MONUMENT EFFORT UPDATE-Nov. 2000
The Effort began slowly, not knowing what would be required or expected. The 107th's members voted in February, 1999 at the Olustee, Fl. reenacment to undertake the effort to place a marker or monument at Cemetery hill in 2003 to coincide with the 140th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and the 140th Anniversary Reenactment. Lt. Wayne Watts, Commanding Officer and Randall K. Garvin, former CO have worked on establishing the Monument diligently.
We received our first setback when we learned that Gettysburg National Military Park and the Department of the Interior have a Moratorium in place on new monuments at the Park. Rather than seek to lift the Moratorium, we have decided to seek an exception to , given the nature of the issue, that being the 107th's actions having been overlooked for 140 years.
Lt. Watts has located a stone cutter who can engrave the monument for us, should we be successful in the Effort. Mr. Garvin contacted the Honorable Charles E. Bennett and inquired as to whether he could assist. The Honorable Mr. Bennett could render no assistance, but suggested we contact the senator who has Gettysburg in his district. That Senator is the Honorable Rick Santorum, R.-Pa.
Mr. Garvin has also been working with local NPS rangers to establish a new Living History Program at Fort Caroline NP in Jacksonville, which maintains St. John's Bluff, the site of 3 major Federal Naval engagements between US Navy vessels and Confederate batteries located on the Bluff during 1862.
We have been patiently waiting for the 2000 elections to conclude before we take further steps. We will mount a letter writing campaign to show citizen's interest in the Effort soon.
We are still NOT accepting funding for the Effort until we can get the exception approved.
FURTHUR UPDATES WILL BE POSTED ON THIS PAGE IN THE NEAR FUTURE!
