No one likes to have their feelings hurt intentionally or accidentlly. Therefore, we
should always be careful what we say around others that may be offensive to
someone. God does not want us to hurt any of the people he has created.
People today do not realize how piercing words can be. The power of the tongue is
very powerful. In James 3:5, the Bible says: "Likewise the tongue is a small part of
the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a
small spark." What you say someone may not mean anything to you, but they take a
great deal from it and it end up being hurtful to them. In James 3:6, it continues to
say: "The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts
the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by
hell." One simple remark that you make to someone or about someone could have a
tremendous effect on their life.
You can also get yourself into trouble if you do not watch what you say. God
warns us of this in Proverbs 21:23; "He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps
himself from calamity." There are many circumstances when you could cause
something bad to happen by saying something inappropriate. But, if you will watch
what you say, one should be able to avoid these types of situations. Proverbs 13:3
also deals with this: "He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly
will come to ruin."
Here are several rules that may help you to keep from saying anything mean to or
about someone:
1. Never tell jokes that slander.
2. Never criticize unless you have already expressed your dissapointment with the
other person in private, have already taken someone with you to discuss the grievance
with the person, and are absolutely convinced that public reprimand is necessary and
will be helpful.
3. Never say anything about someone in their absence that you wouldn't say in
their presence.
Often times, we do not realize the effect that we have on people. We have an
effect, though it may be small, on the life of everyone that we speak to. Words can go
a long way with people, let's all try to make sure that the words we say to people are
kind words instead of hurtful words. You never know, something you say could be the
difference between someone giving their life to Christ or dying and going to Hell.
