12/9/98 - The January issue of McCalls has hit the
stands.
The NicksFix reports that Stevie will not be performing
at
this year's A Christmas Carol
in Phoenix, as she has done for the past two years.
Christmas time is coming and Stevie's fans have always been
generous with sending her gifts. However, Stevie has asked
that in lieu of gifts, please send donations to her favourite
charities. Check Ginny Kamano's Page
for further information.
11/30/98 - The January 1999 issue of McCalls magazine
features a
2 1/2 page article on Stevie!
Sheryl Crow and Stevie will be in the studio in December
to work on Stevie's
new solo album.
11/7/98 - Stevie performed
at the City Of Hope Benefit Concert on
Wednesday,
November 4. The theme was one-hit-wonders, so Stevie sang
Alannah Myles' one big hit, the Elvis-inspired Black Velvet.
She
also sang the Elton John/Kiki Dee classic duet It Takes Two
along
with her friend Don Henley. Ginny Kamano has reported that VH-1
filmed the whole concert, hopefully it will air sometimes so that
we can all get to see this show!

to Rhiannon...the legend..
 Rhiannon
rings like a bell through the night,
and
wouldn't you love to love her?
Back in
1973, Stevie read a novel called "Triad", by Mary
Leader. There was a character in the book that
had a beautiful name that Stevie loved.....Rhiannon. So she
wrote
a lovely, mystical ballad about Rhiannon, who "takes
to the sky like a bird in flight"... It wasn't until
a little while later that she discovered the Welsh mythology
about the goddess Rhiannon, Maker of Birds (as in
the books by Evangeline Walton). Truly, the magic
of Rhiannon had already reached Stevie because it was ironic how
her original lyrics so closely matched much of the story.
Fleetwood Mac recorded an uptempo rock version of Rhiannon
in 1975 and it enjoyed much success on the charts and made
Stevie a household name. She gave herself totally to this song,
twirling
about the stage draped in flowing black chiffon,
literally tearing her vocal cords (in the early years) to deliver
electrifying performances night after night. This was the
beginning of Stevie's visual image - the ragged black chiffon skirts,
the long black chiffon sleeves, the wild hair....all of this inspired
many fans to come to concerts dressed in similar attire. Stevie soon realized
that her costumes were a big part of her fans' enjoyment and went
on to create additional looks (with designer Margi Kent) also
sometimes associated with certain songs,
in the tradition of the early Rhiannon look

Just like the White Winged Dove.....flying
solo!
![[IMAGE]](rosebt1.gif)
Bella
Donna, Stevie's first solo album, was released in 1981,
followed by the "White Winged Dove Tour". This tour was
unfortunately limited to the middle of the country, and West....
It was a hard time for Stevie to be touring, her dearest
friend Robin Snider Anderson was battling leukemia. The
LP spent a tremendous amount of time on the charts, spinning
off such radio hits as Edge of Seventeen and Stop Draggin'
My
Heart Around (a
duet written by Stevie's longtime friend,
Tom Petty). Stevie and Tom filmed Stop Draggin' video which
showed the two of them in the studio which was shown frequently on MTV.
There are also two variations of a wonderful Edge
of Seventeen video
that for some reason were never publicly released. Stevie was filmed
in concert, solo, for the first time by HBO at the Fox Wilshire Theatre
in Los Angeles (in December, 1981). The extraordinary concert was
first broadcast in 1982 and was then released as a home-video. This
show is a must-see for all Stevie
fans! One of my favourite things about
it is the inclusion of the terrific live version of Gold And
Braid, a song
recorded for Bella Donna but which didn't make it to the final
release.
![[IMAGE]](rosebt1.gif)
 The Wild
Heart was released in 1983, following a time of
great sadness in Stevie's life. In October 1982, Robin
had lost her battle with leukemia, and this tragedy inspired the
final track, a haunting
song named Nightbird....listen carefully and
you can hear Stevie sadly call out Robin's name near the end
("Pulls back the net and it's hard to see her face.....Robin."
The biggest hit from this album, written on Stevie's wedding day, was
the riveting dance track Stand Back, whose pop synthesized
background was the work of (The Artist Formerly Known As) Prince.
Stevie has said that this is her favourite song to perform live.
There was an epic Civil War dramatic video filmed for Stand
Back,
with Stevie looking just adorable in a green velvet antebellum gown
riding a horse....but that video was never released. It was replaced on
MTV by a slick, very 80's dance-style production. If Anyone
Falls,
co-written with Sandy Stewart, inspired a lovely and ethereal black &
white video, filmed in a style visually reminiscent of the 1940's
Jean Cocteau film "Beauty and the Beast" which inspired Stevie
to write one of the most gorgeous songs of her career, of the
same name and on this album. During this time period, Stevie
made several notable television appearances to promote the album,
including "Saturday Night Live"
and "Solid Gold" (to my knowledge,
the
only time the lovely Nightbird has been performed live
for an audience). While on tour, Stevie invited a whole orchestra
to join her at the Meadowlands performance (outside
in order to recreate the full, lush sound of the album
version of
Beauty And The Beast...a night that some
lucky fans will never forget!
![[IMAGE]](rosebt1.gif)
Stevie
released Rock a Little in 1985, followed by an
extensive tour that saw her making second loops through some cities
while on tour in 1986. Talk to Me was the first single
(written by Chas Sanford who also wrote another hit single that Stevie
liked, John Waite's
Missing You), followed by the energetic
dance track I Can't Wait, and then the tender Has
Anyone
Ever Written Anything
for You (a song inspired by her
relationship with Joe Walsh, of the Eagles). Has Anyone...
is now a standard closing song for Stevie's live concerts, a
beautiful and touching end to any magical evening of her music.
Stevie's mom has also called it her own favourite song..
On August 20, 1986 - the last night of the tour - the concert was
filmed at Red Rocks, CO for video release. This is the last solo Stevie show
that has been put out on the market commercially. In recent years,
this wonderful concert was even made available on enhanced CD-Rom
to be played through a computer. The original concert was
retouched with many overdubs and beautiful photo
closeups of Stevie's face, but even still, it remains an
excellent document of the era when Stevie was rockin'
more than just a little!
![[IMAGE]](rosebt1.gif)
The
Other Side of the Mirror was Stevie's next solo release,
in 1989. Rooms on Fire was the first single, which included
a
beautiful video filmed at Stevie's castle home on Angelo Drive,
in Los Angeles. This was the first time Stevie actually wrote
a video storyboard herself, creating a tale about a woman who
finally meets her soulmate and
then loses him far too soon. A
bit of Mirror trivia....the elaborate red velvet gown Stevie wore
for
the cover photo of the album was originally a movie costume
used in the mini series "North and South", worn by Mary Cosby
(complete with huge hoopskirts) during a Christmas party scene.
The album's premiere party was a gala event, with Stevie
dressed
in a blue satin "Alice In Wonderland" outfit and
red velvet
pouches
containing silver hand mirrors were given to guests.
In addition, I've
seen photos of an adorable little girl dressed in a
miniature version of
Stevie's red velvet gown (does anyone know this child's
identity?)
The talented Bruce
Hornsby joined Stevie on this album, dueting on
yet another single release, this one called
Two Kinds Of Love.
Another track, Doing the Best I Can, even
more poignant when Stevie
performed it on British television. She played piano
as she sang, with
only Sharon Celani and Lori Perry-Nicks as additional
accompaniment.
![[IMAGE]](rosebt1.gif)
When
Stevie was asked to put out a greatest hits package,
she says that she opted for a "Stevie's Favourite Songs" theme
instead, releasing TimeSpace in 1991. This album also
included three new songs, Love's a Hard Game to Play
(co-written for her by Brett Michaels), the Desert Storm inspired,
emotional Desert Angel and also Sometimes It's a Bitch,
penned for Stevie by Jon Bon Jovi. The latter song was one that
Stevie hesitated to record because she said she didn't feel comfortable
singing the word "bitch".... and she also said she was afraid
that her fans weren't ready to hear her sing a song like that.
However, she realized the lyrics were indeed telling of her lifestyle as
a rock and roll woman on the road. There is a rare video
that was filmed for the song, especially treasured because of all
the wonderful film bits of Stevie worked into a collage
(my favourites being an outtake from the 1982 HBO concert,
Stevie dancing about the stage with a wreath of flowers on her
head - and also an inside look at one of her famous photo
sessions).

  ![[IMAGE]](rosebt1.gif)
Street
Angel was a long time coming, not released until
1994 due to some production troubles. The first single,
Maybe Love was co-written by Sandy Stewart, Stevie's friend
and collaborator from The Wild Heart era. Blue Denim
is a catchy song that was released as a single but unfortunately
did not get enough airplay to promote it, and the fabulous
concert video filmed to back the song was never played on
MTV or VH-1. Stevie made two more television appearances
in August of 1994....the first being a somewhat special
appearance on David Letterman's show (in 1986, Letterman
had a weeklong running gag about Stevie, claiming she would
be appearing on the show and then that her management
company told him in no uncertain terms to stop mentioning
her name)....during her 1994 appearance on the show, Stevie
seemed to have quite a sense of humour about that old incident,
and she performed a tremendous live Blue Denim. She
performed the same song on her
Jay Leno appearance,
but that interview seemed a bit less comfortable with Jay seemingly
focused on her hair!
In July 1994, just prior to going out on tour, Stevie
wrote one of
her most powerful songs - on the
4th Annual Day of Compassion for those afflicted with HIV.
This song is called Angels Of Passage (not Angels IN
Passage, as commonly reported earlier).
"But from my heart, I leave behind... great expectations, and that
you will
find the answers to your questions...
And that life will once more...
be a celebration, and that you will be touched by an angel... "
  ![[IMAGE]](rosebt1.gif)
Stevie was not too visible after
the end of the Street Angel
tour in the autumn of 1994. However, in 1996 she took
"to the sky like a bird in flight" as she performed free concerts
in Tampa, FL (July 4) and on the Boston Common (October 10),
and also performed in Columbus, OH (August 24). She
joined Fleetwood Mac
in their highly successful reunion which included an MTV special and
U.S.
tour, which ended in November, 1997. In addition,
she performed a few songs in Phoenix in March of 1998,
at a Don Henley & Friends benefit concert and at Stormy Weather '98 in
April.
   ![[IMAGE]](rosebt1.gif)
Stevie
began touring on May 27, 1998 in Hartford, CT to promote
the triumphant release of her 3-CD boxed set career retrospective
entitled Enchanted (brother Chris picked the name). The set list
included many gems such as the title track, After The Glitter
Fades,
Garbo, Sleeping Angel, Twisted, Rose Garden
After The Glitter Fades and Gold And Braid. And
of
course, there were plenty of familiar hits such as
the ever-classic Rhiannon and Dreams..
Reconsider Me was a song written by Warren Zevon, recorded
in 1986 but never released
until this boxed set. It was put out as a radio
promotional CD single, but not as a commercial one.
To close the Enchanted Tour, Stevie performed at
A Day In The Garden
(Woodstock 1998.) Her WMGK radio
interview in Philadelphia on 6/19/98 hinted at
several upcoming benefit concerts which kept her onstage through
the fall...including the Andre Agassi Benefit in Las Vegas (September 26)
and the City Of Hope Benefit in Los Angeles (November 4). She has
remained
busy with her two specials on VH-1 which debuted November
1 - "Storytellers"
and "Behind The Music." She even guested on Sheryl Crow's "Storytellers."
Stevie has been busy working on her upcoming album, entitled Trouble
In Shangri-la, since summer 1999. Sheryl Crow collaborated on, and
produced several tracks already recorded. By the fall, Stevie
began working in Atlanta with TLC producer Dallas Austin. The album
is rumored for release sometime in fall, 2000, after having been
pushed
back from the original October 1999 date. Stevie performed a small.
"Millenium Tour" in late December/early January, and she rang in
the New Year with fans, and her parents, by performing in Las Vegas.
More details about this mini-tour , as well as Stevie's September 2000
benefit concert in Phoenix are on The Nicks
Fix.
![[IMAGE]](rosebt1.gif)
The
Trouble In Shangri La Tour kicked off in Pittsburgh in July, 2001.
Stevie's good
Sheryl Crow joined her onstage for the first several concerts,
first appearing onstage during Gold Dust Woman. Sheryl also
sings
two of her own songs, Every Day Is A Winding Road (with Stevie)
and
My Favorite Mistake. The song Everyday provided
fans with the first
video, a dreamy sequence full of interesting imagery such as Stevie
dancing through a forest and acorns and leaves woven through
her hair as she sits at a crumbling banquet table. She is also shown
in her familiar black chiffon Rhiannon outfit, holding a
crystal
ball cupped in her hands. The Sorcerer video brings in Sheryl
Crow
again and Stevie is splendid in her cream colored outfit. One of
Stevie's best television moments during this tour has to be her appearance
on the Rosie Show, during which the two ladies giggled like old friends
and Stevie's stage was beautifully draped with dangling crystals
and lit candles.
