My husband Joe points to where the doxies have disappeared into a very large rabbit warren. One park here on the island has over 200,000 rabbits guidebooks say. We have seen a number of foxes in our hikes in this area and often we see bald eagles, golden eagles and hawks flying low overhead looking for a bunny to grab.
It's hard to get a decent photo of dachshund digging in this area because they keep running around and popping in and out of the many dozens of large holes and entrances to the rabbit warrens. This shot shows some action as Wotan on the left and Shakti on the right furiously dig and go underground. In the foreground Gaudi's head can be seen as he watches the action in puzzlement.
On this day Wotan went into a burrow too far and couldn't back out as easily as he got in. As a matter of fact he couldn't back out at all. This shot shows Joe checking on just where Wotan is down below and helping him maneuver out. Joe actually had to dig a bit to get him free. I think this photograph is very funny...it looks like a faked photo or a mannequin such as those people sometimes position in strange places for Halloween!
This action shot shows Wotan at the split second that he emerged from this hole he was trapped in. "Oh to be free again" he proclaims as he rushes off to jump into another rabbit hole immediately. You can't keep a dachshund down for long...or can you?
Wotan was injured climbing a big staircase Joe had him go up when we went over to Vancouver island B.C. near Christmas time to view the lights at Buchart Gardens. It took him a long time to get over this shoulder injury. X-rays at the vets showed nothing was broken and his back was not involved. The vet thought is was perhaps bursitis and for some weeks Wotan took Rimadyl. We still wanted to go out hiking and not leave Wotan home so for a month or so he joined us...carried in a baby sling around Joe's neck!
You've heard the expression "he's got a monkey on his back". Well Gaudi has a caterpillar on his. Considering how quickly Gaudi normally darts about it's amazing he was willing to stay still long enough for this shot to be taken.
Here's a real rarity, a photograph showing both of us and all three dachshunds together. This was taken outside one of the many vet office's Wotan has had to visit this past year. We are so glad he is finally feeling much better nowadays.
Wotan and Shakti are shown here posing like the musclebound athletes they are at American Camp National Historic Park here San Juan island where we live. This photographs gives you an idea of the terrain of the southern part of the island. As it is so windy at this part of the island much of the time, not many trees grow in this area. Instead there are very large meadows that are filled with wild lupines in the spring and several hundred thousand rabbits all year round. The doxies know heaven when they see it.
Orcas is a neighboring island we can get to on an inter-island ferry. This photo was taken on Orcas island when we were all hiking at Mt. Constitution which is in Moran State Park. Gaudi and Wotan are atop Little Summit looking out at Lummi island, Obstruction island, Blakely island and in the distance the mainland of Washington. All three of our dachshunds love to hike and are very good at it having no problems normally going 10 miles or under in a day. Most of our hikes are from 3-6 miles in length and we hike about 5 days a week.
Wotan has become so strong with all these 9 years of hiking and ball chasing he has had that he has taken on a part time job (so as to keep in a good supply of pig ears) which is delivery appliances. Here you can see him as he tests out a new stove he just delivered to a local family. Hey, that house looks familiar! Why...it's our house! So I guess you caught my little joke then. Wotan isn't a delivery boy, he's just getting ready to test out the first meal cooked on our new stove once we get it installed here. He figured is he stays on top of the stove then he is assured of getting the first bite of tasty meat filled dinner. "Yum" he proclaims.
Gaudi in a face-off against 3 viscous Canadian swans. We visited Vancouver B.C. in late January and encountered these hostile birds in Stanley Park. Just because they are twice the size of a doxie and outnumber him 3 to 1 they think they can pushed him around!
The numbers even out here at first then the swans call in a 4th as reinforcements. A stand off ensues.
I am beset by dachshunds. The doxies think we bought these new recliner chairs so that all three of them can sit on me at the same time.
Joe fell asleep in the other chair in a rather odd position...holding onto Gaudi's back feet!
When we were in Vancouver B.C. in late January we spotted a battery operated toy in a shop window. It is shaped like a weasel holding onto a ball and when you turn it on it rolls and hops all over the place. We knew it would drive the dachshunds wild with desire. Their hatred of all rodent like creatures is the driving force in Shakti and Wotan's lives. So when we got it out at home and turned it on we had to have one person hold the doxie's collars so they didn't rip the toy to a million shreds in less than a minute. They barked themselves hoarse and were panting with frustration 5 minutes later.
Here is a closer shot showing Wotan with the accursed weaselball toy. When a dachsie wants something they can be very strong and determined...and hard to hold back!
Wotan, Shakti and Gaudi look up in wonder on the beach here on the island and say "Now what is Ma doing up in that big old tree stump?". Dachshunds think humans are always doing silly things, and missing out on lots of good sniffing to boot.
I'll end this page with a funny Gary Larson card I found in a store recently. Dachshunds don't much care for people who ring doorbells and often react in aggressive ways, although I think Larson is exaggerating a tad with this one. Dachshunds actually rarely can bite a person who is standing up on the nose.
I'm finding that I've become overwhelmed by the amount of email I get from my dachshund web pages and am embarrassed at how long it takes me to reply as I rarely get on AOL to read email. So as of March 2003 I have removed my email link and instead have a guestbook link where you are welcome to come by and leave comments or questions or just read what other dachshund lovers have written.
