  • Thursday Co-op

  • Lighthouse members have the opportunity to participate in our Thursday Co-op, which consists of enrichment classes taught by parents for various age groups, from preschool - high school. Typical age groups are 4-5, 6-8, 9-12, and 13 & up, but some classes may include a wider or narrower range of ages, as decided by the teacher. A nursery provides care for infants - 3 yr olds. Co-op meets on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 - 3:15 for 8 weeks in the fall and another 8 weeks in the winter/spring at a local church. Each week consists of two 1-hour classes with a 15-minute snack break in between. Parents with children in Co-op are required to participate in both hours as a teacher, assistant, monitor, nursery helper, or other position as assigned by the Co-op Coordinator. Sign-ups are held on an afternoon prior to the start of the session, with classes filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Teachers are allowed to sign up their own children first. The classes offered depend upon the interests and abilities of the teachers who volunteer! Past sessions have included classes in art, drama, writing, science, woodworking, cooking, soccer, first aid, knitting, basketmaking, speech, geography, sign language, and much more!

  • Bagging Food

  • Lighthouse members volunteer to bag food at the Food Pantry at Faith Baptist Church in Youngsville on the 2nd Thursday of each month, from 3:00 - 5:00. The Food Pantry operates out of the new garage located at the the front, far right of the church property, next to the brick house. There is now a need for volunteers to bag food on the 4th Thursday of the month. We will be working outside, so dress accordingly. In the event of bad weather, we will move inside the Food Pantry, but space is more limited there.

  • Park Days

  • Park Days are planned periodically at an area park or playground, and can involve either free play or organized games. This is a great opportunity for moms as well as kids to get to know other families in the support group. Each month we'd like a different Park Day Hostess to choose a favorite park or playground and pick a date and time for a park day for Lighthouse families. The Hostess could plan a specific activity, such as jump rope, dodgeball, kite flying, a theme picnic, etc., or simply let the kids do their own thing!

  • Graduation

  • Lighthouse seniors may choose to participate in the Lighthouse Graduation Ceremony in June. All participating parents and students meet throughout the year to plan the ceremony, which includes caps & gowns, a guest speaker, a multi-media presentation, and diplomas awarded to each student by their parents.

  • Yearbook

  • The Lighthouse Yearbook is a wonderful keepsake for your family as well as a tool for educating friends and family about homeschooling life! It serves as a visual record of Lighthouse activities and also other activities our families are involved in. This year, the goal is to have our teens produce the yearbook, with assistance from parent advisors. Students on the Yearbook Staff will have the opportunity to learn and apply skills in photography, copy writing, editing, lay-out, desk-top publishing, graphic design, business, and teamwork. Graduating seniors in Lighthouse each receive their own page in the Yearbook, as do individual Lighthouse families. Lighthouse activities and events such as Co-op, Eagles Sports, Park Days, Geography Bee, Family Picnic, Field Trips, etc, and other activities such as Homeschool Band, Food Pantry, Keepers at Home, Boy Scouts, and UpWards basketball are arranged in sections, with photos, captions, and original artwork. Past Yearbooks have been full-color, soft-cover, and comb-bound; copies are available in the Lighthouse Library for you to look at. A Yearbook Family Page form is included in the back of this handbook. Information for submitting additional photos and also for ordering your yearbook will appear in the newsletter and/or email loop.

  • Field Trips

  • All Lighthouse families are invited to participate in planning field trips for our children. Our Field Trip / Events Coordinator has a list of possible field trips, or you may choose any place that your family would like to visit. Be sure to ask about special group educational programs or tours. Some field trips will be appropriate for particular age groups, and others will accomodate the whole family. Ideally, we would like to have 2 - 3 field trips offered each month.

    FIELD TRIP GUIDELINES

  • Sign up with field trip planner and pay any fees by deadline; write dates, times, meeting place, costs, etc. on your calendar
  • Please adhere to any age restrictions or other requirements made by the destination or planner
  • Call the field trip planner if you cannot come; someone else may be on a waiting list
  • You may still be responsible for the fee if a replacement cannot be found for your spot
  • Supervise your children closely while on any field trip, and coach them on respectful and appropriate behavior. Each of you are representing not only your family and Lighthouse, but all homeschoolers and most importantly, our Lord, Jesus Christ. We WILL leave an impression, whether it be positive or negative! Let's make it positive.
