CHINA
Current APAS President Lucy Chun recently attended a luncheon at the World Trade Center entitled "Doing Business in China." Zurong Wu, Chinese Consul General in Houston spoke to promote trade, investment and academic and cultural exchanges between the US and China. Fuxiao Fu of United Parcel Service; Zhang Fu Giang of North America, Inc.; Eugene Ji of the New Phoenix Trading Co., David Gan of Tulane University School of Medicine and Qiang Shen and Dai Xia of Tulane University School of Business also attended the luncheon. Wu gave a general briefing on the economic condition and investment climate in China. "Political relationship goes up and down, but the trade volume goes up annually", he said. China is the largest international trade partner of Louisiana. In 1998, Louisiana's exports to China totaled US$1.1 billion, of which $834 million was food and agricultural commodities, $210 million was chemicals and allied products, $13 million was paper products and $ 1 million was fabricated metal products.
The Lotus Lake Drikung Dharma Center, a new Tibetan Buddhist center, will hold weekly meditation practices open to the public on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. The center is located at 5811 Tchoupitoulas St. and the director, Greg Eveline, may be reached at 528-9374. The center is affiliated with the Tsao Padma Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Rewalsar, India.
Violinist Jean Wu and pianists Shi Yuan Chen, Jintbo Huang, Amy Zhang and Alisa Zan have al recently won awards from the Louisiana Federation of Music Clubs for performance in their fields. All of these young musicians are students of Joseph Pham Cuoc, a graduate of Saigon Music Conservatory and UNO.
Jinke Tang, a professor of Physics at the University of New Orleans, has been elected President of the Chinese Professional Association in New Orleans (CPANO). CPANO, a nonprofit, nonpolitical organization was founded and incorporated in 1992. The membership consists mainly of young Chinese professionals with advanced degrees from US universities, working in the Greater New Orleans area. There are also members from Vietnam and Taiwan. Among other professions, the members are physicians, lawyers,
