Bass Players Without Borders

Bassist Michael Peter Balzary (aka "Flea" of The Red Hot Chili Peppers) and I comparing 'notes' at  Lollopalooza 2006 held in Grant Park. It should come as no surprise that Flea studied out of Rufus Reid's "Evolving Bassist". He also indicated he has recently been listening to Wagner's "Lohengrin".
Two of the finest bass blogs on the internet are here:

A 2005 ASTA (American String Teachers' Association) Special Projects Award brought Czech double bass virtuoso, composer, and leading educator to Chicago for a week-long residency celebrating the 100yr anniversary of the first known documented exclusively double bass recital given in America--given by Vaclav Jiskra, October 4, 1905 in Chicago.
A 1996 Chicago Artists International Program Award sent me to the Czech Republic to collaborate with Miloslav Gajdoš. Much to my surprise, we ended up at the Michealstein Kloster for Klaus Trumpf's annual Kontrabass seminar. Pictured on the left, Greg Sarchet, Miloslav Gajdoš, Jirí Valícek.  Professor Gajdoš, in turn, visited Chicago, (March/April 1996), for more collaborative performances and masterclasses. Among the many activities during that visit, we attended Richard Davis' Young Bassists Conference as guest clinicians, held masterclasses at Northern Illinois University and Columbia College and for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, and presented a collaborative recital at the beatiful Harold Washington Library Auditorium, (taped and broadcast on local television). Gajdoš returned in August 1997, along with three of his pupils, Miloslav Raisigl, Ludek Zakopal, and Jirí Valícek.

Read the Preface that I wrote for his collection of compositions entitled
Mike Morgan visiting Chicago in Jan 06. He took time out to coach Chris Kreiling (-- left--Chris completed his MM with Don Palma in Boston and is now in the Chicago Civic Orchestra)
Click on Fred Zimmermann, ( A Contemporary Concept of Bowing Technique, arguably the greatest American contribution to 20th C. bass pedagogy) to view the (large) index to his archives, held at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
Students enjoy foraging through the library of materials that I have been fortunate enough to accrue over the years, for example, Die Hohe Schule, which is essentially "Volume Three" of the often maligned and misunderstood Simandl Method.
