up to
the plate and follow through on what you
originally said you would do. There are over 2000 members of a minority
group who
are being singled out for discrimination by the State of Oregon
-- most of
them in the Portland
area. I ask that you act quickly to do everything within
your power to get the answers to our questions so that justice can finally be
served for citizens who have already waited too long.
I will call you today between 12:00 - 12:30 to follow up on this email.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
David McDonald
