Up the road just east of Lake Conroe, Texas on FM 1097 is a peaceful place called 
Spirit Acres Farm Equine Rescue and Sanctuary.

Driving up to the gate you can feel the love for the horses that surrounds
this 30 acre farm.

Spirit Acres is home to 60 horses who, with the efforts of Kat Matrician
owner of Spirit Acres and caregiver of her four legged friends, were rescued
from homes where they were neglected and/or abused. Some of the owners
were going to put their horses down but Kat said "NO!"

Of the 60 horses Kat has on the farm 15 are adoptable, and 10 to 15 more are
adoptable as pets, but not ride able due to health reasons.

Kats burden each week is coming up enough funds for food and medical care for
the Horses. It's a burden she gladly accepts. The weekly food supplies include
7 round bales of hay (approx. 1200 lbs), 20 square bales of hay, 21 square bales
of Alfalfa, and 3000 pounds of feed.

Let me introduce you to some of the horses

Spirit
Spirit, who the farm is named after, was found when she was only one day old with
her umbilical cord still attached. The people who found her thought she was an
abandoned fawn. An extensive search was started to find the mare, but no one
claimed any knowledge of her. Fund4Horses contacted Kat and when Spirit was
four days old she came to live with Kat. For the next six weeks Spirit lived in one
of the bedrooms in the house and was fed a special blend of milk developed for
her special needs. Now two years old, Spirit still visits the house once in a while
walking around sniffing things until she decides it's time to go back outside.

As you can see it was love at first sight for Spirit and me.

Star and Beautiful

There is something about the sight of a fallen horse that strikes one's heart in such a way, even
for those who are not particularly a horse lover...the significance of something so sacred, powerful,
beautiful, intoxicating as the horse...when a fallen horse is seen overcome by life's obstacles, fallen
tears and a jolt to the heart and soul can never be prevented...

Domino and Kat.
Kat has debilitating problem with her right knee but doesn't allow her
problem get in the way of taking care of her babies.

When I can't ride any more, I shall still keep horses as long as I can hobble about with a
bucket and wheelbarrow. When I can't hobble, I shall roll my wheelchair out to the fence
of the field where my horse's graze, and watch them.

Sassy is being led to the arena by Dave, one of the many volunteers that arrive at
Spirit Acres every day to help out with the care and feeding of the horses.
