2008

APANY'S CHINESE NEW YEAR DINNER: February 9, 2008 at the Heavenly Bamboo Restaurant. APANY's first event of the new year was the celebration of the Chinese Spring Festival, or New Year. This year is the Year of the Rat, and the year 4706. 29 guests showed up to enjoy a sumptuous Chinese Banquet. Before dinner we were given peanuts and sushi while we waited for the quests to arrive. Dinner began with an appetizer plate of 4 cold dishes. After that the entrees kept coming with meats, vegetables, noodles, and fish. A special Chinese dessert of rice balls in syrup soup was prepared for us. Sodas were provided. After dinner Paul gave a speech about the history and customs of Chinese New Year. This was followed by a raffle so that everyone was a winner. Unfortunately, 37 guests were suppose to come to dinner but 8 guests did not show up or cancel. As a result, APANY had to pay for those no show diners. As a result APANY will have to reconsider having this type of arrangement in the future.

APANY'S HOLIDAY SEASON GET-TOGETHER: December 8, 2007 at the LGBT Community Center.  This was APANY's final event for 2007. Twenty guests showed up to celebrate the the holiday season with new and old friends. With holiday decorations and music, we enjoyed socializing and eating from our international holiday desserts table. We enjoyed Chinese roll cakes, Italian struffoli, middle eastern rugala, and other cakes and pies. 13 guests participated in the holiday grab bag. We also got to look at many of Ed Remo's photos from past years. We would like to thank Ray J. of LYC NJ for providing the party music. As usual, thanks to the party committee for getting it all together.

APANY's THANKSGIVING PARTY: November 17, 2007, at Dr. Charles's Penthouse apartment. The cool weather didn't stop some 60 people from coming to our annual Thanksgiving Party. It was a time when we saw old friends and met new friends. The party was co-hosted with the Mandarin Connection group. The door opened at 7:00 PM to a beautifully set table of cheeses, chips and dips, vegetable tray, nuts, and a beautiful cooked turkey and ham center piece. After an hour or so of mingling with friends, dinner was served. The main course was the traditional turkey and stuffing, gravy, ham and applesauce, green bean casserole, whipped candied yams, macaroni salad, coleslaw, four bean salad, and rolls. Everything was delicious. After dinner we served pumpkin, apple and pecan pies and the traditional APANY cake. Soft drinks were provided. Kudos to Dr Charles for the use of his lovely penthouse apartment. Thanks to Raymond Chen for all his help with coordinating the event and greeting the people at the door. More thanks to the APANY planning committee, John Cossen, B.J. Toner, Edwin Yangga and Paul Pocaro for all the work they put into making this party a success.

Ed Remo Memorial, Saturday, Sept, 23, 2007 at the LGBT Community Center, NYC. A memorial for APANY's beloved leader, Ed Remo, was very emotional for the 100 or so people who came to show their love and support for Ed. Not only were many members of the gay community there, but several Remolador family members were in attendance as well. There were several speakers sharing their memories of Ed, as well as performers dedicating their performances to the memory of Ed Remo. Speakers included the Rev. Robert W. Gunn and Rev Don Becker, APANY members Paul Pocaro, Dr. David Cheng (also sang a song), Desiree the First (Miss APANY 1997/98), Rick Burrill, & BJ Toner, who not only spoke of few words of his memories of Ed, but read a beautiful poem written by Franky Wang, who was unable to attend. Among the performers were Robbie and Izza (Mr. and Miss APANY 2002), who performed a beautiful duet. Jefferson DeJesus and Ann Trinidad sang beautifully with piano(Janet Mui) and violin(Rex Gayas) accompaniment. Dawn (Miss APANY 2006) also performed. Paul Pocaro, not only did a masterful job of hosting the Memorial, but he was the pianist accompanying the beautiful voice of Edwin Yangga, who sang an original song which was written by Paul Pocaro. Ed Remo's nieces, Jocelyn Wise (who flew in from California to perform at the Memorial) and Rose Hilario performed beautiful Tahitian/Hawaiian dances. The highlight of the Memorial seemed to be a very emotional photo slide show, produced by BJ Toner with musical back-up produced by Edwin Yangga, which brought many people to tears. This slide show featured Ed Remo, not only in 10 years of APANY photos, but many, many personal family photos of Ed as a handsome young man in the Philippines and his early years in the United States. We saw Ed as we have never seen him before. Several of Ed's paintings were on display, courtesy of the Remolador family. Ed was an accomplished painter, which few of us knew about previously. Refreshments were served after the memorial and people mingled and reminisced about Ed Remo. Thank you to the Ed Remo Memorial Committee, consisting of Paul Pocaro, Edwin Yangga, John Cossen, BJ Toner, and (niece) Rose Hilario. Special thanks to Robert Woodworth and the staff at the LGBT Community Center for helping make this Memorial to Ed Remo the success that it was.

2006

NYC Pride Day Parade: June 25, Sun, 11am-3pm --  We thank everyone who participated with APANY in the 37th Pride Parade: APANY's 9th year of Pride (with its 9th mini-float carrying the 9th APANY King and Queen) went smooth sailing, despite the heavy showers at the start of the Parade noontime. Our contingent was small but vibrant and enthusiastic. Our theme this year was Golden East: A Tribute to the Middle East. The mini-float throne was decked in gold, and our King and Queen, Clarione and Abbygail (Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2006) were shimmering in skimpy, sexy gold-coined attire. Alternate Queen Michelle (Ms. Tropic Islands 2006) was also radiant. Cheers to our dazzling and tireless belly dancers Za-sha (Ms. Pearl of the Orient 2005) and Aishwarya (Ms. South Seas 2006), who swiveled their hips and wowed the crowd from beginning to end of the March. The APANY Pride Team: Marshals: David S and Al Swadi; Float Chauffeur: BJ T; Marchers: Tom K, Paul P, Ed R, David S, Al S, Dan (Mr. East-West 2006); Volunteer Float Assembly and Decorators: Tom K, BJ, Ed, Clarione, Yazmin (Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2006), Shane (Coffee). It was a fun, exciting, proud day!
[The rain, in fact, was a refreshing, welcome relief after the dark, ugly clouds the GAPIMNY group cast over APANY with its mean-spirited attempt to prevent APANY from marching permanently at the Parade by portraying the APANY contingent as creepy, sexual predators. The Pride is about diversity and unity, not hate and divisiveness]

11th Annual Picnic at Liberty State Park (APANY-LYCNJ): June 10, Sat, 9am-5pm -- Eleven years now, would you believe it? The sun was out, but it was cold and windy at the picnic area. However, the buffet food table and the grand BBQ tradition (burger patties, franks, sausages, pork) went on all day, while the close to 50 attendees munched in some warm area, with the spectacular view of Manhattan skyline. Still great food and friendship. Thanks to John C for securing the picnic tables and to Tom K for the specially-made BBQ grill.

APANY's 10th Anniversary Gala and Asian-Pacific Heritage Month Celebration: May 27, Sat, 7:30-10:30pm, Rm 101 --  It was a beautiful spring day, and although it was a Memorial Day holiday weekend, more than 70 people attended and celebrated APANY's momentous first decade of fun, friendship, diversity and cultural adventures. Amid festive decorations, the jubilant crowd feasted on tasty finger food and hot and cold buffet. Birthday Boys Edwin, David, Thomas, Kurt and Robert blew out the cake candles. Clarione and Abbygail, newly-crowned Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2006, were formally introduced to the crowd, as well as some of the Royal Court 2006: Dawn (Ms. Pearl of the Orient), Michelle (Ms. Tropic Islands), Adriana (Ms. East-West), and Daniel (Mr. East-West). Dynamic performances were provided by: Pukie Pop Dolls (featuring Jackie, Ms. APANY '04, Jing Ms. APANY '05, and their friends); Jose and Jing (Mr. & Miss APANY '05); Yazmin (Ms. APANY '00), Za-sha Lamar (Ms. Pearl-Orient '05); Balladeer Jefferson and Broadway Ann. Thanks to all the volunteers: John, BJ, David S, Paul B, Tom K, Ed and Leslie. Thanks also to our sound engineer Tom K, food coordinator David S, BJ for the Pageant 2006 photo-slide display (photos by Jerry Me, John C, Julio, BJ), and to Yazmin for the additional 10th Anniversary cake. Cheers! Here's to 10 more years.

The Ninth Annual
MR. & MISS ASIAN PACIFIC ALLIANCE PAGEANT 2006
was held on MARCH 25, 2006

Dear Pageant 2006 Participants:

Due to time constraint, it was impossible for me to thank everyone who made this 9th year of the Pageant another memorable, successful one. So Here's My Heartfelt Thanks To You All: Hard-Working and Still Cheerful Volunteers, Talented and Fabulous Performers, Delightful and Bright Hosts, Distinguished Judges, Wonderful Sponsors and Supporters, and best of all, to our bunch of Dynamic, Gorgeous, and Intelligent Candidates. (See List below. I hope I didn't miss anyone, but do remind me if I did.)

With a record 12 candidates this year (we had 8 last year), it was a nerve-wracking evening as the biggest concern was to have the Pageant finished on time (11 p.m.). Despite some technical problems at the beginning, we did manage to finish on the dot, thanks largely to the effort of our skilled Stage Managers, Paul and Edwin, and our Stage Crew (Sandy, BJ, David, Tony) who kept things going smoothly backstage and on stage. Great job also on the part of our adorable, engaging and sharp hosts Jose, Daniel and Jackie, who all kept the right pace without sacrificing the charm, humor and human aspects of the grand evening.

WINTER WHITE PARTY: JAN 25, 2003, 7:30-10PM, THE CENTER AUDITORIUM 301   APANY got another lucky break from more days of bitter cold, when the mercury climbed up to the low 30’s for the weekend and allowed more than 30 (more than we expected) spirited, cheery people to drift in and celebrate APANY’s first event of the New Year 2003. It was a pleasant evening of camaraderie amid yummy munchies, drinks, and beautiful music, with some people even sharing photo albums for fun viewing and conversation. Birthday Boys Steven (12/15) and Irwin (1/17) blew out the cake candles. Thanks to volunteers John, Tom, Paul B, Gary, Alan and Ed.

HOLIDAY SEASON EXTRAVAGANZA: DEC 21, 2002, 7:30-10:30PM, THE CENTER AUDITORIUM 301 With the city transit strike averted, a perfect autumn-like weather, and a party room turned into a holiday wonderland, APANY’s year-ending festivity (celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa) was attended with more than 60 festive guests, who enjoyed great food, drinks, and splendid musical performances provided by Robert and Izza (Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2002), Jay (Mr. Asian Pacific Alliance 2001), Daniel and Priscilla (Mr. & Miss Pearl of the Orient 2002), Joe, Edwin (former Entertainer of the Year), and Paul P (on the piano), who also lead the Christmas caroling. Birthday Boys David (12/12), Sandy (12/17), and Neil (12/21) blew out the Holiday cake candles. Robert and Izza then hosted the free raffles of many lovely holiday presents, with everyone receiving gifts. Many thanks to the people who donated raffle gifts: Allan, Kurt, Jonathan and Gene, Sandy, Irwin, John C, and Ed. Thanks also to Paul B, Jonathan and Gene for donating some of the food.

THANKSGIVING POTLUCK DINNER: NOV 16, 2002, 7:00-11:00PM, JERRY LEPP’S LOFT, BROOKLYN HEIGHTSIt’s about giving, thanking and loving. Despite rain (which got nasty into the night), 60 people came out and celebrated APANY’s autumn holiday. Just like the Thanksgiving cornucopia, delicious food (hot dish, salad, dessert, munchies, etc.) just kept flowing as guests kept coming in. By the end of the evening, there were still so much food and drinks. Many thanks to everyone who brought all the scrumptious food and drinks, and also to those who made donations. Special thanks to Jerry Lepp for his terrific hosting and for the delectable turkey he prepared. Thanks to those who stayed and helped with the clean up.

FIESTA FILIPINO 2002: OCT 26, 2002, 7:30-10:30PM, THE CENTER AUDITORIUM 301About 50 people attended the seventh annual Fiesta Filipino 2002 (postponed from July 20 because of a Con Ed explosion in the area). The guests feasted on such delicacies as pork menudo, chicken asado, Filipino-style spaghetti, cheese puto, leche flan and pan de sal. It was a night of beautiful Filipino music. Save for the “Endless Love” duet by Izza and Robert (Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2002), the evening’s entertainment was a concert of live singing and piano playing of Filipino music, with all the performers attired in the traditional “barong” shirt and other native Filipino outfit: vocal solo by Ed; vocal solo by Ann with piano accompaniment by Jefferson; 2 vocal solos by Izza; vocal duet by Edwin and Jefferson (members of NYC Gay Men’s Chorus); vocal solo by Edwin with piano accompaniment by Paul; and a piano solo by Paul. Birthday boys Daniel, Paul B, Paul P, Ed, John and Ray, blew out the Fiesta candles on the cake: Many adorable native items from the Philippines (such as jewelry boxes, coasters, mail holder, miniature coconut trees, refrigerator magnets, etc.) were raffled off. Thanks to Bob and Ray (co-chairs of Long Yong Club-NJ) for the raffle prizes. Thanks to Paul B and to Eugene, Jonathan and Fred for the additional food. Thanks to all the volunteers: John, Ed, Paul B, Paul P, Edwin, Charles, Bong, Gary, Alan, and many more. Special thanks to all our wonderfully talented entertainers.

POLYNESIAN NIGHT / LEI DAY: SEPT 22, 2002, SUN, 6-9:00PM, THE CENTER AUDITORIUM 301Originally scheduled for Oct. 26, APANYs annual tribute to the South Seas Islands was moved to a this date to give way to the Fiesta Filipino 2002 (cancelled July 20 due to a Con Ed explosion that caused power failure and subway interruption). Because it was a Sunday evening event (the only day available for some of the heavily booked facilities at The Center) the event attracted about twenty people, less than the usual crowd the event gets. Those who attended still enjoyed some nice time together, munching on delicious finger food that included assorted meat buns and fried bananas. Best of all, the entertainers – garbed in exotic island attire – still gave dynamic performances, like the real pros that they are: APANY kings Jay and Robert (Mr. Asian Pacific Alliance 2001 and 2002) did a bouncy duet (music and lyrics by Jay); Izza (Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2002) did a hula dance to Hawaiian music medley; and Priscilla (Miss Pearl of the Orient 2002) did her own cute number to the sound of the Copacabana song. Before the show, Birthday boys Mr. APA Robert (9/18) and Burt (9/18) blew out the candles on the cake. Thanks to our volunteers, John C, Ed R, Paul B, Gary R, and to those who helped out at the end. Big thanks go also to our wonderful performers.

ATLANTIC CITY BEACH PICNIC & TOUR: SEPT 7, 2002, 9AM-8PM, NEW JERSEYIt was the first day of Rosh Hashanah, and the sun finally smiled on a beautiful summer day – perfect for a day at the beach. Twenty people showed up for APANY’s first Atlantic City Beach Picnic and Tour (the 1996 Trip to Atlantic City was more of a casino jaunt). The beach site for APANY was not crowded, and just across The Ritz condo, where the Hospitality Room (used for changing, resting, shower) was located. At the beach, people enjoyed some pasta, shrimp cocktail, pork buns, assorted pastries, and cold drinks; some also enjoyed the beautiful, calm waters. Later, it was off to the condo for some dessert, cold drinks, chitchats, and relaxing; some spent some dips in the pool and hot tub. After some unwinding at the Hospitality Room, it was time for the boardwalk tour along the casino row: visiting the quaint little shops, watching volleyball hunks, gambling and dining.

FIRE ISLAND ESCAPADE: ASIAN INVASION 2002: AUG 29, 2002, SAT,
9AM-4:00PM, CHERRY GROVE, LONG ISLAND
Because of a bad weather forecast, APANY’s Fire Island Asian Invasion 2002 was moved from Aug. 24 to the next Saturday. The rain date was a mixture of sun and cloud, with chill and strong winds on the beach. Still, a few brave souls managed to show up for some Fire Island adventure – visiting the Pines, the forest, the little shops, and some fine, inexpensive outdoor dining at the Grove Italian restaurant. (APANY’s official sunset dinner spot, Michael’s restaurant by the pier, burned down last year and is still in ashes.) The rest of the Labor Day weekend turned out to be totally drenched (think about those planned picnics and BBQs everywhere). Still, there was hope for another beautiful beach day for APANY… (see Atlantic City Journal, Sept  7).

FIESTA FILIPINO, JULY 20, 2002: SAT, 7:30PM-11:00PM, THE CENTER-301This event was cancelled due to a Con Ed plant explosion on 14th Street earlier that afternoon. The fire (no one was hurt) caused electrical failure and subway interruption in West Village, which prompted The Center to close its facilities the rest of the day. It is being rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26.

NYC CITY PRIDE DAY: JUNE 30, 2002, SUN, 9:00AM / 4:00PM, 53RD ST / 5TH AVE / THE VILLAGE  —  Robert and Izza, Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2002, reigned supreme at Heritage of Pride’s 32nd Pride Day Parade and Festival. They are the sexiest Asian Pride King and Queen so far, judging from what they were wearing. Hundreds of thousands of spectators cheered from 52nd St., along 5th Avenue, all to the way to the Village. The group’s theme this year was “Golden Palace.” Both Robert and Izza were in gold outfits, with Robert in skimpy Thai god-inspired costume; Izza created her original royal costume. Priscilla (Ms. Pearl of the Orient) also delighted the crowd dressed in her award-winning Miss Cambodia Spider Woman costume. Many thanks to all the volunteers and participants: David K and Bill G (marshals), Ed R, Paul B, Paul P, Mark S, Allan, Empress of Pegasus, Jay (Mr. Asian Pacific Alliance 2001), Jerry (Priscilla), and Joe (chauffeur), and of course to the APANY King and Queen: Robert and Izza. Special thanks to Joe for his overall help with the loading and unloading.

ASIAN PACIFIC PRIDE NIGHT: MAY 18, 2002, SAT, 7:30-10:30PM, THE CENTER-RM 310More than 30 people attended this event celebrating the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month of May. Amid the usual snacks, refreshments and camaraderie, APANY paid tribute to accomplished Asians/Pacific Islanders and Asian-Americans by displaying their photos and text on the wall, making the room look like an art gallery. Some of those honored: Athletes Michelle Kwan, Greg Louganis and Apolo Anton Ohno; actors B.D. Wong, Lea Salonga and Miyoshi Umeki; beauty queens Angela Perez Baraquio (Miss America 2001) and Brook Mahealanie Lee (Miss Universe 1997); and Councilman John Liu. Bong won first prize for his tribute to Carlos Bulosan (1911-1956), a Filipino immigrant who was a radical labor organizer, editor and writer of poetry, short story and essays. Richard was runner-up with his work on an upcoming Korean-American figure skater. Both were awarded prizes. Guests munched on delicious finger food such as pork buns, ham and cheese buns, hot dog buns, pasta primavera, carrot and dip, cheese and strawberries. Birthday boys Richard (4/12) and Thomas (5/4) blew out the candles on the cake. Thanks to Jerry (Miss Pearl of the Orient 2002), who works as a chef, for his pasta primavera. Thanks to the volunteers John, Ed, Chris and Paul B.

APANY’s SIXTH ANNIVERSARY GALA: APRIL 20, 2002, SAT, 7:30-10:30PM, THE CENTER-RM 310More than 50 people attended APANY’s sixth year of fun, friendship and cultural journeys. Buffet food, non-alcoholic beverages and anniversary cake were served. Birthday boys Clifford (4/8), Bill (4/21) and Edwin (5/18) blew out the candles. The evening was highlighted by the fabulous performances by Robert and Izza (Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2002), who both sang; Daniel and Priscilla (Mr. & Miss Pearl of the Orient 2002), who each did a song and musical act respectively; and Melody (Miss Friendship 2002), who, along with her two backup dancers, performed a Vietnamese dance number. Many thanks to Joe for his lasagna dish, Paul B for the brown rice, John for the ravioli and Ed for the menudo. Thanks also to Rick for the dozen roses (two for each year) and to the volunteers John, Ed, Alan, Paul B, Henry, Winn, Metter and Jim.

The menu: pork  buns, chicken and egg salad sandwich spreads, ham, assorted cookies, cucumber and carrot with dips, lime green Jell-O with pineapple, and the Jade East cake.  Izza (Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2002) and Daniel (Mr. Pearl of the Orient 2002) each performed a fabulous number. Dr. David won the Best in Green prize for the second year in a row.  He won a green Easter basket of goodies. Birthday boy Jacques (3/24) blew out the cake’s candle. Thanks to the volunteers John, Ed, Alan, Gianni, Sean (who did the exquisite stage design), and Joe and Jerry (who picked up the rest of the food).

LUNAR NEW YEAR / VALENTINE CELEBRATIONS: FEB 16, 2002, SAT, 7:30-10:30PM, THE CENTER-AUDITORIUM 301For the first time, APANY combined the Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse 4700) and Valentine’s (Day of Hearts) for a Red Day celebration. Close to 70 people attended this event, with a hot buffet that included Chinese food (chicken wings, mei fun, roast pork with mixed vegetables), lasagna, drinks, cake and red décor all over. The evening was highlighted by the presentation of and musical performances by the new winners from the Pageant 2002, held Jan. 5. Robert and Izza (Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2002), used their own magnetic voices rendering beautiful songs.  Priscilla (Miss Pearl of the Orient 2002) and Melody (Miss Friendship 2002) also dazzled the crowd with their performances. Birthday guys Philip (3/14) and Jerry/Priscilla (2/18) blew out the cake candles. Priscilla also won the Best in Red prize. Our thanks to Paul B, Philip O and Joe N for the additional food. Thanks to all the volunteers John, Paul B, Henry and Jak. Especial thanks to Jay (Mr. Asian Pacific Alliance 2001) for his double duty of being at the admission (with Jakob) and the sound system operator.

MR. & MISS ASIAN PACIFIC ALLIANCE 2002 PAGEANT: JAN 5, 2002, SAT, 7:30PM, PS 41 AUDITORIUMAPANY’s fifth annual Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance Pageant was one spectacular, fabulous evening to remember. It’s APANY’s glitziest night, where so many handsome men, stunningly-gorgeous “women” and talented performers in their exquisite, fabulous and sexy attire gather in one room, in one evening, just like the Oscars. The winners: Robert (Mr. Tahiti) and Asunta Izza de Rossi (Miss Philippines), Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2002. Their royal court: Daniel and Priscilla (Mr. & Miss Pearl of the Orient), Tom and Sunny Delight (Mr. & Miss Friendship), and Richard and Melody (Mr. & Miss Friendship). Robert, a Latin American, becomes the first non-Asian to win the crown – and at 24, the youngest (and the tallest) winner. Izza continues the streak of Filipina beauties to wear the  ladies’ crown (no Filipino has won the men’s crown). Priscilla (aka Jerry) becomes the first ever to capture both the Mr. and Miss Pearl of the Orient crowns (2001 and 2002). The candidates were judged in national costumes, leisure (ie, sexy) wear, formal wear and interview. This year, a special category was added: Mr. & Miss Photogenic, which was judged by the videographer and three photographers of the evening, and was not included in the overall scores for the Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance titles. Also for the first time, the runners-up and the winners were announced first before the special awards to allow more suspense in announcing the winners – who would have been otherwise already predicted with the announcement of special awards beforehand. Another change was the category of Best in Leisure Wear (formerly Swimsuit): this permits the candidates the option of wearing other sexy/skimpy outfits (eg, underwear, lingerie, sportswear). Another first this year: a candidate (Mr. Malaysia) actually requested for an interpreter.

FIESTA FILIPINO 2002: OCT 26, 2002, SATURDAY, 7:30-10:30PM -  About 50 people attended the seventh annual Fiesta Filipino 2002 (postponed from July 20). The guests feasted on such delicacies as pork menudo, chicken asado, Filipino spaghetti, cheese puto, leche plan and pan de sal. It was a night of beautiful music. Save for the "Endless Love" duet by Izza and Robert (Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2002), the evening's entertainment was a concert of live singing and piano playing of Filipino music: vocal solo by Ed; vocal solo by Ann, with piano accompaniment by Jefferson; 2 vocal solos by Izza; vocal duet by Edwin and Jefferson (members of NYC Gay Men's Chorus); vocal solo by Edwin, with piano accompaniment by Paul; and a piano solo by Paul. SEVENTH ANNUAL LIBERTY STATE PARK PICNIC:JUNE 15, 2002, SAT, 9AM-7:00PM, JERSEY CITY, NJ —  Close to 60 people from APANY and LYC-NJ attended the seventh annual outdoor Pride picnic.  It was cloudy, but no drop of rain, and  the day’s merriment went on: great cookout (assorted sausages, hot dogs, burgers, fish, etc.), volleyball playing and pleasant camaraderie. It was an all-day eating, drinking (non-alcohol), playing and delightful chitchats. As in the past, many people brought really scrumptious food: (adobo, pathai, spring rolls, devil’s egg, fried chicken, fruits – just to name a few). Thanks once again to the early-bird John C., who saved all those tables for the group. Thanks also to Michael C. for brining all those ice, drinks and burgers, to Ken M. of the Rainbow Volleyball group for coordinating the Volleyball, and to Jay for the boom box and music.

ASIAN DINNER / ASIAN MOVIE: JUNE 16, 2002, SAT, 5:00PM / 8:00PM, SAMMY’S NOODLE SHOP & GRILL / THE NEW SCHOOL —  Sixteen people attended the dinner at Sammy’s; then it was off to view the film Lan Yu (China/Hong Kong), which was the closing night feature at the annual Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, and for which APANY was the community sponsor. The controversial film – a gay love story in Beijing between a college student and a rich businessman – was sold out. Afterwards, a Gala Party was held at the majestic B Bar and Grill at Fourth Street and Bowery (open bar). This is the third straight year that APANY was honored as a community sponsor of an Asian film at the annual New York Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. In 2000, it was the film Pusong Mamon / Soft Hearts (Philippines); while in 2001, it was Ye Ben / Fleeing the Night (China).

TERRACE PARTY AT JAY-ALLAN'S HOME: AUG 4, 2001, SAT, 6-10:30PM, HOBOKEN, NJ — Sponsored by APANY and LYC-NJ, over forty of their members and some friends attended this unique al fresco dinner party on the spacious terrace at the home of Jay (reigning Mr. Asian Pacific Alliance) and partner Allan, who also celebrated his birthday. The potluck event could have been called International Food Festival as attendees brought an assortment of scrumptious gourmet food: American, Italian, French, Indonesian, Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian, Filipino and Peruvian – just to name a few – plus lots of fresh fruits and assorted drinks (soda, wine, beer, punch). There were desserts galore, and birthday boy Allan blew the candles on his birthday cakes. As with most of APANY's outdoor events, nature cooperated when the dark, cloudy skies cleared up during the evening. Our sincerest thanks to the ever so wonderful hosts Jay and Allan and to everyone who not only came and brought all those wonderful food and drinks, but also were fun company.

The big room (Auditorium 301) where APANY used to hold most of its big events seems bigger and brighter now; that evening it was brightly and festively decorated with pennants, streamers and stage lights in Philippine flag colors of red, white, blue and yellow. Thanks to our regular APANY volunteer staff: John, Paul B, Henry, Ed, Gary, Alan and others who helped as well: Paul P, Edwin, Cezar, Stephen, Mitch, Bong, Charlie, etc. Thanks to Mario and Keith, Paul B and Jay for the additional food. NYC PRIDE DAY PARADE: JUNE 24, 2001, SUN, 5TH AVE/52 ST-THE VILLAGE  — What a horrible rainy day Saturday, but Sunday was simply a bright  day –  perfect  day to for the 32nd annual Gay Pride Parade to celebrate diversity and tolerance. About twenty-five very energetic paraders, mostly attired in API costumes such as sarongs, joined the APANY contingent down Fifth Avenue (52nd  St. to West Village), marching in the People of Color section for the fourth straight year. On the float's traditional golden throne, Jay and Vina, Mr. & Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2001, looked fabulous decked in this year's theme of Rainforest Splendor. Jay in his skimpy feathered jungle outfit, and Vina in her cool and elegant slip-on golden gown with tiara. Both were effervescent and got the crowd cheering loudly throughout. APANY stepped off at 12:30 pm and made it to the end at Greenwich Village at around 3 pm. Later, the marchers sauntered onto the street fair,  the dance, or Pegasus Lounge for some partying. PRIDE FUNDRAISING EVENT AND RAFFLE: JUNE 17, 2001, SUN, 6:30-10PM, PEGASUS LOUNGE, NYC  — The After-Rally Fundraising event at Pegasus on Sunday raised $405 for APANY & GAPIMNY to help defray the cost of the two groups' Pride Day Parade expenses. Not bad for a Sunday evening. The money generated was from $10 donation for Open-Bar (6:30pm-7:30pm) and raffle tickets ($5-$10) sold for a new Dunlop bicycle. Roger Caseres of LYC-NJ & APANY walked around all night selling the raffle tickets. He was also hoping he'd win so he could give the bike to his "little brother" in the "Big Brother" program. As fate would have it, when the winning ticket was announced after 10 pm during the Karaoke Night, Roger did win. Everyone shed tears of joy for Roger. Congrats, Roger, and thanks for your help to raise funds for the two groups. Many thanks to Michael (Yen) Ng, Pegasus proprietor, for his generosity. Ed Remo, APANY chair, was on hand to receive the money for the two groups.

There were many more familiar faces at the theater. For the second year, APANY was co-sponsor of an Asian film at the 13th Annual New York Lesbian & Gay Film Festival. Mountain Creek is beautifully situated in the serene and scenic mountain landscape of Vernon, NJ, only 47 miles from Manhattan! Thanks to Allan and Jay, Pete, and John Rack for the car pool. Thanks to trip coordinators Reuel and Steve and other attendees: Ed, Wu, Quing, Dennis, Julio, Philip, Paul and Edwin. CHINESE LUNAR NEW YEAR 4699: YEAR OF THE SNAKE, JAN 20, 2001, SAT, 7:30-10:30PM, THE CENTERXinnian Kuaile or Gung Hay Fat Choy! – They mean Happy New Year in Chinese Mandarin and Cantonese. Here's to happiness, wealth and longevity!!! APANY's first event of the new millennium and year 2001 was greeted loudly. Despite forecast of 8 inches of snow that afternoon, close to 50 people unexpectedly showed up in what turned out to be one of APANY's fun events. (Snow started trickling at midnight.) Even though the activities were divided and held in two smaller rooms (dining room and entertainment room), and the absence of a real sound system, everyone managed to enjoy the eating and drinking, the camaraderie and the short, but wonderful and comical entertainment provided by Sofia (Miss Pearl of the Orient 2001), Jay (Mr. Asian Pacific Alliance 2001) and Vina (Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2001). Sexy Jay, as usual, sang and danced a number from his own CD Jay C. Bornborneo , while the vivacious Vina, giving her homage to the closing of Miss Saigon on Broadway, did her own 10-minute, naughty version of the tragic Vietnamese heroine.  Hot Chinese buffet was served, including the traditional noodle, symbol of long life. In addition, there were non-alcoholic drinks, Chinese cookies and cake. January birthday celebrants included Bill (1/21), Bob B (1/10), Irwin (1/17), Takashi (1/10), Thalia (1/7).
Thalia, Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2000 accepted her award for Entertainer of the Year 2000. Many thanks to the regular volunteer staff John C, Paul B, Henry and coordinator Ed. Thanks to Bob and Ray for some of the decorations and assistance, and thanks to Paul B, Mario and Keith for additional food. Thanks to everyone else who helped with the setup and cleanup. Next year will be the Year of the Horse (Feb 12, 2002-Jan 31, 2003).

The new Mr. and Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2001 made their musical debut since winning the crowns.  Jay and Vina performed together to Jay's original song of Diva, then each performed again individually. Host Ed sang I'll Be Home for Christmas. Jay's pop-dance numbers were from his CD titled Jay C. Bornborneo, and later sold some of his CD's after the show. Kelsey and Thalia, Mr. and Miss Asian Pacific Alliance 2000, were named Entertainers of the Year 2000. Bill G also brought his album of some social events around town, which included photos of hot, naked (non-Asian) guys. Many thanks to our chef of the evening, Jerry, for making those delicious roasted turkey and mozzarella sandwiches, and the chicken pasta with diced apples. IFW2000-CHICAGO, IL, SEPT 1-4, 2000, FRI-MON, LABOR DAY WEEKEND — About 200 people from all over the US (and a few some from foreign lands,) attended the 11th International Friendship Weekend, an annual gay Asian Pacific and friends convention. Here's a summary: FRIDAY: Official registration at the Westin Hotel, the official hotel, located in Chicago's Magnificent Mile. The Welcome Reception was at the gay Boystown neighborhood bar called Annex 3. Afterwards, guests either visited restaurants, dance clubs /bars in Boystown or hung out at the IFW Hospitality Suite back in the hotel. SATURDAY: Instead of the usual workshops in, the Ice Breaker was substituted in the morning, a kind of truth-or-consequence game designed for guests to get acquainted. Lunch was at Chinatown, where the big delegation was divided into either the Malaysian or  regular Chinese meal. Afterwards, each one had a choice of joining one of different Group Tours of Chicago: Frank Lloyd Wright's Oak Park home and studio, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Loop architectural wonders, the collection of Museums along the Waterfront, or the popular Hollywood Gay Beach on Lake Michigan. Saturday night event was held at the Westin's Cotillion Ballroom for cocktails, banquet dinner, show and disco dancing. The partying continued at either Boystown or Hospitality Suite. SUNDAY: Morning was International Friendship Alliance board meeting. Then, the traditional group photo shoot took place on the steps at the adjacent John Hancock building. The group then set out in five trolley cars for a citywide tour. In the evening, everyone trekked to Navy Pier for the dinner/dance cruise to Lake Michigan, where there were plenty of buffet food, dancing and fireworks. Later, it was another night either on the town or Hospitality Suite. MONDAY: Optional farewell brunch was held on the top of the John Hancock Building. Next year's event will be hosted by Asians and Friends Houston, while 2002 will be hosted by AF- South Florida, which will be held on a cruise ship from Miami to Bahamas.

FIRE ISLAND ESCAPADE: ASIAN INVASION AUG 26, 2000, SAT, 10AM-NIGHT — It was a terrific day: lots of sunshine, 80 degrees and no flies. About 40 people invaded Cherry Grove for the fifth annual trek to Fire Island, hosted by APANY, LYC-NJ/NYC. Eight people from Boston arrived by yacht to participate in the biggest annual Fire Island one-day gathering of Asian Pacific Islanders and their non-Asian friends. There were plenty of cold beverages and delicious food on the beach: soft drinks, iced tea, lemonade, chicken wings, fried chicken, tuna sandwiches, quiche pie, fruit salad, fresh fruits, etc. Hospitality Room was provided for attendees at the Cherry Grove Hotel for shower, rest and just plain chit-chat before dinner. At 8 pm, 20 people converged at Michael’s restaurant for a sunset dinner by the pier. Thanks to all those who attended and those who brought food and drinks. Special thanks to John C for all those iceboxes filled with food and drinks. Thanks to Mario for reserving the Hospitality Room. APANY stepped off at noon and, even with the float breaking down halfway through, made it to the end at 3 pm. Later, some of them went to Pegasus for some partying.
