Purple was a costly dye extracted from the marine turnculus, a Marine mollusk, from which the pheoniciams were able to manufacture the dye. A crushed gland gave out a milk like fluid that turned Purple or scarlet upon contract with the air. Because of its Extreme costiness, it became a mark of distinction to wear a robe of officials, arrayed themselves in purple robes. In early times, Royalty was so dressed.
