"The best self-exploration, self-discovery, and professional
development process in existence for teachers today." The National
Board
for Professional
Teaching
Standards (NBPTS) process is quickly becoming
an educational
standard for teachers. This process helped me to discover a lot about
myself and my teaching styles, including which teaching methods were effective
and the methods which needed to be changed. Below are some websites that
will help candidates through the process, as well as give more information about
the process. (Please note the Listserv - Yahoo Groups link at the left! The
Yahoo Groups (previously eGroups) are a great reference and source of support and information.)
The
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards works to strengthen the
teaching profession and to improve student learning in America's schools.
We are establishing
high standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, and
we are developing a new system of advanced, voluntary certification for
teachers. Our aim is to certify all teachers who meet the standards.
This guide supplements the wealth of information and instructions in the
portfolio provided by NBPTS. It does not supplant the NBPTS materials— you are
still expected to read everything in the NBC assessment box provided by NBPTS.
You also are expected to read thoroughly all additional NBC materials provided
by NBPTS. It is critical that you familiarize yourself with the National Board
standards, and the instructions for the assessment materials. Again, read
everything!
Commitment, subjects taught,
responsibility, practices, are learning communities make up the five core areas
of the NBPTS process. It's around these five core areas that I have
organized the National Board's Professional Teaching Standards into Objectives
and Criteria for What Teachers Should Know and Be Able to Do. An Overview
of the objectives is presented here along with corresponding criteria for COMMITMENT,
SUBJECTS TAUGHT,
RESPONSIBILITY,
PRACTICE and
LEARNING COMMUNITIES.
If you have used the National Board eGroups you are probably familiar with
Sheree Rensel, who is better known as "Wizzlewolf." She is full
of great information and suggestions about the National Board process and has
been an invaluable support to the eGroups National Board community. Her
website is full of great National Board Links and information, including
assessment, educational strategies, science and math links to name just a
few. The National Board area of her website is just a small portion of the
"Total Wizzlewolf Experience." To visit her main homepage click

NEA formally supports NBPTS through its resolutions and other
policy documents, and considers National Board Certification to be a valuable
professional development option for experienced teachers. NEA also sees
advanced, voluntary certification as an important part of NEA's efforts to
enhance standards for—as well as the public's perception of—the teaching
profession.
This listserv provides an electronic network for NBC candidates,
mentor supporters of candidates, current Nationally Board Certified Teachers and
anyone who would like to know more about the NBC process. As a listserv
member you will be able to post questions, build support networks and share
information and documents. Everyone will be able to respond and provide
answers, ideas and moral support and encouragement to Florida candidates.
In 1991, a committee of middle and high school art teachers and
other visual arts educators appointed by the National Board began the process of
developing advanced professional standards for art teachers of adolescents and
young adults. This site offers a ton of information on both the process for Art
and in general.
Articles On NBPTS
How do states and school systems support teachers who seek
certification by the NBPTS? Can teachers obtain samples of exemplary portfolios
prepared by those who have earned certification? How long does certification
last, and how will teachers be re-certified when their initial certification
expires? Other Q & A
The authors present the findings of one of the first studies of teachers who
have participated in the certification process of the National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards, and they offer recommendations for assessing
the impact of such certification and for making it a more effective and widely
used part of the education system.
