TWIN PORTS BUSES & TROLLEYS
Twin Ports Buses and Trolleys Of The Past & Present
This page is dedicated to the memory of my father, Howard Johnson, who drove buses in the Twin Ports from February 1955-May 1991.
I see the memories as he lay in rest,
he was a DTA driver, and one of the best.
He worked there so long; more than thirty six years,
he drove buses back when you had to shift gears.
His record for safety was very impeccable,
his warm hearted nature is what made him respectable.
He was "Driver Of The Month" in July of Eighty Four,
and that award put him in contention for more.
When that year ended and came to a close,
there were twelve in the running; only one would be chose.
It was Howard Johnson they picked; he best fit the mold,
of "Driver Of The Year", the most prestigious to hold.
He had a smile for everyone, a heart as pure as gold.
To those who knew and loved him, his memory will never grow old.
So sleep on dear father, sleep on and take thy rest;
I loved you, but God loved you best.
Howard Gordon Johnson

If you like buses as much as I do, you should enjoy these pages. Growing up here in Duluth, Minnesota, I rode the bus all the time. My father drove bus for over 36 years for the Duluth Transit Authority and the former Duluth/Superior Transit Company, and I would really get a kick out of going for a ride with him as a kid. Now, since 1993, I am fortunate enough to be driving for the DTA myself. The following is a picture history of public transit here in the Twin Ports. Enjoy the history pictures, and be sure to check out my slideshow of various DST & DTA pictures of buses & trolleys from the past and street cars & trolleys from old downtown. I have dozens of these old pictures, and I will try to change them regularly. If you have any old bus pictures from Duluth, I would love to see them for possible posting on this site. E-mail me with the info, and I'll see what I can do.
