Dana's Remember WENN Convention
Report
The
3rd Annual Remember WENN weekend just ended and we all had a wonderful time.
It was great seeing all the people I'd met before and especially wonderful
meeting some of the WENNers I'd never seen!
There
was one major disappointment and concern. I contacted Mary Stout Friday
morning and she told me that she would not be able to meet with us after
all. She was in Ohio visiting her mother who had broken her hip. Of
course we all understood completely. Under the circumstances, her place
is with her mother, not dining with a bunch of fans. Best wishes for
a quick recovery to Mary's mother and of course I hope that we do get to
meet Mary at some point.
So
here is a basic rundown of some of the stuff we did this weekend:
Friday:
I
met up with everyone on Friday night at about 7 in the lobby of the PanAmerican
hotel. Rita's flight was delayed in Chicago and she got there
about
8.
At that point we were all there and we went out for dinner on Friday
night
at
a Chinese restaurant about 3 blocks from the hotel. The food was
excellent
and
the prices were reasonable. I gotta remember about this
place.
The
people who were there for Saturday dinner were me, Emma, Rita, Britt,Suzanne,
Kathleen, Linda, James, Adina and Linda's Mom, Mary. Afterwards
I
drove
Kathleen to the subway because she had to get to a big meeting the next day.
It was great meeting her, even if just briefly! Then I went home
quickly to pick up my
VCR.
When
I got back to the hotel and went up to the party room, Cindy had arrived!
She hooked up the VCR and showed us some wonderful music videos she had done
including a superb one featuring Hilary Booth and all her beautiful gowns!
I
headed out and went home at about midnight, and we determind to meet up in
the hotel lobby again at 10 AM Saturday morning.
Saturday:
We
met up on Saturday morning and went over to a local diner for brunch. Alan
and Julia met up with us afterwards and we headed over to Flushing Meadow
Park, the site of the World's Fair grounds for both the 1939 and 1964 World's
Fairs.
The
1939 World's Fair was the one that World of Tomorrow was about.
The
fairgrounds
were a lot of fun. We took a group picture in front of the
Unisphere,
and we saw the "Panorama of New York" which is a scale model of New
York with every single building and bridge in New York
City. You walk around it on a
walkway. It is really fascinating to look at.
Then
we took a look at the display of World's Fair memorabelia from both fairs.
There
were some gorgeous posters, programs and souveniers. We
saw a poster that we
think is the same one that is in Scott's office. Then
we visited the gift shop and
headed back to the cars.
On
Saturday afternoon, we headed into the city. Britt had left that morning
to
meet
up with Diane and we were supposed to meet up with them later, but
unfortunately
because of a lot of crossed wires and cel phone problems we never did
hook up in the city and didn't see Britt again untiil
we got back to the
hotel
that night. We never did see Diane (Hi Diane, sorry we missed
you!!)
We
started at Times Square where it was, of course, very crowded! But
as
always,
very interesting to look at. We met up with Kerri at the
Marriot
Marquis
hotel which is in Times Square. Then we cut over to 6th Avenue and
ate
some dinner at a very nice restaurant on 6th and 50th
Street called Chez Louis. I had
the barbecued ribs. It was a very nice place.
Good food, and not
terribly
expensive as midtown restaurants go.
Then
we took a stroll down 5th Avenue from 50th to 60th Streets. We
enjoyed
browsing
through Rockefeller Center, St Patrick's Cathedral, and the Plaza
Hotel.
We were planning to stop at FAO Schwartz toystore as well, but we
got
there
about 10 minutes after it closed. Oh well. Kerri left at that point
to
go
back home. Then we took the subway back to Queens and walked back to
the
hotel.
Saturday
night we sat in the party room and watched episodes. We saw
4
episodes,
Strange Bedfellows, Close Quarters, Scott Sherwood of the FBI and The
First Mrs. Bloom. We enjoyed them all, as
always. Cindy headed out after that to drive
back home to New Jersey. It was after 1AM when
we finally broke up and went to
sleep. We decided to meet at 9AM in the lobby the
next morning.
Sunday:
We
waited in the lobby until Alan, Julia and Alan's and my friend Marty arrived
and
we could drive out to Long Island in two cars. Linda,
James and Linda's mom had
to head out, as they had a long drive to Providence
ahead of them. So we said
goodbye to them and headed to Long Island. We
went to the 56th Fighter Group restaurant,
an excellent World War II themed restaurant out near
Republic Airport, a small private
plane airport. There is a WWII plane museum next
to it as well.
We
had the breakfast buffet and afterwards walked around looking at some of
the
planes before we went back to the cars. On the way
back to Queens we stopped at
"Young's Farm" a fruit and vegatable farm stand that has
fresh produce in one half
and fresh baked goods and crafts in the other. It's
a very nice place that I try to get out to
at least once or twice each summer. I came home
with strawberries, tomatoes,
lemon bars, shortcakes, and two kinds of bread,
lemon bread and bananna bread. Well, I'll
be eating nicely this week!!
Once
we got back to Queens, Suzanne needed to go the airport and Adina needed
to
be picked up by cab at the hotel, so we made sure they
got to their
respective
destinations. At that point, it was just Britt, Emma, Rita,
Alan
and
me (and Julia) left, and Britt had two hours to get to the airport. So
we
decided
to go over to Eddie's Sweet Shoppe for ice creams. Good decision!
It
took
just the right amount of time and was a lot of fun! Afterwards, Emma
and
Rita
stayed over at the hotel until Monday morning, and Alan, Julia and I
drove
Britt
to the airport for her own flight home. A very successful weekend was
at
a
close!
I
loved doing this in New York. We all had a great time, and I hope I
can see
everyone
again at some point. I'm also sure everyone else's perspective is
not
exactly
the same as mine and I'd love to read some other accounts of the
weekend
as well.
Hope
everyone got home safe and sound and the flights and drives weren't
too
hideous.
Best wishes to all!!
