As the show opens we see a man in a cell in what appears to be some type of mental institution. Outside the breeding cult is performing a ritual that has to do with the shooting stars in the sky. The man in the cell escapes his cell.

At Terminal City a call is intercepted that a transgenic is loose. Max calls Alec and the two of them along with another X5 rescue the transgenic from the police and bring him to Terminal City.

At Jam Pony Normal joins a citizens' Transgenic Defense League, posting fliers all around town. Alec, meanwhile, starts bringing in more transgenics to work at Jam Pony so they will all be able to have sector passes.

Since Logan’s apartment and all of his Eyes Only stuff has been destroyed Max and Alec are scrounging around in an abandoned lab trying to find anything that might be useful. They uncover a snake that is being kept in a container and Max finds a piece of hardware that might be salvageable. They leave the snake and head out. The escapee from the asylum walks in and takes the snake and wonders how much Max and Alec might know about the breeding cult.

Alec offers to drop off the hardware at Logan’s apartment and Max tells him not to. Alec is curious as to why Max says no and she ends up telling him that she told Logan that they were a couple. Alec is mad at Max since he doesn’t want to get in the middle of her romance. He goes over to Logan’s apartment and finds him wearing the exoskeleton (which he no longer needs since the transfusion with Joshua) and breaking wood. Alec tries to clear things up with Logan but he can’t since Logan will not let him get a word in edgewise. It is apparent he is upset. Alec leaves Logan’s and heads over to Crash where he finds Max. He tells her that he couldn’t tell Logan and that she really should tell him the truth. Alec notices strange markings on Max’s arm and asks her why she is getting tattoos. She says she didn’t and that they just appeared. It appears to relate to the breeding cult.

In the meantime White and his men have discovered a way to find transgenics by scanning for body temperatures over 100 since transgenics have a higher temp. then humans.

Max heads over to Terminal City and shows Logan the marking via the computer uplink between Joshua’s house (Logan’s new residence) and Terminal City. Logan says he will try to decipher them. A call is picked up about another transgenic, the guy who aided Max and Alec earlier, Biggs. But he manages to lose the police yet his picture is all over the television. Before Max or Alec can do anything a new transgenic joins them in Terminal City. It is the man from the asylum he says he is an X series and his name is C.J. Max realizes he is not a real transgenic and the barcode is just painted on. Before they can do anything about C.J. Biggs calls Alec. Alec tells him to return to Terminal City but just as he is saying this a gang of humans see Biggs and Alec can hear a commotion on the other end, he and Max go to look for their friend but by the time they get there he is already dead.

Senator McKinley makes a public statement about the lynching of the transgenic. After the press conference, he chides White for letting someone escape during the Katara ceremony. Max, meanwhile, plans with Alec to hit White's hideout and release all the transgenics. Max asks where C.J. went because she is suspicious that he might be connected to White's cult. All he left behind was a paper bag with a snake inside.

Otto shows up at Jam Pony to question Normal about an ID found on Biggs. Cindy hears this and sneaks into Normal's office to swipe Max and Alec’s files before Otto can see that more transgenics work at Jam Pony. Sketchy confronts O.C. about what she was doing and he sees the names on the folders. Sketchy asks why she took their folders and she says why do you think?

Max finds C.J. and he tells her that he is in hiding from the Familiars. He explains that his father was a doctor who learned that C.J. would not survive the "initiation" . The Familiars locked him up, but he doesn't know what the initiation is really for. Max asks him if he can read the markings on her arm. He says that his father, Sandeman, can read Minoan, and she convinces him to take her to him. As they wait by the waterfront for Sandeman, White shows up. C.J. greets White with the breeding salutation and calls him "brother." He only betrayed Max because White promised that he would be saved. White strings up Max and rips open her shirt. The rune tattoos are all over her chest. White explains that Sandeman was a non-believer who wanted to destroy the Familiars' planning. He created Max to mess with their destiny. White tasers Max and asks about his son. Max ignores the question. White says that it is almost as if her and him are siblings. C.J., who was watching all along, takes the taser and strikes White. He frees Max with the belief that she is the only one who can help him. Max finds the transgenic prisoners and attacks White's men. As Max gets into the truck, C.J. is shot by White. Max escapes with the transgenics.

In the meantime, Alec and Joshua find the guys who killed Biggs and beat them up. Alec warns them that he will kill them if he sees them around again.

At Crash, Cindy admits to Sketchy that Max is indeed a transgenic. Regardless, she knows Max is a good person. Sketchy accepts this, and wonders if he can convince Max to do an exclusive interview with him for the tabloid. Later, over the computer camera, Max explains to Logan that Sandeman is White's father. White's interpretation of her tattoos say that she is the second coming sent to foil his plans. Yet Max doesn't even know what that means.

In the asylum, White reprimands C.J. He says that C.J. had a chance to redeem himself for their family. White vows to find Max.
