Here is a list of Massachusetts adoption agencies. MA ADOPTION AGENCIES

Be sure to call or write for your non-identifying info, and attach that BIRTHPARENT WAIVER if you are a birthmother and an

ADOPTEE WAIVER if you are an adoptee. For more info on waivers read on click on the blue links above.

If you cannot find your adoption agency on either of these lists, please contact Sheila Frankel at the phone number below. She will help you find the agency or it is possible that your record is held by the D.S.S. below.

Department of Social Services
24 Farnsworth St.
Boston, MA 02210
617-748-2240 (This is Sheila Frankel's direct line)

Please go to the agency where the adoption took place and request non-identifying information. Also attach a waiver of confidentiality. This waiver will allow the agency to release identifying information about you, to persons coming to the agency looking for you.

I now have sample waiver letters online:

BIRTHPARENT WAIVER

ADOPTEE WAIVER

Click these on, print them out, write your own letter and send them to the agency ASAP.

For a list of questions to ask when you go for non-identifying info QUESTIONS click here . Be sure to print out the questions and bring them to the agency with you.

Another thing you must consider doing is petitioning the probate court to unseal your records.

It is a relatively easy process. First determine the (probate) court of jurasdiction, call the courthouse to set up an appointment. (you can usually get in quickly) You will go before the judge. The best M.O. is to express a need for medical info and a desire to know your heritage. It is crucial that you present youself as a sane, well balanced person. If the judge unseals your record you will have your birthmothers name in your hands that day! Once you get it, contact me and I will help you from there. Just be sure to bring a notebook with you to the court, as they usually will not let you copy any records, just write down info. The court you need to petition is the county probate court from the county which your adoptive parents lived when you were adopted. You may want to write to the medical records department at the hospital where your were born for your birth records. Here are some site with Massachusetts Hospital phone numbers and addresses....

MASSACHUSETTS HOSPITALS
Massachusetts Hospitals & Health Org's
To obtain your birthrecords, you will probably need to know your birthname or your birthmothers name as medical records are usually filed by the mothers name. Also, the Hospital may tell you the records are destroyed after 30 years. Do not believe this, more often it is not true.

The records should be on microfilm. BEG for them.
Contacting the medical records department by mail is probably your best bet.
