BBC INTERVIEW August 7, 2003
BBC: You're So Vain, well, it was one of the most enduring songs in pop music but Carly Simon has always kept very tight lipped about who You're So Vain is actually about. Now she's going to tell her secret to a TV executive who's given $50,000 to charity for the the privilege. Sue Coll from Ohio is one of Carly Simon's biggest fans, aren't you Sue?
ME: Yes, I am.
BBC: All right, so who is this TV executive & do we trust him to keep it a secret?
ME: Yes, he will keep it a secret, in fact he stated that he made the bid so that he could keep it a secret and Carly did not have to reveal it to a stranger.
BBC: Why do you think she's done this, because a lot of speculation has gone on about who this is about, she could have just ended it years ago, couldn't she?
ME; Yeah, she could have but I think it's really a feather in her cap that she didn't, everybody is still interested after 30 years and everybody always asks and it's the main thing that they ask. So it was a very smart move on her part. I don't know why she didn't tell, she says that it's a great ego trip for her when people ask her & for that reason she's never telling.
BBC: I always heard that Kris Kristoffersen was a possible. Who else, who were the other suspects?
ME: That would be Mick Jagger, Warren Beatty & Cat Stevens.
BBC: Who's your money on?
ME: Pardon me.
BBC:Who's your money on?
ME: If I had to pick one, it would be Warren Beatty. Because of the lyrics, the apricot scarf, the hat dipped below one eye & the gavotte. But Carly has always said that it was a composite of many people.
BBC: Right, now this auction took place, am I right in saying that this auction took place on ebay?
ME: No it took place on Martha's Vineyard.
BBC: Oh Martha's Vineyard, okay.
ME: At the Possible Dreams Auction.
BBC: Okay and how many Carly Simon fans were there? Is this TV executive a proper Carly Simon fan?
ME: Yes he is, I don't know how many Carly Simon fans were there. But she always walks away with the highest bid. There's a lot of information at CarlySimon.com.
BBC: Tell me about the website, what kind of people come to your website?
ME: It's not my website, CarlySimon.com is Carly's offical website and I'm just a Carly Simon fan.
BBC: Okay, well that's good enough for us, we're glad to have you.
ME: At CarlySimon.com there's also a You're So Vain page about everybody that's ever asked about the song and it shows the pictures of all the contenders.
BBC: What are the other Carly Simon songs that have made her legendary?
ME: Oh in the beginning it would be, to me, No Secrets, The Right Thing To Do, Nobody Does It Better, I mean I could probably go on and on and on . I like her more obscure songs, her non-hits.
BBC: Do you kind of wish a little bit, you might be this TVexecutive and it might be your ear that the answer to that big mystery actually gets whispered?
ME: Do I , I'm sorry, I didn't understand you.
BBC: Do you kind of wish you were in the shoes of the TV executive and you would get to know who it's about? Or would that ruin it for you?
ME: Oh I don't know, you know I never have been that curious about it. But I think it's really smart that she's kept it a secret. And I think it's given intrigue and that's why everyone is hanging on.
BBC: Well Sue Coll from Ohio, one of Carly Simon's biggest fans, thank you very much indeed.
