About the Basic Allotment Library and Finale
Default File
These files, designed to complement TempiFont
and ThesisFont, incorporate an advanced spacing
algorithm which has been derived, tested, and refined over the period of
several years. First, spacings were empirically determined from fine music
engraving. Second, these values were plotted and reduced to a general parametric
equation on the Mac. This equation was then used to derive allotment values
for 63 different EDU durations -- the most finale will allow. These values
were then entered into a default file, where they were used in practice
and further refined and tested. The result is a set of allotments which
spaces tuplet cross-rhythms (2 vs. 3, 3 vs. 5, etc.) cleanly and evenly,
without unnecessary waste of space. The nature of the derivation of these
allotments makes it possible to easily derive new allotment values for EDU
durations not covered in the basic allotment set, if and when the need should
arise.
The Basic Allotment Library may be loaded into any finale file not created
by the Finale Default File (included with the basic allotment library).
Besides incorporating the aforementioned allotments, the default file also
makes use of and reference to TempiFont and ThesisFont in its tables of Staff and NoteExpressions.
The Finale Default File also includes modified settings for font use
and tie arcs, among other settings. These settings may be exported to files
created prior to the installation of the default file by making a library
of "Global Settings" from the [Save Library...] command from the
[File] menu.
