William was born in Alsace-Lorraine of German parents (according to the 1920 Census). According to his death certificate his birth date was 13 Aug. 1865. |
Adam Battefeld was born about 1870 in Alsace-Lorraine. I am not sure if he was William's brother.
Three other siblings were born between 1870 and 1876; two of them died early.
His brother John H. Battefeld was born on 07 Feb. 1876 in Germany--probably in the state of Alsace-Lorraine. Sister Minnie was born in Germany about 1879.
 |
He immigrated in 1881 (according to the 1930 Census) and was naturalized in 1890 (according to the 1920 Census). Ancestry.Com has an image of a passenger list of the ship Mosel from Bremen, Germany and Southhampton, England, which arrived at New York on 09 Aug. 1880 |
| (New York Passenger Lists 1851-1891: list 1016, line 24 on microfilm roll 429). On this ship was a Wilhelm Battefeld, age 15 from Germany, who is probably the William of this page. He was accompanied by a Catharina Battefeld who may have been an older sister, born in Germany ca. 1859. |
An Adam Battefeld may be William's brother. Adam appears in the St. Louis Directory as one who works with marble. However, he was from Hesse.
The 1890 St. Louis Directory shows William Battefeld as a laborer living at 3703 Morgan Ford Rd. It shows a John Battefeld at the same address.
 |
He and Bertha Koenig (-3G) married on 15 May 1890 at St. John's Lutheran Church in St. Louis. The church has been on Morganford Rd. at Chippewa, near their home, for at least 137 years. The 1930 Census says he was 29 when he married which puts the marriage at a date closer to 1895, but his daughters were born ca. 1892 and 1893. |
Daughter Lillian (-2G) was born on 01 Feb. 1892. Daughter Bertha Battefeld (-2G) born 15 Aug. 1893
The St. Louis city Directory of 1894 lists William Battefeld as a laborer, living at 4332 Beck Ave. The Directories of 1895-96 list William as laborer living at 4358 Tholozan Ave. The 1897 Directory has the address as 4332 Tholozan. The 1898 and 1899 Directories again have 4358 Tholozan as the address. In the 1899 Directory at 4332 Tholozan we see John Battefeld, laborer, Henry Battefeld, also laborer, and Adam Battefeld, marble worker. John, Henry, and Adam may be brothers of Bertha or brothers of William.
The 1900 Fed. Census for Missouri (supv. dist 11, enum. dist. 361, sheet 10A, stamped page 147A, dwelling 183, family 192, lines 29-32, dated 11 June) shows the family of William Battefeld living at 4358 Tholozan Ave. in ward 24 of St. Louis. William is 35 and was born in Germany, parents also. He is a tile moulder(?). He immigrated in 1881, has "Na" status and has been in the U.S. 19 years. He read, writes and speaks English. His wife Bertha is 28 years old and was born in April 1882 in Missouri, her parents in Germany. She had 3 children; 2 are living. She read, writes and speaks English. The have been married 10 years. Daughter Lillian is 8 years old and was born in Feb. 1892 in Missouri. Daughter Bertha is 6 years old and was born in Aug. 1893 in Missouri. The daughters are both in school.

His parents live next door (4332 Tholozan). John Battefeld is 74 years old and his wife Gertrude is 62. They have been married 40 years and had 7 children, 5 of whom are still living. Living with them are three of those children: Adam, Henry and Minnie. Henry could be John Henry, William's brother. Since I could find no other Battefeld living in Missouri, the missing child might be a married daughter. 1881 is given as the parents' immigration date from Germany.
| Here is a picture of William Battefeld. I do not know the date of this picture, but it was taken by a professional photographer in St. Louis, most likely before 1910. Appreciation is extended to his great-grandson, Thomas, for the digital copy. Click the thumbnail to enlarge. |

His father died ca 26 Jan. 1906 in St. Louis. A death notice or burial notice appears in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on 27 Jan. 1906.
The 1910 Fed. Census Soundex Index (B314) lists the family of William Battefeld in St. Louis (104 0466 0029). (supv. dist 10, enum. dist. 466, page 2B, dwelling 26, family 29 lines 57-60, dated 21 Apr.) With him is his wife Bertha, daughter Lillian 18 and daughter Bertha 16. He is 45, his wife is 38. William was born in Germany, his parents also. He immigrated in 1882 and is naturalized. I cannot read his occupation but it is not laborer. His wife was born in Missouri, her father in Germany, her mother in Switz?. She has no occupation. Only two children were born and they are living. They have been married 19 years. Daughter Bertha is a steamstress at a shirt factory. Lillian is working also (packer at a tobacco factory?). They all read, write and speak English. They are living in their own home (mortgaged) in ward 13 at 4249 Beck Ave. which is right near Morganford.
In 1910 Anna Battefeld was living at 4332 Tholozan as a boarder with several families. She was 71 and was widowed. She immigrated in 1879.
William was the informant for the death certificate of his father-in-law, Herman Koenig on 16 Aug. 1913. At the time William was living at 4249 [4349?] Beck in St. Louis.
His mother (Anna, née Schoeneweis) may have died on 27 Mar. 1919 at her home, 4332 Tholozan in St. Louis [see below]. An obituary and a burial notice appear in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch of 27 Mar. and 03 Apr. 1919.
The 1920 Fed. Census for Missouri (T625_950, enum. dist. 259, sheet 5B, lines 55-57, dated 06 Jan.) shows William and his wife living at 4349 Beck Ave. (near Morganford Rd) in ward 13 of St. Louis (city) (house 88, family 120). He is 54 years old, born in Lothringen, Alsace-Lorraine of German parents. He is working as a laborer of fine clay. He was naturalized in 1890. His wife, Bertha, is 47 years old, born in Missouri of a German father and a Swiss mother. She has no occupation. They read, write and speak English. They own the house. [Their daughter Bertha is married and living elsewhere. Their daughter Lillian is single living with her sister.]

His brother John Henry appears in the 1920 Census for St. Louis, living at 3536a Morgan Ford Rd, near William. He was born ca. 1875 in Alsace, Germany and is 44 years old at this time.
His wife Bertha died on 09 May 1924 at 1 AM according to her death certificate. She died of chronic arteriosclerosis (cerebral) at her home. She was 52 years, 1 month, 6 days of age, having been born on 03 Apr. 1872 in St. Louis. Her parents were Herman Koenig and Fannie Urich, both born in Germany. [Her mother was still living.] Bertha and her husband (who was the informant) were living at 4249 Beck Ave. in St. Louis. Her occupation was housewife. The funeral was handled by Ziegenhein Bros. at 2623 Cherokee St. and she was buried on the 11th in Concordia Cemetery.
The 1930 Fed. Census for Missouri (T626_1235, supv. dist. 9, enum. dist.96-475, page 21B, lines 80-81, dwelling 418, family 469, dated 21 Apr.) shows William and one of his daughters. He is 64, living in St. Louis (city), ward 13 block 5155, at 3700 Morgan Ford Rd. He was born in Germany of parents also born in Germany. He immigrated in 1881 and has the naturalization status of "Na". He is retired. He is a widower who married at age 29. Living with him is his daughter Lillian who is 38 years old and single. [His other daughter, Bertha, is married and living elsewhere. His wife is probably deceased.] Lillian is head of household, renting the house at $60/month. She is a merchant at a dry goods store which she owns. She was born in Missouri of a father born in Germany and a mother born in Missouri.

William died on 12 May 1945 according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Obituary Index at the St. Louis Public Library. There is an obituary on 13 May and a burial notice on 17 May. His death certificate states that he died on 12 May 1945 at his home, 3700 Morganford in St. Louis. |
| Cause of death was infirmities of age [old age]. He was born on 13 Aug. 1865 in Germany of John Battefeld and Gertrude Schuneweiss, both born in Germany. He was 79 years, 8 months and 29 days of age and had lived in the community for 65 years. He was a retired tile molder in the manufacturing of tile products industry. Beiderwieden F. H., Inc. (1936 St. Louis Ave.) was the funeral home and Sunset Burial Park was his burial site on 15 May. The certificate stated that he was married [not widowed] to a Bertha, but this information must be referring to the Bertha who died in 1924 (see above). If he did marry again it happened after the 1930 Census, but his daughter Lillian of 3700 Morganford was the informant. |

His brother John Henry (-3G) did marry and had a son Raymond John Battefeld (-2G) who in turn had a son named Raymond Robert Battefeld (-1G). The death certificate says John was a police officer in St. Louis. His usual address was 5600 Arsenal St. in St. Louis. John died on 29 Feb. 1952 at the City Infirmary of pneumonia which he got after suffering a fall in the infirmary on Arsenal St. on 09 Dec. 1951. He was born in Germany on 07 Feb. 1876 of unknown parents. A person with the same last name and the address of 1721 Delnorte (perhaps his wife) was the informant. Ziegenhein Bros. was the funeral home and Oak Grove Cemetery at 7800 St. Charles Rock Rd. was the removal location on 03 Mar.
His daughter Lillian was living with her sister's family during the 1920 Census (enum. dist. 259, page 5B). See her web page: click here. Lillian's S. S. # was 487-36-7105, issued in Missouri. She died in 1969; at that time she was living in Zip Code area 63126 which is in Sappington or Crestwood in St. Louis County.
An Anna Battefeld died on 27 Mar. 1919 at her home, 4332 Tholozan in St. Louis. She was born on 07 May 1838 in Germany and had the maiden name of Schoeneweis which seems to be the same family as that of William's mother. She died of apoplexy (cerebral) contributed by senility arteriosclerosis. Since the informant was a Jno H. Battefeld (address also 4332 Tholozan), I am guessing that she was the same as Gertrude and therefore was William's mother. The address matches several of those where William and his father lived. Ann was widowed when she died so the informant was probably her son and William's brother. Ziegenhein Bros. at 2623 Cherokee was the funeral director and Concordia Cemetery was her burial site on the 31st.
