Some of the adventures of three dachshunds (and their people) in Oregon. Killer dachshund on the loose up ahead!Brand New for November 2002 Come see my newest web page online with a dozen new
photographs of my travels in Israel. There may not be any dachshunds visible, but I think you might find the photos and the text of my time in Jerusalem and in other places of interest. Check it out at Israel Travel Photographs
Innocent little dachshunds, huh? They look so cute and harmless. Here are our two oldest doxies: Wotan on the left and Shakti on the right. Wotan is a smooth red mini who loves to chase a ball all day, and Shakti is a longhaired female who loves heights and eating pig ears.
Here I am on an Oregon beach holding Wotan while Shakti and the youngest (our adopted dappled dachsie Gaudi) sniffs the sand. All seems at peace.
Oregon dune country.
Gaudi is our newest doxie. We saw a flyer asking for someone to adopt him last year when we were up in the San Juan islands. He is a dappled dachshund and about 3 years old. Although he is strange in appearance (his body is shaped like a football and reminds us of an opossum), he is very clever and loving. He is shown here gutting a stuffed toy. He only kills toys ... unlike our other two
dachshunds.
Shakti dachsie and my husband Joe on a clifftop at the southern Oregon coast in autumn. The beach you see below is really great. Nobody else was around the three times we have been there; the only way to get to it is a 2- mile, one-way hike from an obscure parking area. Untouched black sand, high waves, lots of seals in the water and big craggy rocks on the beach. It has a very wild feeling which I loved.
After a long hot hike over the Oregon dunes this summer, Joe tossed the 3 wiener dogs into the ocean to cool off. As soon as they got out of the cold water they rolled and rolled in the sand. Joe shows off the results of this with Gaudi.
And here is how Joe would look in the above picture if it were all "gooed".
Ms. Shakti is an odd dachshund. She loves heights and is always doing things like sitting on her cat window seat or walking on the piano keyboard. Often when outside she walks on the high retaining wall in our backyard.
In her next life she wants to be a tightrope walker.
Wotan is a doxie who lives to hunt. All evening long, every day, he is chasing his high-bouncing rubber balls for practice. As he sat listening for hours at the heating vent, his actions told us that we had an animal visitor in our crawlspace. (Warning...if you don't want to see a photo of a dead rat skip the next picture here... although there is no blood shown).
Wotan's natural dachshund hunting skills (and his hours of practice) paid off in yet another killing. After listening at the vent for weeks, he finally got outside fast enough to terminate this unlucky rat. Immediately he was off searching for new prey while Shakti watched as Joe put the newly deceased rodent in the garbage.
And now for something completely different..... Below are a couple of photographs of the dachshunds' people:
This photo of me was taken at Cape Ferrello, near Brookings on the Oregon coast. We sat there for hours and watched the sunset. A few years ago, we sat on the same spot in the *pouring* rain with heavy winds blowing just to watch the huge waves crash on the rocks below (wearing full rain gear)... that was very exciting! So this place is important to me and I have been there quite a few times. Behind me is the coast reaching into California (about 8 miles away). This page updated Nov. 2002.
