WHAT IS A COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL CARE HOME?
A community residential care home is one designed to care for those who do not wish or are unable to live alone but who do need:
* A home-like atmosphere in which to reside;
* To do as much as they can by themselves, even though they may be slow or handicapped;
* To be "cared for" when they are unable to manage with help;
* To have something to do that has interest and meaning to them;
* To make something or do something for someone else, not just sit and be entertained;
* To keep in touch with relatives and friends, with life outside church, lodge, and clubs;
* To find new interests, especially if loved ones are lost;
* To be part of a family atmosphere;
* 24-hour care and supervision;
* Transportation arranged to medical and dental appointments;
* Three nutritious meals daily and snacks;
* Special diet, when necessary;
* Assistance with dressing, bathing, shaving, personal hygiene, and grooming;
* Care of clothing, including laundry, mending and ironing;
* Assistance with personal shopping;
* Social, religious and recreational activities available.
WHO LIVES IN COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL CARE HOMES?
Community residential care homes provide a home-like environment for the care of elderly, developmentally disabled, chronically ill, group homes, foster care and mentally ill persons. This personalized care allows for a maximum of independence for the residents while assuring that they receive all the services and care they need. Resident populations in each of the CRCAC homes ranges from one to more than 200.
There are more than one million persons in some 90,000 licensed care homes in California. All of these licensed homes are inspected annually by the California Department of Social Services-Community Care Licensing Division.
Elderly: There are more than 155,000 residents in over 6,481 facilities.
Developmentally Disabled: There are about 25,000 persons in some 2,500 homes.
Mental Health: There are approximately 28,000 mental health residents in some 2,000 homes.
Chronically Ill: Approximately 30 facilities serve 400 chronically ill residents.
Foster Care Group Homes: There are about 1,800 foster care group homes in California serving approximately 16,000 residents.
THE INDUSTRY IS GROWING!
As our population grows older and is more in need, the demand for assisted living/residential care will increase. Social and economic conditions also create a need for more care.
* It is estimated there are one-half million homeless in California. Many of these people could utilize a community residential care setting.
* There are now 37 million Americans over 65 nationally.
* In 20 years, there will be 68 million Americans over 65 nationally.
* In California we have more than 4 million people over 65.
* In 20 years these people will be over 85. This population will be in need of custodial (residential care) assisted living. Example, today in California there are one-half million persons over 85 years old. In 20 years there will be 1.1 million Californians who are over 85.
* According to former Congressman Roybal's report, approximately 30% of elderly residents in nursing homes could be transferred to a less restrictive setting such as a residential care home for the elderly/assisted living facility.
