A Dino-Mite Party Plan!

  • Creating The Party Mood - A few plants, a dinosaur sound track, some dinosaur footprints, along with a few dinosaur pictures or toys strategically placed, work wonderfully for creating a dinosaur party atmosphere. Your guests can even be invited to wear their favorite dinosaur T-Shirt to the party. This type of party works well both indoors or outdoors (weather permitting of course).
  • Part 1 - "The Entrance- To give your guests something to do as they wait for all of the guests to arrive, have a table set up with some drawing paper, dinosaur coloring book pages, and some markers and crayons, and have your guests draw and/or color their favorite dinosaur.  Make sure that the children put their names on their pictures so that later these pictures can be used for drawing a door prize if desired. The labeled pictures can later be given back to the children to take home with them.
  • Part 2 - "The Game Plan" - Before the games begin, give each child an empty party bag with their name on it for collecting prizes.  Below are a few dinosaur game suggestions:
  • You could start by playing "Tyro Lost A Tooth"R which is a "stick the tooth on the dinosaur game" and is one of my own original party creations. This game can be viewed by scrolling down to the bottom of this page.
  • Next you could have a dinosaur egg hunt.  Color some plastic easter eggs with speckles and fill them with miniature plastic dinosaurs or other small prizes. Have enough eggs hidden so that your guests can each find at least 2 or 3. You may also wish to place a limit on the number of eggs each guest can find so that there are enough to go around.
  • A dinosaur piniata can also be fun, but safety rules will need to be clearly stated. If you place a blanket or sheet under the piniata, rather than letting the children dive for the contents once the piniata has been broken, you could wrap the contents inside the blanket and carry it to a table where the children can divide the bounty and place the items into their party bags.
  • Part 3 - "The Dino Diner Is Open" - With a little imagination you can magically transform children's favorite food items into fabulous prehistoric delicacies.  You could serve entrees such as "Bronto Burgers" (hamburgers) or "Fried Pterodactyl" (fried chicken), and you could label each entree with folded pieces of cardstock placed in front of the serving dishes. Of course you'll want to have a dinosaur cake afterwards, and for a special touch to the ice cream, you could either top it with gummy dinosaurs or small dinosaur shaped cookies. If you happen to have a large dinosaur cookie cutter, you could even cut out dinosaur shapes from ice cream squares and top them with colored sugar sprinkles. After the kids are done eating is a perfect time to draw for a door prize. Have the guest of honor look away and select one the pictures that the children colored when they first arrived. The pictures can then be handed out to your party guests so that they can place them into their party bags to take home with them.
  • Part 4 - "It's Time To Open The Presents!" - Well, you could choose to open the presents the traditional way, but why not make a game out of it?  Everyone's a winner in this game, it's called "The Dino Walk".  Place several dinosaur footprints around in a large circle and number each one. (Yes, it's sort of like a cake walk)  Place corresponding numbers into a hat or bowl.  Have the guest of honor sit in the center of the circle with all of the gifts, a basket containing small game prizes such as bags of dinosaur eggs (speckled jelly beans) or other small gift items, along with the hat holding the game numbers. Turn on some music or favorite dinosaur sound track and have the children lumber around the footprints like dinosaurs until the music stops. Then have the guest of honor choose a number from the hat or bowl and have the child standing on that number enter the center of the circle to have their gift opened. The guest of honor then awards the winner with a game prize. Once the children's presents have been opened and they have received their prize, they sit outside of the circle so they can cheer the rest of the guests on until all of the presents have been opened.
