(2) This section of the archaeological site plan shows a detailed view of the western quarter of the excavated part of the Aksumite city. Mat-E1 contains a moderate-sized palace and a couple of smaller villas. Mat-E2 appears to consist of smaller homes and shops, with a narrow twisting street cutting through the center of the complex; click here to see a photo showing the street and surrounding building foundations, looking south toward the Mat-E1 villa and Amba Saim.
