About Olive View - UCLA Medical Center
Located at 14445 Olive View Drive, Room 1C112, Sylmar, California, 91342, 25 miles north of Los Angeles, Olive View - UCLA Medical Center is one of five Los Angeles County Public Hospitals. The hospital has served the San Fernando Valley since 1920 when Olive View was established as a tuberculosis sanitarium. A modern acute care hospital was constructed on the 535 acre site in 1970. Olive View - UCLA Medical Center provides a variety of training programs to medical and nursing staff, dietetic and pharmacy students and other health care providers. Because Olive View - UCLA is a teaching facility, affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the interns work closely with physicians and other health care providers and participate in patient care rounds to ensure continuity of patient care.

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center's Dietetic Internship Program has a general emphasis curriculum, and is 42 weeks in length, full time, from mid-September to early July. We provide over 900 hours of supervised clinical/administrative practice in the field of dietetics. We currently enroll 2 interns a year.
Our Mission: Provide a diverse training program of exceptional quality for dietetic interns that yield competent entry-level dietitians.
Our Goals and Outcome Measures:
1. Provide an accredited post baccalaureate educational program through which students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary for successful completion of the registration examination. a. 95% of graduates will take the RD exam within one year of graduation. b. Over a period of 5 years, at least 80% of graduates will pass the RD Exam within one year of graduation. c. In the final graduate evaluation given each year, 80% of interns will answer, “yes” to the question “Do you feel the internship prepared you to take the registration examination?”
2. Provide a program where interns develop competence in practicing effectively and independently as entry-level dietitians. a. Over a period of 5 years, at least 80% of graduates will be working as entry-level dietitians. b. In the one-year post graduate evaluation given each year, 80% of interns will answer “yes” to the question “Do you feel the internship prepared you for your role as an entry-level dietetic professional?” c. Over a period of 3 years, the average overall rating in each section of the One-Year Postgraduate Surveys and Employer Surveys will be 3 (entry-level skilled) or higher. d. Over a period of 3 years, at least 75% of 1st year graduates’ employers will answer, “yes” to the question “Do you feel this graduate has been well prepared for this position?”
3. Provide a program that enables graduates to become actively involved in professional organizations and contribute their skills and knowledge learned in the internship for the good of the public. a. Over a period of 3 years, at least 80% of graduates will be involved in professional organizations. b. In the one-year post graduate evaluation, 80% of interns will answer “yes” to the question “are you contributing to the public using your professional dietetic skills learned in the internship?” c. In the one-year post graduate evaluations, 80% of employers will answer “yes” to the question “Do you feel this graduate was prepared to help the public using their professional dietetic skills upon hiring?”
During the course of the internship, interns have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings with all age groups and gain experience in the following areas: acute clinical care, ambulatory care, food service administration, and community nutrition programs The program includes a variety of field trips and consortium classes with other internships in the area to provide didactic learning experiences on food service management and clinical and community nutrition topics to augment the practical learning experiences. Most of the training occurs at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar; however, additional training is provided at affiliate sites including UCLA, Cedars-Sinai, Sherman Oaks Burn Center, WIC, and AIDS Project LA. The Food and Nutrition Department as well as the Dietetic Internship Program at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center are managed by Morrison Management Specialists, a contract food service company. Thus, our interns also get experience in the workings of contract food service management. The Food & Nutrition Services Department provides services for the entire medical center, including cafe and catering programs and Meals On Wheels service for the community. The department is professionally staffed with 6 dietitians and 5 managers.
There is no tuition cost for our program and parking and one meal is provided while at OVMC.
Upon successful completion of the program, interns are eligible to apply to take the Registration Examination.
Graduation Requirements:
1. Attains competency at entry-level in all rotations. “Competency” is defined as a score of 3 or higher on the rotation evaluations.
2. Returns or compensates to Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, Morrison Management Specialists and affiliate sites, any unreturned properties or unpaid bills prior to program completion. This includes library materials, audio-visual equipment, validine meal cards and uniform apparel.
3. Interns must complete the following: a. Name/Address Verification Form b. Program evaluation form c. Student exit packet
Cost Estimates and Financial Assistance: Housing (dependent on location) Studio- Two bedroom- $450-$1500 per month Utilities/Gas/Electric/Phone/Water- $75- $190 per month Transportation (car mandatory)- $175-$259 per month Health Insurance (optional but highly rec.)- $75-$150 per month Books / Supplies- $100-$200 per year Professional Liability Insurance(req)- $35 per year American Dietetic Ass. Membership- $49 per year Los Angeles Dietetic Association Membership- $10 per year (not req) Food / Clothing / Miscellaneous- varies
Provided: Parking at OVMC $4.50/day for meals Most paper supplies/copying needs provided while at OVMC
Financial Assistance: The American Dietetic Association Foundation makes a number of scholarships available each year. Applicants to the internship program are encouraged to apply for those in the “graduate” or “Internship” categories.

General Information Admission
The following criteria will be used in selecting interns: -Academic standing. -Work experience in the field of dietetics. -Communication skills as demonstrated in the personal interview and the letter of application. -Career orientation, professional interest, and motivation.

Application Procedure: Completed application packets consist of: - Standard ADA Internship Application Form-see ADA website - Official Education Transcrips - Verification Statement of Completion of Dietetic Program -or- - Declaration of Intent of Complete Dietetic Program - Letter of Application (typed) - Two sealed letters of recommendation using the standard ADA recommendation forms - Application Fee of $75.00 payable to Morrison Mail the completed application to the Dietetic Internship Director by February 15th.
