Medications This area is not about telling you how to treat your rats without the benefit of a veterinarian. It's unethical for me to do that. I don't practice medicine without a license. If your pets need medical care do see a veterinarian in your area.
Drug Treatments: A Word of Caution Some hobbyists are out there practicing veterinary medicine without a license. This can lead to cruelty to animals when medically uneducated people are experimenting on animals. Many tout human or other drugs as a great treatment for rats even though these people have no education in pharmacology. Drugs are not candy they are deadly serious chemicals. Without a diagnosis made by a qualified veterinarian, is it such a good idea to try any thing on your beloved pets because a person with no formal medical training says, "I recommend that you use this"? Is the fact that someone tried something and their own rat didn't drop dead yet, a good enough reason to use a drug with no science to back up the treatment? It's up to you to decide that for your own rats. I personally don't care to use my pets as test animals, I hope you don't either. Think about this before you buy something over the counter that you don't know much about. If you want to try something on your own, then please do so only after consulting your veterinarian. Please keep in mind the first rule of pharmacology: All drugs are potential poisons. Pyrethroids: Not as safe as you think... Over The Counter Pet store so-called "medications." Though written for parrots this article authored by a DVM covers reasons why you shouldn't use these for any pet.
