The given name "Philip"
The (-3G), etc., after the names indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma.
His mother was born in 1783 in Germany. His father was born 30 Sep. 1784 in Ober-Wöllstadt, Hesse-Darmstadt (in Germany). I do not know their marriage date and place. The father died in his home town. The mother immigrated to the U.S. between 1838 and 1850. The Jacob Corneli listed above may have been one of their children. Other than Jacob and the Philip of this page, I do not know about other children of Katharina and Philip Corneli (-4G).
Philip married Marie M. Mathis (-3G) on 7 Nov. 1850 in St. Louis. They then had the eight children (that I know of). Marie's maiden name in the St. Louis Birth Register for their son William is given as "Mathias" (entry #1784).
I have not yet found him in the 1850 Census.
The 1860 Fed. Census for Missouri (St. Louis ward 5, p. 124, dwelling 718, family 816, lines 27-30, dated 22 June) lists the family of Philip Corneli living in ward 5 of St. Louis, near 9th and Market St. Philip is 41 years old and was born in Germany. He is a street contractor and has real estate valued at $5,000 and presonal property at $200. His wife, Mary, is 28 and was also born in Germany. Their daughter Elizabeth is 9 and their son is 5. At the same address there is another, unrelated[?] family. A possible relative, Jacob Corneli, lives next door with his family. He is probably a brother and is also a street contractor.
The 1870 Census for Missouri (roll M593_816, printed page 328B, hand-entered page 50, dwelling #328, family #318, lines 27-35, dated 16 June) shows Philip, his wife and their family living in St. Louis, ward 6, Sub-division #12. Philip Corneli is 51 years old and is a laborer. He was born in Hessen-Darmstadt and his parents were also foreign-born. His wife Mary is 49 years old and is keeping house. She was born in France and her parents were foreign-born. Their house has a value of $5,000 and their personal property has a value of $500. Their seven children are listed; all were born in Missouri; their parents were of foreign-born. Daughter Elizabeth is 19 years old and is at home. Son Philip B. is 15 and is at school. Son Adolph is 9 and is at school. Daughter Mary is 7 and is at school. Daughter Louisa is 5 and is at home. Daughter Mina is 3 and is at home. Son Otto is 4 months and is at home. Jacob Corneli's family is living next door.
At the time of son William's birth (Christmas Day 1872), the family is living at 3616 Olive St.
In the 1880 Fed. Census for Missouri Philip and his family are counted twice because of census fraud. In the first enumeration (vol. 35, enum. dist. 133, sheet 15, dwelling 83, family 89, line 24) they were living at 2614 Olive. The surname was incorrectly spelled "Cornali". He is a 61 year old city contractor. He and his parents were born in Prussia. His wife, Mary, is 48 years old and is keeping house. She and her parents were born in Alsace which was then a German area. Their children are: Lizzie (28), Ben P. (25), Adolph (20), Theresa (18), Minnie (13), Otto (10), and Willie (7). All children were born in Missouri, their father in Prussia and their mother in Alsace. The youngest three are in school; Lizzie and Theresa are at home; Ben and Adolph are store clerks. The family of Jacob Cornali [sic!] appears on the same Census page. They are neighbors, living at 2618 Olive.
In the second enumeration for the St. Louis 1880 Census (T9_0734, vol. 41, enum. dist 344, printed page no. 242A, sheet 1, dwelling 10, family 15, line 40, dated 10 Nov.) the surname is spelled correctly. They are living in the 18th ward, 188th precinct. The differences between the two Census enumerations are as follows: The first child, Lizzie, is now 29; the second child's name is Philip B. and is now 26; the last child is called William and is now 8; Theresa has the middle initial "M."; the mother is now 49; the father's occupation is "street contractor; the father and his parents were born in Darmstadt; the children Philip B. and Adolph are clerks; the occupation column for the other children is blank. The family of Jacob Corneli is not listed as a neighbor, but a search in the LDS index to the 1880 Census shows Jacob in T9_0734, page 243C (St. Louis), two pages after Philip's family.
The St. Louis City Death Records, 1850-1908, p. 286, lists Philip Corneli, died 01 Feb. 1883. He was living at 2614 Olive St., buried in St. Peter's Cemetery. He was born in Germany. Volume, SLGS roll, and MO Archives references are not given in the Ancestry.com db. The St. Louis Pub. Lib. Obit. Index for 1883 lists Philip Corneli with an obit in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on p. 5 of the Feb. 02 newspaper..
------------------------------------------
The 1892-1895 St. Louis Directories list Philip F. Corneli, barber, living at 1317 Washington, but this is probably the son. The 1896 Directory lists the son at 1315 Washington. The 1898 Directory lists his widow.
Philip died before the 1900 Census because his widow's name as well as some of the children appear in that Census (vol. 98, e.d. 308, sheet 2, line 10) living at 3017 Easton.
Philip's wife died after him in 1909.
Some dates, places and names were supplied by a living descendant.
--------------------------------------
There is a Philip F. Corneli who is a barber in St. Louis. For a while he lived on Washington St. Do not confuse him with our Philip B. Corneli. I do not know if there is a relationship between the two men.
There is a George Corneli, a draftsman, who is living at the same address as our Philip's widow in the 1890's. I do not know if he is another son of our Philip and Mary. Perhaps he is a son of Jacob Corneli who, with his family, was living next to Philip's family at the time of the 1880 Census.
Son Adolph appears in the 1899 Census (sic! St. Louis Directory?) as secretary of the Schisler-Corneli Seed Co. at 813 N. 4th, living at 3840a Page Blvd.
The 1900 Census does have an Adolph Corneli with his wife living at 3840 Page in St. Louis (vol. 98, e.d. 325? or 225?, sheet 5, line 31). The 1899 St. Louis Directory lists Adolph working for the Schisler-Corneli Seed Co. There is also a Jacob Corneli in the 1900 Census (vol. 99, e.d. 332, sheet 3). There is also a Charles Corneli in the 1900 Census; perhaps a nephew of Philip. There is a George Corneli in the 1898 St. Louis Directory and a Benjamin (Philip B.?) Corneli listed in the 1899 Directory who is working for the Schisler-Corneli Seed Co. Jacob Corneli is also found in the 1880 Census living at 2618 Olive (vol. 35, e.d. 133, sheet 15, line 46).
Benjamin P. (sometimes called Philip B.) Corneli was their second child that lived to adulthood. He was born on 03 Apr. 1855 in St. Louis. He became president of the family-owned Schyler-Corneli Seed Co. He died on 07 Jan. 1926 in St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond Heights, MO and was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis County.
