First Anniversary
Afghan President Hamid Karzai paid his respects.
On the first anniversary of Massoud's assassination, thousands of people came to pay tribute to their fallen hero. A new monument to The Lion of Panjshir had been built over his grave. People mourned, wept, and prayed for Afghanistan's truest son.
A memorial service for Massoud was also held in Kabul. Thousands more attended this event. Women who had been so brutalized by the Taliban and for whom Massoud had great concern, streamed to the stadium to share their grief and commemorate the man who died in an effort to help secure their freedom.
Massoud's thirteen year old son, Ahmed, addressed the crowd who gathered to honor his father. Young Ahmed said, "The enemies thought that by killing my father, the hero Ahmed Shah Massoud, they could kill his dreams. They didn't know that Massoud was more than just a mortal. He was an idea, a vision."
In a speech President Hamid Karzai praised Massoud and his valiant fight to free Afghanistan, first from the Soviet Union, and then from the Taliban and the al-Qaeda terrorists.

The anniversary of Massoud's death will always be a day of sorrow in Afghanistan. In death as in life, Massoud inspires his people to fight for freedom even as they seek peace, to battle injustice even as they follow goodness and mercy, to struggle against poverty and oppression even as they celebrate the blessings and joy of life.
The building in which Massoud was killed has been restored and is back in use. On the anniversary of his death, his men gathered there to talk about the beloved leader they call Amer Saheb.
