A Soldier's Night Before Christmas

Click Above Link To Visit

Click the above link to read this wonderful poem from the Joy.net honoring those who so unselfishly give of themselves year round to serve our country to preserve our freedom.

Silent Night

Silent Night, in addition to being the most popular Christmas carol around the world, is also THE song that stopped a war. On Christmas Eve during World War I, German soldiers in the trenches held up Christmas trees lit with candles and a few of the soldiers began singing Silent Night, "Stille nacht, heilige nacht". Soon others along the German line joined in and then the British soldiers recognizing the melody joined them in the singing of this beautiful song. Soldiers from both sides left the trenches and met in the middle and some of them even exchanged gifts. An undeclared truce began and there was no more fighting for the remainder of the night. There was "Peace on Earth" for that one night in history.

Did You know....

The poinsettia is a plant that is native to Mexico. They got their name from Mexico's first American ambassador, Joel Poinsett. He brought the plants back to America in 1828.

Mexicans in the 18th century thought the beautiful red, star shaped leaves were symbolic of the Star of Bethlehem. This helped the poinsettia to become a favorite traditional plant at Christmas.

.A Fun Way For Groups

To Open Gifts!

Written By S.L. Amon

A fun and easy way to open gifts by turn, is to open them lottery style as you read "Twas The Night Before Christmas".  Directions are as follows:

Choose key words from the story, such as Christmas, mouse, mamma, nap, stockings, St. Nicholas, etc.  Select as many different words as the number of presents there are to open. Write each of these words on folded slips of paper and put them into a Santa hat.

To begin, distribute all of the presents to the proper recipients instructing them not to open their gifts.  Allow each person to draw enough words from the Santa hat to equal the number of presents in front of them; having them put one word on top of each present. Your guests will then listen as the story is being read, and when they hear the word that is written on one of their slips of paper, have them call out "Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas!". Stop the story long enough for the person to open the gift that has the matching word on top of it, then continue the story, repeating this procedure until all of the gifts have been opened. Be sure to read all the way to the end of the story because you wouldn't want to miss the ending!

Note:  Either "Key Words" or "Key Phrases" can be used for this game. If "Key Words" are chosen, it works best if you finish the line you are reading so that the story is not interrupted too much.  It is also helpful if you type the story onto a sheet of paper underscoring the words or phrases where you wish to stop for gift opening.  By typing it in advance you can determine the logical breaking points which would be least disruptive to the story being told.  You may also want to ask your guests in advance to avoid handling their discarded wrapping paper whenever the story is being read.
