The Squirrels

Safe Surf

Rocky came to us one day in the summer. I was visiting my mother and dad and was sitting in their back room eating potato chips when I saw a squirrel in the yard searching for food. I don't know what possessed me to open the window and call him and throw a potato chip to him. He came running. He couldn't eat it and he looked starved. I could see his mouth looked somewhat deformed. Later we decided he must have been hit by a car and lived or was grabbed by a dog. Mom made him a peanut butter sandwich and he took it and ran. He started coming back every day at least once, sometimes twice. Mom saved him pieces of muffins and donuts and always had a peanut butter sandwich ready so he would have some protein.

When the weather started to get colder he was still coming but I could tell he wasn't feeling very well. I tried calling several numbers to see if I could find someone who would rescue him but wasn't having much luck. A park ranger told me to try to coax him in the garage and then they would see what they could do, but alas we never saw him again. He was staggering slightly that day and it pained me so badly to see him like that. We never knew where his nest was but he must have gone back to it and just gone to sleep. I hope he's waiting for us at Rainbow Bridge. He was so friendly and thankful for our help. Below is a picture of Rocky and I. He would just take the sandwich and start to eat. Poor little guy.

It is so sad to see so many squirrels dead in the street or injured. About two years back I rescued a squirrel who had been hit by a car and took him to our shelter clinic where they gave him herbs and made him comfortable and then he was transported to a wildlife rescue facility and they saved his life. Last night I came upon another squirrel in the park - either hit by a car or grabbed by a dog - I also took him to our shelter clinic but I knew while I was driving there that the news wasn't going to be good - so we ended his suffering and sent him to Rainbow Bridge. I'm so sorry I couldn't help you more, little guy. I know you at least didn't have to suffer all night alone.
Baby squirrels The babies came down the tree in front of my parents house during the worst storm. Found out later their Mom had been killed by a car going down the street. We found a facility that said they had raised many squirrels and they would take care of them and then release them when they were old enough. There were four of them. My dad is holding the other one below.
This baby was the first one to come down. Unfortunately we didn't know what to do and although we tried to feed them as they came down one by one over a period of days, the first little guy died. I had never done anything like this before. After hand feeding kittens at the shelter, I know that if it had happened now, I could have probably saved them. This little guy went to be with him Mom at Rainbow Bridge. Dad and baby squirrel

After Rocky, we started feeding other squirrels. They became very friendly. I know they can cause a lot of damage if they get into your house, or car and chew telephone wires, etc. But they are so cute. And I have had guinea pigs and they remind me so much of those little critters.

We started naming them and you could usually tell which one was which. A couple would even come when you called them. They knew they were about to get "good stuff". Mom even made them peanut butter sandwiches and gave them muffins. Here are a few pictures of them. We weren't sure if they were related but they often came together. We didn't even know if they were male or female - we just started calling them Samantha and Tabitha.

Tabitha This is Tabitha. She had this crazy habit of flopping down in the yard to rest when it was hot. It seemed to cool her off.
This is Samantha. She would come to the front steps and sit on the railing and look in the window. If she didn't get a response, she would go around to the back. We had a male cardinal who did the same thing too. Samantha

Lazy Tabitha Here is Tabitha. I guess she was pretty lazy. Who ever heard of lying down to eat?
You guessed it, this is Tabitha "chilling out" by my car. I asked her if she wanted a ride, but she declined. Tabitha by car

More Samantha One more of Samantha. She would really let you get close. In fact she sat on my foot once while she waited for me to get nuts out of the bag. She once also helped us open the door when we were coming out. We got a little nervous she would invite herself in, so we stopped calling her until we were already outside.
