Potbelly Cycling Association

Potbelly Cycling Association ...this page last modified at 1 AM, July 26, 2004

45 Munson Road
Pleasantville, NY 10570 USA

- The organization takes a lighthearted and accepting approach to cycling with a potbelly. (and having one) It wishes to encourage folks with potbellies to get on bikes and roll. It's fun!

- We hope all our newsletters are both fun and informative.

- There is a separate category of membership for people who fail to develop or maintain a potbelly, called "Athletic Supporter" membership.

"Lost members" We've had a few newsletters returned by the Postal Service, saying the address had expired...if YOU haven't gotten your newsletter, please Email the editor! (Click on the info link below.) AND if your email address has changed, please email the editor with both your new AND old address, so that the old one can be deleted.

A wider membership: We now have members from Saudi Arabia west to Okinawa.

Links are below.

We had a special guest column by custom framebuilder Rick Gnehm. (Banana Boy Bicycles) Rick told us all about different types of frames--advantages and disadvantages too. One of Rick's custom frames (and handlebars) was ridden to a UCI world championship in England. (They are the folks who put on the Tour de France.) While most of our riders are not likely to win cycling races (or even be in one), it's nice to have some teaching from a pro.

Started in December 1995, word started getting around...there's been a lot of enthusiasm expressed by those responding.

T-shirts: (None smaller than XL)...sorry, sold out! If you have one, it's now a collector's item.

Several members have ridden in the STP (Seattle to Portland) ride. One wore his original t-shirt proudly as he crossed the finish line.

There was a nice writeup in the August 1996 issue of Mountain Biker Magazine, written byPatrick O'Grady, the famous bicycling cartoonist. (He also included one of his neat 'toons, slightly modified here, with his permission, and Mountain Biker Magazine's. Thanks, guys.) The editor FINALLY met Patrick face to face in 2003 at Interbike! It was great fun.

Our cartoonist's website: http://www.maddogmedia.com/ Note: His book of bike 'toons is out. Buy his book to help support his art.

Bicycling Magazine's October 1997 issue gave us a mention too. Although short, a lot of potbellied folks are coming to check out the web page...and request applications.
Although we have a WIDE membership range (see above), to date most members are scattered throughout the United States and Canada, from the East coast to Hawaii. We've also had inquiries from Australia, South Africa and Malaysia, and we've been told that someone read about us in a Czech bicycling magazine. The editor met with our first UK member in England, and we went on a GREAT ride there thru Nottingham and Sherwood forest. We even saw today's Sheriff of Nottingham! (Of Robin Hood fame) The current Sheriff of Nottingham drives a Bently™, so perhaps things haven't changed all that much? ;-)

Happy Cycling!

Several of us were among approximately 1,500 cyclists who biked back and forth across a 3 mile bridge in NY, the first time it ever was open to bike traffic. The whole ride was about 20 hilly miles:
Bike across the Tappan Zee Coordination of the ride has switched to the MS Society. The 2003 ride is scheduled for October 5th, and the route includes both the Tappan Zee and Bear Mountain Bridges.

Several of us have done "Bike NY", going thru the 5 boroughs. It's quite an event! 42 miles around NYC, with bikes as far as you could see in both directions, and WAY beyond. It's crowded! Approximately 40,000 bicyclists turn out. (That's right, 40,000!) That's more than do the NYC marathon!

www.bikenewyork.org It almost makes Amsterdam look like a place that doesn't have many cycles!

Bicycling links: (non-bike links at bottom of page) Note: A number of these are down at the moment. Some have probably changed, and some might be down to to some of the Microsoft Windows(tm) security holes that allow worms(tm) ;-) to bring down a number of websites around the world. I will check again and update soon. If you know of any that have definitely changed or been removed, pleae email those changes. (Info/App link above)

http://www.letour.com/ Le Tour de France (Congrats to LANCE ARMSTRONG on his 6th consecutive Tour de France victory!) Having been written off as a serious rider, due to cancer, he delighted many with his story of what the human spirit can do. He established a foundation to help with cancer research, http://www.laf.org/ classy guy that he is. Ride on, Lance!

I've gone to "Bike Week" in Toronto the last few years. They have invited us all to attend their yearly celebration. It's free. If you haven't biked there, I heartily recommend it. Although they have lots of folks who ride year round, I don't like cold weather biking. However, it's a great place to bike. Consider going there for their annual bike week. It's a blast. http://www.city.toronto.on.ca/cycling/bikeweek/index.htm The co-op in Toronto is a great place to get bike stuff too. I got my favorite bike jacket there. And given the difficulty Toronto had with tourism in 2003 due to SARS, I know they appreciate the visitors even more! I rode on the waterfront trail with some of the cycling ambassadors this year, and it was lots of fun!

How about something from Australia? (If these guys used more Potbelly Cyclists, they'd need less cyclists!) http://www.nccnsw.org.au/~cmass/index.shtml

The editor had a blast at INTERBIKE 97 & 98 in Philly and INTERBIKE 2000, 2001, and 2002 in Las Vegas. Rather than duplicate pictures already on the web, look up Interbike on the web, and see the pictures. (In1997 I started the ride early Sunday morning after the main group left, I pedaled like heck to catch up...only to find out there was a VERY long, wicked hill ahead! But I had fun passing some of those anorexic looking folks while going up that hill anyway. And did I smoke 'em on the downhill! The '98 one was also a lot of fun, but didn't have a group ride. The Nevada show is BIG. There we have gone on rides in Blue Diamond, Nevada. It's lots of fun, although a bit warm in the summer!

One of our members asked us to publicize a request for donations: Donations to Dan's charity (Note: this was a few years back, but I'm sure the charity will still accept checks.)
