Parents

  • Monthly Parent Meetings
    • Lighthouse members meet for monthly parent meetings on the 1st Tuesday night of each month ( except July ) at Homelight Books in Wake Forest. From 6:30 - 7:00 P.M. is library / fellowship / general Q&A time. The meeting starts at 7:00 P.M. and generally includes a devotion, sharing time, topic discussion or guest speaker, and brief announcements. All announcements should be sent to the Vice Chairman by the Friday before the meeting to be included on the printed agenda. From 8:30 - 9:00 is library / fellowship / sign-ups / clean-up. Visitors are always welcome to attend our monthly meetings. There is an ADULTS only policy for these meetings, although you may bring infants. Please be ready to step outside of the room if the baby is fussy so as not to distract others in the meeting. Volunteers are needed each month to be greeters, to do devotions, and to help with clean-up. See the newsletter and Lighthouse email for announcements of specific meeting topics and/or guest speakers.

    • Homeschooling in High School
    • A discussion group for those parents homeschooling high schoolers (or those considering the possibility! ) meets on the 1st Saturday morning of each month from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Homelight Books. The purpose of this group is to provide encouragement and to share information and experience. Everyone is welcome.

    • Standardized Testing

    • State law requires that homeschoolers administer an annual standardized test to students age 7 and older. There are a number of testing options available to us: Woodcock-Johnson , Iowa (ITBS), California ( CAT), Stanford (SAT), and PASS are some of the most common tests. Lighthouse members have the opportunity to participate in group Iowa testing, if they so choose. The Iowa Test is administered by parent volunteers over 2 or 3 days in late March or early April. Depending on interest, we will offer testing for grades 1 -12. A volunteer Iowa Testing Coordinator is responsible for reserving classrooms at a church, ordering tests, recruiting administrators and helpers, mailing back the completed tests, and distributing the results. Cost for the test is approximately $30 per child.

    • Library

    • The Lighthouse Library is open for the benefit of our members before and after our monthly parent meetings. It contains a large variety of books, videos, and audio tapes on subjects related to homeschooling, education, parenting and various academic subjects. Your Lighthouse membership card serves as your library card, and items may be checked out for 4 weeks at a time. A portion of each family's membership fee is designated to the library fund and is used to purchase new items, and donations of items are also accepted per the approval of the librarian. Members will be expected to pay the replacement cost of any item that is lost or damaged.

    • Membership Directory
    • Lighthouse Membership Directories will be made available for all Lighthouse families to pick up at our monthly meetings starting in October. These directories include the information you provided on your membership form: name, address, phone number, email address, children's names & ages, church, and curriculum. You will find this valuable for contacting other Lighthouse members in regards to various activities and events.

    • Membership Card
    • You will receive a Lighthouse Membership Card, on which is printed your name, membership number, name of the support group, and year. Keep this in your wallet, because you will need this card to sign up for Co-op and check items out of our library. You can also use your card to receive Educator Discounts at some area businesses such as Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Michael's, etc.

    • Website
    • There is a Lighthouse website that is mainly for the purpose of providing information about our support group to the general public. It was created and is maintained by a homeschooled student. You might like to to share this with grandparents and other family members! http://hometown.aol.com/alexh85/lighthouse

    • Email Loop
    • Lighthouse maintains a moderated e-mail loop on yahoogroups.com for communication between our members. Everyone who lists an e-mail address on their membership form will be sent an e-mail "invitation to join" the Lighthouse_HSA group on Yahoogroups. You must reply to that invitation email in order to be subscribed.

    • Newsletter
    • A monthly newsletter is sent to each Lighthouse family. Members are invited to submit articles, book reviews, ads, testimonies, announcements, and other items of interest. All field trip and activity coordinators should email announcements to the Newsletter Editor prior to the published deadline at least a month in advance, in addition to placing information on the email loop or putting out sign-up sheets at meetings. Remember to include date, time, location, contact person's name and phone number, along with any other pertinent information.
