Brand New for November 2002

Come see my newest web page online with a dozen new photographs of my travels in Israel. There may not be any dachshunds visible, but I think you might find the photos and the text of my time in Jerusalem and in other places of interest. Check it out at Israel Travel Photographs

Greetings from San Juan island in Washington state

My ex-husband and I moved four years ago from Oregon to the San Juan islands in Washington near the Canadian border. It is a beautiful place surrounded by saltwater and nature.

My driving interests are my love of nature and the seashore. I love to explore new beaches and hiking trails. There are few beaches or trails on the Oregon coast that I haven't been to repeatedly. But even if I have been there before, I still am overjoyed to be at the seashore and walking the long deserted beaches. I especially love the lighthouses on the coast and find them extremely photogenic.

Of cource there is much to see in the Pacific Northwest beyond the coast. To see more photographs from other areas of Oregon, Washington or British Columbia check out my other personal web pages...many of which you will listed below....on many you will find dachshunds posed in front of magnificent scenery of the northwest. Here is a photo that doesn't have wiener dogs in it, but shows a unique Washington sight which is the the troll sculpture under a bridge near Seattle in the Fremont area. I'm posed on one of the hands to show the scale of its size. Under its other hand is a real VW beetle car.

I have been very interested in nature, animals and the enviroment since I was a child growing up in a rural area. I spend most of my days outside and love to watch the birds and listen to the waves or the wind. It's always been very important to me to be around water. When I was a child we had a small river outside our back door and a large lake across the street from us. Now I live on an island with a peaceful view of a saltwater bay. I have been very supportive of enviromental groups for many years. Here are links to some of my favorite enviromental or nature organizations:

I love to travel and have traveled extensively in over 60 countries, many more than once. My longest single trip was in 1990 when my ex-husband and I bought a VW van in Holland and travelled throughout Europe for over 8 months. This trip was very important to me. Most of the time we stayed with Servas families, which was a very enriching cultural experience. Here is a link to the Servas web site if you'd like to find out more.

Welcome to SERVAS

Of all the countries I have been in I would say my favorites are Morocco and the People's Republic of China. I felt like I had gone back in time when I visited those two countries, and I found that very exotic and exciting.

Below is a photo taken of me May 1998 at my favorite city in the world, Venice Italy. This was my fourth week long visit there.

Although I haven't ridden horses now in many years, I used to love to ride and took riding lessons when I was a child. This photo of me was taken in Hawaii when I went on a day long horseback ride through Haleakala National Park on Maui island.

Since November 2000 I have become interested in politics and the United States government. Here are some good web sites to check into if you want current real news:

Another new thing I got involved in recently has been acting in a local community theater plays. I had never been in a play before, not even in high school. I had sung a song from "Guys and Dolls" in a musical theater class I took years ago at Southern Oregon University when we lived in Ashland and people in the class thought I did a great job with that song. So when I saw newspaper ads for auditions for "Guys and Dolls" here on San Juan I decided to risk it and try out. I ended up with one of only 3 female speaking parts in the play and spent most of the Winter and Spring of 2000 in rehearsals or the run of the play. Here are a few photographs from the play taken during a dress rehearsal of the "Rocking the Boat" scene. I played the character General Cartwright, head of the Save a Soul Mission.

Just last month I was in a comic George Kaufmann short play at the theater playing a bellhop who's happy to announce a hotel fire. Here's a photograph of the cast from that play...I think you can figure out which one I am from the bellhop uniform.

I met my ex-husband in 1988 at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur California where we both were working. I was there for over 2 1/2 years and that was an extremely wonderful and important part of my life. I still go back to take workshops there at as often as I can.......not often enough as I wish though. It's a very special and powerful location where many open hearted people live or visit. The location is spectacular and I can't recommend a visit there too highly. A stay of a month or more will change your life.

I am also interested in film, although no where near as much as I used to be. I have an Master's Degree in Cinema from Univeristy of Southern California. Recently I taught a class through the San Juan Island Library on "Films of the 1960's" where we viewed, learned and discussed great films from Hollywood made in the turbulent 1960's.

Other interests of mine include such things as the childfree issue. This really is yet another enviromental issue. Here are some links for those who wish to find out more about this subject.

I am also very interested in the architecture of Antoni Gaudi (see my email address). I have been to Barcelona Spain twice just to view his magnificent and bizarre buildings. Gaudi was a true genius of art nouveau.
Here is some of what was said about him in an online encyclopedia
"The Catalan architect Antonio (Antoni) Gaudi i Cornet, b. June 25, 1852, d. June 7, 1926, was one of the most eccentric and original geniuses in the development of modern art. His extremely personal style evolved without any perceptible contemporary influence, and he arrived independently at an equivalent of the international Art Nouveau style. Employing medieval Spanish traditions, Gaudi, like Sullivan, created a uniquely personal style. He combined typical Spanish materials such as wrought iron and colorful tile with cast concrete to create fantastic structures in an unusual Art Nouveau idiom. Gaudi's plans and structural models for the still uncompleted Church of the Sagrada Familia (Sacred Family), begun in 1883, show his power of invention as an engineer".

My next interest is my 3 dachshunds; Wotan, Gaudi and Shakti. To view personal pictures of my dachshunds click on this link to my first web page from 1997:
Wiener Wonderland Wotan is a smooth red 12 year old male and Gaudi and Shakti are long-hairs. Shakti is 11 and a red female who loves heights and pig ears. Gaudi is my adopted dappled dachsie from the Orcas islands whom I think is about 6 or 7 years old (I'm at least his third owner). Though a bit bizarre in appearance, he has a warm loving personality. Sadly, he recently went blind from something called SARDS. Wotan is our hunter. Mostly he hunts and kills plastic balls all day but he has also hunted and killed rats and mice. Well, now I should say this in the past tense as at age 12+ he has slowed down some and now rarely kills prey or even plays with his rubber balls. He still goes on a 2 or 3 mile walk each day though. With one doxie over 12 and another that is blind it now takes me twice as long to walk those miles, but still we are out there almost everyday of the year doing our 'nature thing'

Wiener dogs are clever, loving, fearless and funny.......even Gary Larson agrees!

Here is some info on a few "blasts from the past" I got re-interested in a few years back. When I started checking things out online when we got a modem in 1997 I found tons of info and that rekindled my liking for some of these 1960s people and shows:

Come see a dachshund page that goes back in time to when Wotan and Shakti were young puppies (the days before I had a computer...ancient in other words!) There are quite a few cute portraits and action photos of them as dachshund puppies. Also it tells of how we got the names Wotan and Shakti and what they mean and also talks about the defect Wotan was born with (which hasn't held him back in his life). Please stop by and see it at Dachshund Puppies: Wotan and Shakti

See a number of German dachshunds we met on our trip in 2001 as well as action photos of my own Wotan, Shakti & Gaudi. Come see Wotan with a yogurt container stuck on his head...that's a sight that will certain amaze and dazzle you:) Adventures with Dachshunds
