Alex Mendoza & Associates - Goodwill, Links & Network

An Entertainment Distribution Consulting Firm

Goodwill, Links and Networking

AMA is committed to find, develop and nurture new talent in the Industry, in furthering the knowledge and easy accessibility of information to all involved in the Industry and to improve the communications and representation of Latinos in the Entertainment Industry.

Goodwill and Pro-Bono

Aware of the many challenges faced by first time producers, AMA chooses at least two producers, one of them Latino, to work for them in a pro-bono basis. The producers most demonstrate having an option or ownership in an outstanding story or screenplay, be creative, mature, cooperative, willing to learn and, most importantly, be extremely passionate about their project. They also need to reliably demonstrate the inability to pay for AMA Consulting Services.

Currently, they are:

The Warehouse – Zimmer Productions – Kathy Zimmer, Producer

Half-Caste – Heat Productions – Sebastian Apodaca, Kim te Roller, Producers

Links

Following are AMA’s favorite Internet links categorized and described:

Daily Entertainment News

The Hollywood Reporter & Variety.com: The two are the foremost entertainment dailies, a most read for anyone in the industry. Both have excellent classified (including jobs) ads and extraordinary premium paid subscription sections (searchable news archives, StarPower List, etc.) The HR has an outstanding message board; the Variety has an independents dedicated section.

Entertainment - Reuters: Part of the Yahoo! Site. The most frequently updated news site. Is the site we check more than once a day.

Screendaily: Online daily service of the weekly European based daily trade newsmagazine, Screen International. This is an outstanding source for Independent companies, markets and festivals business news.

indieWIRE: Online news dedicated to the Independent world.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY ONLINE | AOL: Online version of the magazine for AOL users.

[I N S I D E]: Online version of the magazine. Very insightful and comprehensive coverage of issues and news.

LA Times/Business: Business section of the Los Angeles Times.

Weekly Entertainment News

Ain't It Cool News: Irreverent news, articles, reviews and interviews. Most famed “scooper” of breaking news. No much serious business, but lots of fun.

Salon.com Arts & Entertainment: Liberal high-brow (read “intellectual”) takes on the news, insightful and deep coverage of issues.

VideoStore Magazine & Video Business: Video business Magazines, “The Hollywood Reporter” and “Variety” of video.

L.A. Weekly: Weekly magazine with reviews, news and interviews.

WENN: London based online tabloid. Lots of gossip and juice on celebrities. Used by IMDb for their Celebrities News section.

E! Online - News: Online version of E!, for AOL users.

The Sampler: The online entertainment section of Time Magazine.

Calendar Live - Movies & Calendar Live - TV: Movies and TV sections of the Los Angeles Times.

NYT: Arts: Arts section of The New York Times.

Entertainment Databases

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb): The most complete of the film and TV programming databases. Fast search of almost any title or talent imaginable with outstanding in depth info. Probably the most frequented site by us.

All Movie Guide: A very good alternate to the IMDb. It has more complete synopsis on the films.

Hollywood Stock Exchange: A very good barometer of buzz and current popularity of a film or talent. Great fun to play free! We have made a bundle with our Penelope Cruz bonds and expect to do more!

ShowBIZ Data - The Entertainment Search Engine: One of the best (if not the best) business dedicated sites. Requires subscription to the most useful features. One of the best Jobs in the Entertainment Boards! One caveat though, we do not like their Estimated Revenue Forecast feature, competes directly with our services, we believe ours to be better and way more detailed.

Box Office Report: Searchable database of BO gross amounts for a plethora of titles.

Box Office Report - Directors - 50: List of the top 50 directors, rated by BO Report. They will soon also have a Cast List.

Box Office Guru: Another searchable database of BO gross amounts, somewhat cruder than BO Report, but still a good alternate.

Movie Review Query Engine: A Web Search Engine dedicated solely to find movies reviews. Outstanding tool if you want to compare or find many reviews at the same time.

4Filmmakers: Site dedicated to info on Independent films, with a great screenplay sales database.

The Ulmer Scale: Online site for a talent rating publications company. Their cast book is widely used in the Industry; unfortunately you can only access the Top 20 list in their site. You can order the book at this site, but one word of caution: it gets outdated even before being published. But for this industry of uncertainties, it is still a good tool.

BEA--national accounts data: Bureau of Economic Analysis of the US Department of Commerce, bunch of boring economic figures. Even so, you can find a lot of info to support your Business Plan, like… Do you know that Latinos are already now population majority in NY, LA and Miami, three of the top markets?

The CIA WorldFactbook2000: Even when we are in the Entertainment Industry and not in the spy business, this tool has proven very useful to learn more about any country in the world. We have used it for many years anytime that an unusual territory comes up in our licensing agreements. It gives you in depth information of any and all countries of the world. Great to analyze markets!

Guilds, Unions & Organizations

AFMA: The American Film Market Association, the foremost trade organization of Independent filmmakers, sellers, financiers and buyers. It contains database of members. The AFMA organizes the famed American Film Market in Santa Monica, usually Feb-Mar of each year.

MPAA: The Motion Pictures Association of America, the foremost, and most powerful trade organization in our Industry. It represents, defends, advocates for and coordinates the interest of the “seven sisters”, the major studios: Walt Disney Company; Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc.; Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.; Paramount Pictures Corporation; Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp.; Universal Studios, Inc.; and Warner Bros.

AMPAS: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences synonymous with “OSCAR”. Outstanding resource of history, conservatorship, and archives, with a great search engine for all things related to the Academy Awards.

DGA: The Directors Guild of America.

SAG: The Screen Actors Guild.

WGA: The Writers Guild of America.

ASC: The American Society of Cinematographers.

IFP: The Independent Feature Project. Great source of networking, professional resources and seminars for independents filmmakers.

AFI: The American Film Institute. An institute dedicated to the advancement of the art, with conservatorship and educational programs.

IDA: The International Documentary Association. Great resource for anything “documentary”.

Directories

WebMovie.com: Self-proclaimed as the web guide for motion picture producers, is the site from where we have gotten more referrals.

Creative Planet: A very useful, even when incomplete directory of everything relating to entertainment.

la411.com: Online version of the famed production services publication.

Entertainment Job Search

All the major companies and studios maintain Job Recruiting sites in the web, to many to list. Best is to start your job search in the listed below site.

ShowBizJobs.Com: Older and better known but not as easy to use as ShowBIZ Data’s.

Latino Entertainment News

LatinoLA: Everything related to Latinos in the Los Angeles area.

Viva Hollywood.com: Fan oriented site.

Latiknow.com: A general news Latino oriented site with bunches of information on entertainment.

Yahoo! Espectáculos y diversión>Cine: Yahoo! en Español entertainment site.
