`Battlestar' shines: Sci Fi's remake blasts off into the bright direction
By John Ruch
Friday, January 14, 2005
The Sci Fi Channel's brilliantly reinvented ``Battlestar Galactica'' - a terrific miniseries in 2003 - is now the full series it deserves to be. If it's given the room to grow that the 1978 original never got, it could end up being one of the best sci-fi television outings ever. An intelligent, attention-demanding, character-driven show, it marks a maturing of the sci-fi series genre. (Boston Herald)

"Edward James Olmos' understated yet overpowering work as the bespectacled Galactica Commander Adama makes this good series a great one." (St. Paul Pioneer Press)

["Battlestar Galactica"] has revolutionized science fiction on television, elevating a genre that is often dismissed as cheesy escapist fantasy into the ranks of the most serious primetime dramas. (LA Times)

Sci-Fi's brilliant "Battle-star Galactica" [is] an essential pick at 10 p.m. .... In the case of "Battlestar Galactica," which new viewers can pick up quickly enough, it makes network fare seem pedestrian. ( The San Francisco Chronicle)

This is television at its most brilliant and cinematic. The superb acting, the innovative direction, the dense scripts, the pitch-perfect music, the gorgeous photography, plus the ability to put this together consistently week after week -- all of it puts most mainstream films to shame.

"Galactica" ended up the No. 1 show on cable in key demographics for its second season premiere and repeated its win for the third season premier.

"I had no desire [to do more science fiction], until I read the Galactica script, which made me get involved. But I told them, if they showed one four-eyed monster or alien, I was going to faint on camera, and then I'd leave the show. I don't want to be in that form of theatricality. They said, 'No, it's a dramatic series, as dramatic as West Wing or NYPD Blue.' It's a different genre."

[On his initial reaction to the BSG miniseries script]
I thought it was thoroughly impressive, I was surprised and impressed by the construction of the piece. It was just excellent drama. It could be "The West Wing," it could be "NYPD Blue," "CSI," it's in that realm. It hit as hard as any drama. I forgot about genre. It blew me out of the water. Not to say that drama hasn't been inside "Star Trek" and sci fi, but for some reason, this --- the realistic basis of this – that's what makes it different. You can relate to it on a visceral level. It just feels gritty. It feels like it's happening right now. That's what really made it come alive for a lot of people."

[On Commander Adama's journey ]
"Basically this is a guy who has been able to maintain and sustain a sense of calmness up until the point where he gets shot, then things change for him.... he's that much more vulnerable. He dies twice on the operating table. He goes to a place where only people who have died can go. [Those who've had near-death or "death' experiences] their perspective on life changes. They're more in touch with what they're feeling. They're much more emotional."

[On Commander Adama's relationship with his son, Lee "Apollo" Adama]
"This is [a relationship] that will always have tension to it. There are too many unresolved moments, because of various situations. I don't think he'll ever really be able to push forward and resolve all the issues with his son, or with the president. They're very different. There will always be some element of bitterness on everyone's part. I think the job [the writers] is doing is extraordinary. They pull out all the stops [in Season 2]. My character has a tremendously different life when he comes back from being dead, emotionally, he's just completely traumatized. It causes him to do things [he wouldn't have done before]."

"Battlestar Galactica" not only is one of the best science fiction shows on television, it also is a "reimagining" that surpasses the original. If the season premiere is any indication, "Battlestar" fans are in for another riveting, nail-biting journey as they join the ragtag survivors searching for refuge. (Cleveland Plain Dealer)
