Spirits aren't confined to where we think are the usual places, such as cemeteries, but can be found anywhere--maybe even in your own home. The Washington, D.C. area is rich in history, hauntings and ghost lore. This page was created for those of you who believe or are interested in ghosts, are out there investigating them right now, or are not quite sure.

WHAT'S MY STORY?
My name is Lawana Holland and I'm a Washingtonian. My own experiences and those of others I knew made me want to know more about ghosts and hauntings. Was I alone? Did others experience these things? I'd just like to believe that most ghosts are aware and just interested in our day-to-day lives. Like us, some are pranksters, some just want to be near family or friends, and some just want to be left alone. I do not maintain a group and consider myself more of a researcher. I just hope that those coming to this site will learn a little more or just plain enjoy it. If you have Haunted D.C. Area stories or pictures, please feel free to email me at

WHAT'S IN A NAME?
What's the website name about? My grandmother told me about how her own grandmother and older relatives would encounter ghosts on the back roads near their home in rural Virginia. Because they would see them as a mist that would suddenly appear (even though there was no fog), they would say they were "meeting steam." Modern ghost researchers would probably classify what they saw as ectoplasm.

According to a 1999 Gallup Poll, over half--54%--of young adults 18-29 polled said they believed in ghosts.
