The Hyperbolic Observer

I don't know anything about anything -- never have, don't, never will. Either that, or, that which I do know is so insignificant, "nion," that it may as well be considered nothing. At best, what I have are inklings, as well as the shadows of inklings.

I have come to regard myself as being sufficiently an ignoramus, concerning the ultimate nature of reality, that I must recuse myself from attempting to offer the final word on any subject whatever. Anything that I might say about "reality" must inevitably be colored and distorted by my own life experience and predilection. Ignore me; what do you think?

It has been said that the wise man is aware of the extent of his ignorance -- yet this should not be taken as an absolution for one's points of actual ignorance.

Thus everything contained herein is of course my best guess as to the nature of reality. If the points which I bring to your attention prove useful, use them; if not, ignore them. I have decided to offer-up my inklings for your perusal and amusement, while at the same time sparing you the affrontery of my shadows of inklings.

Anything that I write is to be regarded as so much verbiage -- though such an appraisal may be levied against virtually anyone. There is enough verbiage in this world already; I am loath to add to the malignant heap. I shall now endeavor to be as laconic as possible.

What would one write for posterity, at the end of the world?

Please note that this website has been undergoing a period of comprehensive revision, in the effort to narrow its focus to the study of the Hyperbolic Philosophy. All material extraneous to this effort has been excized, and discarded. In this space, a site dedicated to the most severe intellectual self-criticism is being erected. It cannot attempt to cater to the general interest.

Mission Statement of the Revised Site, Dedicated to The Hyperbolic Philosophy

The Hyperbolic Philosophy, and the site dedicated to it, shall be characterized by:

(1) falsifiable premises & statements, including:

(1a) prescriptions expressed in the form of falsifiable statements,

(1b) self-criticism, and an aversion to vain pronouncements,

(2) broad and identified, as opposed to tight and mendaciously-defined, circularities in reasoning (when such are inevitable),

(3) a human scale of reference,

(4) a system as independent as possible from the personality of this writer,

(4a) a system which makes no unwonted or unjustified reference back to this writer's personal demographic(s), or other objective traits, and

(5) an aversion to ad hominem argument.

New links are now being added. Please refer back to this space at some time in the near future.
