SUCG
The Sub-Urban Chicago Grotto
of the
National Speleological Society
Hello!

The Sub-Urban Chicago Grotto is a local chapter of the National Speleological Society, a club of men and women, boys and girls bound together by thier love of caves and their desire to protect the underground wilderness.

The grotto is the vehicle by which those in a geographic area can find each other, find fellowship and--of course--go caving! The SUCG is the organization created to accommodate cavers and interested persons who live in the Chicago suburbs, but anyone living anywhere is always welcome!

Purpose

The reason we get together is to promote safe and responsible caving, to protect caves from accidental or intentional damage, and to keep up with the latest caving activities and scientific studies by sharing information and fellowship with other cavers; and, specifically, the purpose of the National Speleological Society:

"...to promote interest in and to advance in any and all ways the study and science of speleology, the protection of caves and their natural contents, and to promote fellowship among those interested therein."
(taken from the N.S.S. Constitution, as amended, June 1972)

What DO we do?

Well, we go caving as much as possible, whenever possible. But in the meantime, we hold meetings every other month at a pizza restaurant in Aurora, IL. Anyone even remotely interested is invited! It's there that we hear about places where members have gone a-caving, talk about issues important to the caving community, view

interesting "programs" (like equipment demonstrations or a slide show), plan training sessions and, of course, discuss future cave trips!

What else?

The SUCG interacts with area scouting organizations, offering talks and presentations about cave exploration and conservation. We hold informal training sessions at various locations and gather for occasional social events. We help cavers meet other cavers in the area to plan cave trips, and we have a strong working relationship with Illinois Caverns, a state-owned wild cave near St. Louis.
