Massoud's picture hangs at Bagram Airbase as well the ones in Kabul and  Kandahar.
Al- Qaeda and the Taliban thought that removing the physical presence of Ahmed Shah Massoud from this earth would be the end of his influence. They could not have been more wrong. In death Massoud has become even larger and more legendary than he was in life, and that would have seemed impossible to his enemies.
Many women fled the repressive brutality of the Taliban and went north into the area of Afghanistan controlled by Massoud. There they were able to receive an education and have a job.  

There is a story of a woman nurse the Taliban refused to allow to practice medicine. She and her family were starving. When Massoud heard of her plight, he had her rescued and brought to Panjshir where she was given a job at a local clinic.
For Massoud's Northern Alliance, the victory over the Taliban and al-Qaeda is bittersweet.  The man who lead them through years of seemingly impossible campaigns was not there to lead them into their sweetest victories.
Throughout the devastated landscape of Afghanistan, the picture of Massoud hangs like a beacon of hope for the future.
