Last updated 16Nov2006

My AOL e-mail address wasn't working properly for the past two years but is okay as of today and i plan on checking the mailbox on a weekly basis so please feel free to ask any questions and your questions, comments and observations are always welcome.

A)Table of Contents... what you are now reading...

B)Place names of each County, past and present,

---1) Introduction

---2) Key to codes used in Place Names of the 52 Southern Counties

---3) Each place name: former name; also known as name; later name; present name; place names it includes; for those on a county line, the counties it is part of; location; incorporation date; railroad name; if it had a US Post Offices 1859/60; if it was listed as a town in the 1880 US Census; Post Office years of operation with current Zip Code; population... each county has "last updated date" at the beginning of each county listing, this listing offers every town and that ever existed in South Texas and is grouped by the county (note: MANY towns appear in SEVERAL counties as it was the practice to name a town whatever name you wanted, they didn't care if other towns already had that name!)

C)Sources of information...

---1) and their links, used in Place Names of the 52 Southern Counties

D)Links to other pages (located at the very bottom of this long web page) a short cut to getting there is to tap once on your "End" button located on the right side of your keyboard between the "Delete" and "Page Down" buttons... and you'll be there in less than one second.

Place names of each County, past and present...

Welcome, this is a site that hopes to have the name of every town that ever existed in South Texas. If you've found one that you feel should be added to the list please e-mail the information to me at TexMexGenealogy@dummyaol.com citing your sources, and i'll cite you as the source.

Please note: all e-mail addresses have been distorted to read @dummyaol.com to deter spiders that read webpages and send SPAM to and from the e-mail addresses... flooding my e-mail boxes... so if you'd like to use any e-mail addresses then change it from @dummyaol.com to @aol.com

My goal is to have the following for each place name presented to you in this order: former name; also known as name; later name; present name; place names it includes; for those on a county line, the counties it is part of; location; incorporation date; railroad name; if it had a US Post Offices 1859/60; if it was listed as a town in the 1880 US Census; Post Office years of operation with current Zip Code; population

The following counties are listed here, those in CAPITAL LETTERS have been researched, an asterick * indicates it is currently being researched, others will be updated as time permits, and the appropriate Rootsweb County List will be notified: Aransas, Atascosa, Bandera, Bee, Bexar, Brazoria, Brooks, Calhoun, Cameron*, Chambers, Colorado, DeWitt, Dimmit, Duvall, Edwards, Fort Bend, Frio, Galveston, Goliad, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Harris, HIDALGO, Jackson, Jefferson, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Karnes, Kenedy, Kinney, Kleberg, La Salle, Lavaca, Live Oak, Matagorda, Maverick, McMullen, Medina, Nueces, Real, Refugio, San Patricio, Starr*, Uvalde, Val Verde, Victoria, Webb*, Wharton, Willacy, Wilson, Zapata*, and Zavala

Do you have the name of a place name and you aren't sure which county it belongs in? Then please read this paragraph. The place names are grouped by county, and you should use your Ctrl/f function to search for the place name. Careful... the spelling on a map may be wrong (you can't copyright a perfect map so mapmakers incorporate a minimal number of errors to prevent their competition from copying their research, hence roads and places that don't exist and misspellings) and common names are frequently repeated, so relying on a new road map to find old place names is a sure way to invite troubles. Many place names have changed their names over the years and until the early 20th century there was no control over naming a town large enough to have a Post Office, so common names were often repeated throughout the state and ocassionally within the same county. After compiling a list of towns your ancestors lived in from old letters and documents and listing the possible counties, you may be surprized to find you've been looking in the wrong counties. Looking in the wrong county is the most common error made in researching your family roots, so hopefully this listing will enable you to walk around those brick walls that have been blocking your progress. Thousands of researchers have come to me over the years for advice and assistance, as i am a professional researcher, and the most common mistake they've made is in chosing the right place, but it is in the wrong county.

All i ask from anyone who visits here is... please tell me if something is not right... whether it's a spelling error or not in alphabetical order. We can strive for perfection without expecting to be perfect... i would never want to mislead anyone by purposely offering wrong information. If an older town is missing from any of the counties and you know it... please send me an e-mail telling me as much about it as you know and please cite your sources... even if your memory is the only source and i'll list you and your e-mail address as the source. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Although i pay for AOL service i rarely use their browser as Internet Explorer works better, so when i visit my own sites but have found a trick that works wonders: Whenever AOL sends me a message that it is too busy and asks me to come back later i tap a few times rapidly on my "Refresh" button... and presto!... it wakes someone up and i immediately get in... to wait a minute or more for the download!

Why do we have copyrights? In this case... to make sure the information on this page will remain free for you to use... and to freely copy portions to your own files or forward them to researchers.

Key to codes used in Place Names of the 52 Southern Counties:

Blvd = boulevard
Bus Hwy = Business Hwy
colonia = colony (illegally created community, usually substandard)
EDA = Economically Disadvantaged Area (Colonia designation by US agencies)
Exp = Expressway (not quite built to Interstate standards)
FHLC = Family History Library Catalog (CD program used in Family History Centers)
FM = Farm to Market (rural road designation by Texas Highway Department)
Hwy = highway
inc = incorporated
MH = mobile home
PM = postmaster
PO = Post Office
RFD = Rural Free Delivery
RR = railroad (for a list of those in operation look under railroad below)
RT = Route (postal designation)
RV = recreation vehicle

note: Although we commonly use the abbreviations of Ft for Fort, Mt for Mount, St for Saint; Ste for Sainte, they usually aren't used here in any of the place names for a couple of simple reasons... doing so would make it too hard to keep place names in alphabetical order and this enables you to quickly search for them by using your Ctrl + f keys.

tip: use your Ctrl/f keys to quickly locate the word you are looking for... if it is a long, or hard to spell, name you shouldn't type all of it, just the first few should work... and a search only takes half a second.

"Once, on this earth, once, on this familiar spot of ground, walked other men and women, as actual as we are today, thinking their own thoughts, swayed by their own passions, but now all gone, one generation vanishing after another, gone as utterly as we ourselves shall shortly be gone like ghosts at cockcrow." -- G M Trevelyan
