A Bit of History
In 1835, Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna
took all government power into his hands. This pushed Texans further toward independence.
In
San Antonio, a small army of Texans led by William B. Travis
was occupying an abandoned Spanish mission known as the Alamo. Mexican forces
surrounded the Alamo for 12 days. Then, early in the morning of March 6, 1836,
the Mexican army charged the Alamo. Both the Texans and the Mexicans fought bravely
for more than an hour and a half. In the end, almost all of the 187 men
inside the Alamo were killed. Included among the dead were famous frontiersmen
Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Losses on the Mexican side were also high.
Defeat
at the Alamo united the Texans in their fight for independence. With
cries of "Remember the Alamo!" echoing across the battlefield, Sam Houston's
army attacked the Mexican forces at San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. The Texans captured
Mexican president Santa Anna and won their independence. Texas had become
an independent nation.
The Lone Star Republic held its first presidential
election in 1836. War hero Sam Houston defeated Stephen Austin and became the
republic's first president. Texans voted to join the United States as soon as
possible.
The Lone Star flag was adopted in 1839 to represent the Republic
of Texas. When Texas joined the United States in 1845, the Lone Star flag became
the state flag. It is flown today all across Texas. Texans are proud
of their history. Today many students in Texas show their pride every morning by
saying a pledge and salute to the Texas flag.
"Honor the Texas flag. I pledge
allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible."
