Zonker, Jack Russell Terrier, 6-10-86 till 5-12-00

All About Zonker

He was the runt of his litter, but displayed all the traits that Jack Russells are known for. I am personally proud of the fact that we owned this breed long before they were popularized by any movie or TV show.

While he only topped the scales at 12 pounds, Zonker personally kept our property free of vermin regardless of it's size or aggressiveness. I personally remember one evening where we were dressed for a formal dinner party. We put the dogs out for their last run, and Zonker cornered a huge groundhog under our gardening shed. Half an hour later, Zonker had prevailed, the groundhog was dead and my husband was now covered in dirt and blood. Please remember if you are considering owning a Jack Russell, this is what these little guys are bred for -- their huge hearts and strong bodies.

This picture was taken only a couple of months before Zonk passed away. The years of battles really took a tool on his muzzle and he looks his age here, but what a guy!

My Pet's Favorite Activities

Zonker loved to lie in the sun on our deck overlooking our yard with our other animals. He would chase tennis balls for hours. My husband couldn't practice with his soccer ball on our property; Zonker would exhaust himself attempting to gain control of the ball!

One Funny Story

We have an Invisible Fence System which has worked very well with all our Jack Russell's and other dogs. However, one hot sunny afternoon, Zonker had had ENOUGH of the UPS man. After the UPS man had made a delivery to our home, Zonker decided that the territorial invasion was too much for him to bear, and he took the 'shock' and went after the UPS truck. We live in a rural area, and the homes are far apart -- but the driver conveyed to us (while laughing)the next day, that at each stop (about a half mile apart) Zonker would catch up with him. This went on for several miles until we caught up with "Z" in our car -- please keep in mind that his little legs were only a couple of inches long!
