Original Air Date: March 20, 2001
Logan's investigation of a decade-old conspiracy leads him to a sleepy
little vacation town called Cape Haven. Though miles from the urban chaos of
Seattle, Haven bears its own scars from the Pulse. From the moment Max and
Logan arrive, there's an eerie, stagnant feel permeating the air. No longer
the quaint, friendly resort town it once was, Cape Haven is now practically
a ghost town. Hoping to make the best of it, Max settles in and soon
befriends a shy young boy named Sage. Though he reveals very little about
himself, Max takes a protective interest in this sad little boy.
Noticing how several of the local men seem to view Sage with a mixture of
both hate and fear, Max suspects there is more to Sage than meets the eye.
Meanwhile, Logan's inquiries start meeting serious resistance from the
locals. Convinced that Herman Colberg, the sheriff of Cape Haven, is the
former Seattle police officer he seeks, Logan confronts him with details
from ten years ago. Colberg tells Logan he must be mistaking him for someone
else.
Meanwhile, Sage takes Max to see the burnt shell of a nearby house. The
place burnt shortly after the Pulse in an accident that claimed the lives of
all the residents, including a young three-year-old boy. While they tour the
house, something freaks Sage out and he runs from the place. Max goes after
the boy, but is wracked by a seizure and can't catch up. Later that day, a
townie by the name of B.C. warns Sage in no uncertain terms to stay away
from Max. But when Max persists in contacting Sage, she realizes that the
boy who burnt in the accidental fire was actually Sage -- Sage is really Sam
Gilan, who survived the fire and whose identity has been kept secret by
Trudy, the town doctor.
When B.C. and his friends find out what Max has learned, they visit Logan
and Max, the threat of violence heavy in the air. Max and Logan know that
these are the people responsible for starting the so-called "accidental"
fire; they killed Sam Gilan's parents in a hate crime driven by ethnic
hatred and the assumption that the foreign-blooded Gilans knew that the
Pulse was coming. B.C. wants to silence Max and Logan.
When Colberg tries to intervene, he is killed for his troubles, and the
townies lay siege to Max and Logan's cabin. By this point, however, Max's
seizures have gotten worse; she is incapable of helping Logan fend off their
attackers. Logan sets up booby traps and defends their cabin against the
assault with some help from Sage, who flashes back to his childhood memories
of B.C. and his cronies attacking his parents and burning his childhood
home. In a piX5ttched battle, Logan kills their assailants and saves the day.
Max recovers and she and Logan head back to Seattle, having exposed a dark
secret and helping young Sage find some truth in his troubled past.
