UPCOUNTRY SOUTH CAROLINA HERITAGE
Welcome to the Upcountry South Carolina Heritage Homepage. This site has information about the heritage of the Upcountry of South Carolina, especially northern Spartanburg and Greenville Counties. This site also covers the 13th Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers of the Confederate States of America. More men from Spartanburg County belonged to this regiment than any other during the War Between the States. Almost all the leaders of the 13th Regiment were from Spartanburg County and Companies B, C, E, F and I were made up of mostly men from Spartanburg County. Two companies of the 13th were from Lexington County; two companies from Newberry County and one company was from Laurens County. Also covered is Company B of the 22nd Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers, also of Spartanburg County. Company B of the 22nd is unique in that it was at ground zero at the Petersburg mine explosion on July 30 of 1864, known as the Petersburg Crater. Of 36 men of the Company there, only 5 survived the incident. The following families of Spartanburg and Greenville Counties are covered on this homepage: Johnson, Pruitt, Foster, Clayton, Babb (originally from Laurens County), Cantrell, Wingo, and the Ransom Reynolds family of Union County, SC. Some areas may be under construction. If so, come back and they will be filled as quickly as time permits.
This site is dedicated to the memory of the brothers, John Tyler Johnson, Marion Johnson, Green Johnson and William Johnson, all privates of Company E of the 13th Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers. Also in memory and honor of John Tyler Johnson's great grandchildren, F. Vernon Johnson, Broadus C. Johnson, B. Willard Johnson and Roy A. Johnson (also brothers) who served their country in the armed forces in World War II.
