The River Rat
Odyssey of a Fallen Warrior

North Vietnam 1967, a terrible place to be. We were all young then. We grew old quickly. Many of us didn't return. I was lucky, but my best friend Ed wasn't. He and I are pictured below in better times.

Me and Ed Cappelli. Ed didn't survive. He was shot down by a missile as he led the force into Hanoi. He was a great pilot and patriot, a gentle and kind soul. I salute him and all the others on "The Wall."

The book is not all about combat. It deals with the pain and frustration of recovering from injuries. It shows the contrast of the peacetime Air Force to the combat urgency of a trained and involved unit. The story takes us to retirement and escape from a political and inefective service that has known better days. The combat pilot is proud but releived to be gone from this petty service that once flew the skies of North Vietnam with bold and fearless force.
