The surname "Battefeld"
The given name "Bertha"
The (-2G), etc. after the names indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma.
Before Bertha was born, her sister Lillian was born on 01 Feb. 1892.
The St. Louis City Directory of 1894 lists Bertha Battefeld's father, William Battefeld as a laborer, living at 4332 Beck Ave. The Directories of 1895-96 list William as laborer living at 4358 Tholozan Ave. The 1897 Directory has the address as 4332 Tholozan. The 1898 and 1899 Directories again have 4358 Tholozan as the address. In the 1899 Directory at 4332 Tholozan we see John Battefeld, laborer, Henry Battefeld, also laborer, and Adam Battefeld, marble worker. John, Henry, and Adam may be brothers of Bertha's father.
The 1910 Fed. Census Soundex Index (B314) lists the family of William Battefeld in St. Louis (104 0466 0029). (supv. dist 10, enum. dist. 466, page 2B, dwelling 26, family 29 lines 57-60, dated 21 Apr.) With him is his wife Bertha, daughter Lillian 18 and daughter Bertha 16. He is 45, his wife is 38. William was born in Germany, his parents also. He immigrated in 1882 and is naturalized. I cannot read his occupation but it is not laborer. His wife was born in Missouri, her father in Germany, her mother in Switz?. She has no occupation. Only two children were born and they are living. They have been married 19 years. Daughter Bertha is a steamstress at a shirt factory. Lillian is working also (packer at a tobacco factory?). They all read, write and speak English. They are living in their own home (mortgaged) in ward 13 at 4249 Beck Ave. which is right near Morganford.

The 1920 Census for Missouri lists the family (vol. 98, supv. dist. 10, enum. dist. 249, sheet 7A,dwelling 149, family 155, line 42 dated 02 Jan.). Her husband, Aloys, is 28 years old, born in Missouri, and is residing at 4401 Virginia Ave. in ward 13 of St. Louis. They have a radio set. He is a merchant in a confectionary which is a surprising revelation since he was known as a draftsman before and after this time. Bertha (25), daughter Lois (2), and sister Lillian Battefeld (27) are all living there too. All were born in Missouri. Aloys' and Bertha's parents were born in Germany, but Lillian's mother was born in Missouri. Does that mean they were half-sisters? Lillian is a saleslady in a confectionary. Bertha and her daughter Lois have no occupation. The adults can read and write but are not in school. Aloys and Bertha can speak English. For some reason Lillian has no entry for spoken-English ability.
| Here is a picture of the buildings at 4401 and 4403 Virginia Ave. (at Osceola) taken before 1919 I think. The Severin Bakery, downstairs on the left, is the one owned by Erhart Severin (-2G) and his wife, Hedwig. The corner saloon was owned by Emma (-2G) and her husband Fred Marty. Other Winge people lived in apartments built above the saloon and in a building on the lot behind the saloon and to the left of the bakery. |

| Here is a picture of the buildings at 4401 and 4403 Virginia. The apartments were upstairs. The downstairs corner store was once a bakery-deli owned by the E. Severin Ricklin family. Although taken in early 2002 the buildings look very much like they did when the Al Winge family lived there. Click on the thumbnail to enlargen. |
