Siri Macallan on Role-Playing (2)Siri Macallan says, "We're going to be covering things that I don't have hard and fast answers for, necessarily ... so discussion is good." Siri Macallan says, "If everyone can have a seat, and settle down ... I'll start on my schpiel and we can all go from there." Siri Macallan says, "I'm not going to talk about how to create a character. I want to talk about playing and maintaining the ones we already have. Modus is a role playing game. It's always been one, and it always will be one." Siri Macallan says, "So when I hear players actually crabbing at others for trying to roleplay, or for being asked to stay IC, it's ... interesting." Siri Macallan says, " This should be a "safe" zone. " Siri Macallan grins. Siri Macallan says, " This should be RP heaven. Where we all feel comfortable enough to play the character we really want to play without being judged for doing so ... " Siri Macallan says, " Or for feeling like our peers are going to give us grief for getting into mysteries, or what have you. " Siri Macallan says, " We're all here to have fun. And some of our fun isn't going to be quite as intensively RP oriented as others, that's just the way it is, but no one should feel belittled because they get into their characters. " Siri Macallan says, "That's the first premise I want to go over. Feeling comfortable enough to let your RPing hair down, so to speak. " Siri Macallan asks, "Do any of you feel like if you really were to get into a character your friends would think you were some sort of a dork?" Elysia Francois shakes her head. Terra Brandford says, "Sometimes" Malorie Stevens says, "It used to be that way." Terra Brandford says, "Depends on what friends you're talking about." Terra Brandford asks, "Could I make a point really quick?" Terra Brandford glances around. Shalie MacIntosh grins at Terra Brandford. Siri Macallan nods to Terra Brandford. Angela Perez agrees with Terra Brandford. Terra Brandford says, "Okay, um, this is sort of related to what Siri's saying, sort of not..." Siri Macallan chuckles. Terra Brandford says, " But, just because someone is RPing, doesn't mean they're a GM played mystery character. " Terra Brandford ducks her head. Siri Macallan gets an excited expression on her face and lets out a hearty cheer. Terra Brandford says, "I've had that happen to me a lot, and had the RP ruined" Terra Brandford says, "And it made me REALLY mad" Malorie Stevens agrees with Terra Brandford. Shalie MacIntosh agrees with Terra Brandford. Terra Brandford says, "So don't just assume." Terra Brandford says, "K, that's all." Jess Whiterose grins at Terra Brandford. Siri Macallan says, "Heck, don't assume ever." Siri Macallan chuckles. Amanda Hunter exclaims, "i have something to say too!" Siri Macallan asks, "Amanda?" Siri Macallan grins. Terra Brandford nods to Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan takes a sip of her fizzy cola. Amanda Hunter exclaims, "ok..well ive seen the RP get out of hand..where like i say something that isnt *really* OCC and someone totally freaks out at me..and goes on and on about it..which i think interupts things a whole lot more!" Terra Brandford agrees with Amanda Hunter. Siri Macallan nods to Amanda Hunter. Karen deNorge agrees with Amanda Hunter. Siri Macallan says, "Hold that thought ... I'm going to come back to it." Terra Brandford says, "I think that if you say something they consider OOC, it should be told to you in a whisper" Terra Brandford ducks her head. Terra Brandford says, "Oops" Amanda Hunter holds the thought. Siri Macallan says, "Basically that's it. Whisper." Terra Brandford nods. Siri Macallan says, "But we're going to cover that under "disputes"." Malorie Stevens grins. Allan Bullest raises his hand. Siri Macallan says, "Allan first, then Elysia." Terra Brandford raises her hand. Siri Macallan says, "Then Terra." Allan Bullest asks, "Even though I have not been here nearly as much as I use to be, I still, as I always have, found it difficult to advance my charecter.. Heck, it still says I'm like 30, meanwhile I've been here like 5 years. Any advice?" Siri Macallan asks, "Advance as far as levels?" Allan Bullest says, "No.. As far as, just general charecter development." Allan Bullest says, "I can't age.." Allan Bullest says, "I can't shrink like an old man." Terra Brandford pats Allan on the back. Armand Chascour glares. Armand Chascour harumphs grumpily. Malorie Stevens glances at Armand Chascour. Allan Bullest says, "Just general personal changes." Terra Brandford comforts Armand Chascour. Rain Beringer grins. Allan Bullest grins at Armand Chascour. Malorie Stevens comforts Armand Chascour. Allan Bullest says, "No offense Armaand." Allan Bullest grins at Armand Chascour. Ichiko Daiumi pets Armand Chascour in a patronizing manner. Terra Brandford says, "We love you, Armand. Old shrunken man or not." Terra Brandford ducks her head. Siri Macallan says, "Age is sort of another topic too. Some people want aging, some people don't." Terra Brandford nods to Siri Macallan. Terra Brandford says, "I'd rather not have aging." Terra Brandford shrugs. Rain Beringer says, "no wrinkles" Allan Bullest says, "Im just adding that it would help with RP..." Siri Macallan says, "But developing your character is ongoing. " Allan Bullest shrugs. Armand Chascour says, "I think Trevor said that would be dealt with as the changes come" Terra Brandford nods to Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, " You don't need to age to have a character who has a solid history and acts out of the basis of that history. " Terra Brandford says, "The problem with aging is..." Terra Brandford says, "Is I think it was said in a forum from before, that sometimes its hard to RP a character a lot older than you" Allan Bullest says, "In general.. I think people just need to just be willing to RP. It takes an island effort. "It takes an island to Rp"" Terra Brandford says, "So it might make it difficult for some people to RP someone older than they originally picked." Allan Bullest nods. Siri Macallan says, "And some people just don't want to play an aging character." Siri Macallan shrugs. Serina Bastianovich agrees with Terra Brandford. Allan Bullest says, "that's true..I can't be an accurate 40 year old/." Allan Bullest says, "No matter how hard I try." Allan Bullest grins. Terra Brandford grins. Siri Macallan says, " Something that helps everyone RP better is if they love their character. " Allan Bullest says, "Or how much I drink." Amanda Hunter says, "but see say something happened to my character when they're 18..that happened just before they came to the island..well after being on the island over a year its been over a year since that thing that happened..but im still 18..it kind of messes up my story" Terra Brandford snickers at Allan Bullest. Angela Perez agrees with Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, "If you hate who you're trying to play, you won't play him or her well." Allan Bullest nods to Siri Macallan. Terra Brandford nods to Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, " And if you love your character, you'll be willing to RP him or her more fully, regardless of what sort of grief your peers may be giving you. " Siri Macallan says, " But I understand about being uncomfortable. I've RP'd situations that I've been uncomfortable with people watching. " Siri Macallan says, " But it wasn't as if I had much choice. So you do it, and you do it to the best of your ability, and you do it to the best of your character's ability. " Siri Macallan says, "It's like stage fright." Siri Macallan smiles. Terra Brandford says, "About the thing with feeling like you'll be teased or something" Terra Brandford gets a distant look on her face as she ponders. Siri Macallan nods to Terra Brandford. Terra Brandford says, "Here's my thoughts...If you're role-playing, and someone is making you uncomfortable by teasing you or being OOC, then first try whispering a nice polite umm stop to them. Most people will get the hint" Terra Brandford says, "Some people are more stubborn, and if they're that type of person, then just move yourself somewhere else." Terra Brandford shrugs. Siri Macallan nods. Siri Macallan asks, "Karen?" Karen deNorge says, "Ok....I think my question might be better for later as a discussion question, but hearing you talk about staying in character makes me wonder, because.." Karen deNorge says, "Although sometimes, okay often, I am bad about mentioning something in real life.....my character is ME....I do not role play because I am me, and the same way offline" Siri Macallan nods. Karen deNorge says, "I wondered if a lot of people are just their normal self, or if almost everyone RPs as heavily as it seems to be said here" Karen deNorge gets a distant look on her face as she ponders. Siri Macallan says, "I think it's about 50/50." Terra Brandford agrees with Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, "There are a lot of people who are just themselves in here ... but the question I want to pose is this." Siri Macallan asks, "Why be in an RP game then?" >Siri Macallan asks, "And have you tried to create and play an actual character, even if it's a spin off of yourself in some way? Even just a little way?" Siri Macallan says, "Because Modus isn't a chat room, and a lot of OOC comments are bad for the game when they're in public locales." Siri Macallan says, "But we've tried to give a lot of areas where you can sit and have those OOC conversations without bringing reality into the RPing environment. " Terra Brandford says, "But, there's a problem with them." Terra Brandford looks at Siri Macallan and shrugs her shoulders. Siri Macallan asks, "Which is?" Terra Brandford says, "It's that theyre not in a heavy travelled area" Siri Macallan smiles. Siri Macallan says, "Um, there's a reason for that." Terra Brandford exclaims, "I know that!" Terra Brandford giggles. Jess Whiterose says, "I think that's the point" Jess Whiterose chuckles. Terra Brandford says, "I'm just saying, thats why no one uses them" Malorie Stevens giggles at Terra Brandford. Terra Brandford says, "Because they like being out in the open with people passing by" Siri Macallan asks, " You all wanna know why the pub is policed so heavily? " Siri Macallan says, " Because it is a main thoroughfare, and we don't want it being OOC central. If you're going to be there, RP. If not, go elsewhere in the game. " Terra Brandford says, "But people dont because in other spots people dont pass by" Terra Brandford says, "Thats what I was trying to say." Siri Macallan says, "That's life of being in an RP game." Arianna Montagoe asks, "why be in an RP game if you get the same thing in a chat room for free?" Siri Macallan says, "I don't want to sound crabby about that, but we have a lot of people wonder why the pub gets watched so much." Siri Macallan nods to Arianna Montagoe. Siri Macallan says, "And that's the reason." Terra Brandford nods. Siri Macallan says, " If you moved the discussion here, to the Cafe, you'd get much less crankiness from the staff. " Siri Macallan grins. Jasmine Cronin says, "I'm curious, and I don't mean to put you on the spot, but can you give an example of how you rpd yourself through an uncomfortable position, or explain briefly if that's easier? I hope you don't mind." Siri Macallan says, "Okay ..." Jasmine Cronin says, "It might be useful to know." Siri Macallan says, "Well ... A couple of years back, my character was in a fairly visible spot. And everything that happened with her was watched." Serina Bastianovich blinks. Terra Brandford asks, "By who? Other players?" Siri Macallan nods to Terra Brandford. Siri Macallan says, "And the staff." Siri Macallan says, "It was like being on prime time for a few weeks. And I'm a very, very private person. So I'd notice I was being watched, and I'd get all queasy in my stomach. And I'd just cringe if another character said something personal to me that someone else could hear." Siri Macallan says, "But then I'd have to take a deep breath on this end of the keyboard, and say, "Okay, SHE wouldn't be cringing ... She'd be doing THIS. So just do it!"" Jess Whiterose grins at Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, "And I'd just do it. I call it being true to the character." Siri Macallan says, "Gotta play the character." Siri Macallan says, " The other thing is that I know what it feels like to know I've RP'd my best, and have helped others have a really GREAT time RPing too. And that makes me feel good. " Siri Macallan says, " So that gets me through the moments when I think I'm going to be judged, or I'm uncomforable about having my character's life on view. " Siri Macallan asks, "Does that help?" Siri Macallan furrows her brow. Jasmine Cronin nods. Jess Whiterose nods to Siri Macallan. Jasmine Cronin says, "That was a good example. I can understand, thanks." Jasmine Cronin smiles. Angela Perez says, "Back to what we were talking about a little while ago... I feel that unless my character is something like ME, then I can't really identify with it very well. " Siri Macallan says, "That's cool. We all build characters from what we know, or from what we imagine. " Angela Perez nods. Siri Macallan says, " All of mine have a little bit of me in them. Sometimes a lot of me. " Angela Perez asks, "But is that considered true RPing?" Siri Macallan says, "Sure. Because they're not always completely me. Sometimes they go off and do something I'd never, ever do. " Angela Perez grins at Siri Macallan. Arianna Montagoe asks, "Isn't it RPing, even if you're a charcater that's totally you, as long as you're playing them like you would be if you were here?" Siri Macallan says, "This is a question we throw around at staff meetings at times." Siri Macallan whistles a cheerful tune. Jess Whiterose grins at Arianna Montagoe. Siri Macallan says, " As long as you're playing you as if you were actually here, and not just sitting in front of a computer chatting about your day at school or the office, I consider it RPing. " Arianna Montagoe nods. Malorie Stevens says, "What you said about your character's life being on view, Siri... reminds me of something. I have played several characters in the past, some well-liked, some well-hated, and some insignificant. Each time I create someone new, I'm afraid that people will hate the character if they find out it is the person they hated..." Jess Whiterose says, "There should never be a reason for them to know" Malorie Stevens says, "But I get very deep into my characters, especially the ones I love to play." Siri Macallan nods to Malorie Stevens. Serina Bastianovich agrees with Jess Whiterose. Malorie Stevens says, "Right, but I have a lot of friends ooc who end up knowing. Word spreads, you know." Terra Brandford nods to Malorie Stevens. Malorie Stevens clears her throat. Siri Macallan says, " As Jess said, there shouldn't be a reason for them to know ... and if they can't honor the difference in character (except for the people who create separate characters to avoid their own actions) it's really their problem, not yours. " Malorie Stevens asks, "But as much as I loved to play the hated characters, it hurt when things got really messy. Is there any advice you can give to help separate your real feelings from your character?" Siri Macallan says, "Yeah, there is... and hold that thought." Siri Macallan grins. Siri Macallan asks, "Malorie, I'm going to come back to that, okay?" Julie McCoy says, "Open minds help, I think." Siri Macallan nods to Julie McCoy. Malorie Stevens says, "Sure thing, Siri." Siri Macallan asks, "Danie?" Danie Roberts says, "I just want to say that I have a few characters. The ones I can play for a long time and do play often have more of me in 'em. The others are a lot of fun, but harder to sustain, and I'm lazy. Just a comment on the other issue. I do think that if you play someone who's a lot like you, it's still valid RPing." Siri Macallan says, "As long as you have separation between island life and mainland life, I agree. If you can't keep the distinction, I don't agree." Terra Brandford says, "Okay, I find it REALLY hard lately to bring a new character into the RPing scene around here" Terra Brandford says, "Because basically everyone is either hunting, or sitting outside the pub" Arianna Montagoe nods to Terra Brandford. Terra Brandford gets a distant look on her face as she ponders. Siri Macallan says, " It takes a while to establish a character. " Terra Brandford says, "And I've TRIED to get some action outside the pub" Siri Macallan says, "It takes a lot of patience too." Terra Brandford says, "Err, some role playing" Terra Brandford says, "By like..." Siri Macallan says, "Um, the pub's not a happenin' RP hot spot, Terra." Terra Brandford says, "Mentioning how weird it was that everyone sat outside on the sidewalk" Terra Brandford nods to Siri Macallan. Arianna Montagoe raises her hand. Terra Brandford says, "I know, but its hard to find anyone else." Siri Macallan says, " And I'm not saying that to dis anyone who sits out there. " Terra Brandford seems to agree! Siri Macallan says, " I'm just saying what is a pretty well known fact. " Terra Brandford says, "I thought I could hopefully grab some attention of the people who do RP" Terra Brandford says, "And I tried a few things..." Terra Brandford wrinkles her nose. Terra Brandford says, "But they took me not seriously." Siri Macallan says, " I suggest perping around a bit, seeing who else is around ... and being willing to spend some time on your own until you find your niche as your new character. " Terra Brandford says, "And some even ignored the fact that I was attempting to role-play." Amanda Hunter says, "but if you get like that people can get offended and say whatever they have to to justify hanging out at the pub." Terra Brandford says, "Trust me, I"ve spent a lot of time alone with characters" Terra Brandford says, "And it might scare some people away who actually come to RP. The new player nights are great, cause it gives them a chance to meet other people" Terra Brandford says, "But theyre only once a month" Terra Brandford shrugs. Amanda Blair says, "It occurs to me that we are like actors on a stage...must lose ourselves as much as possible in our roles. Not worry about whether we are loved or hated, but that we are true to the character." Siri Macallan reaches over and gives Amanda Blair a triumphant high five. Amanda Blair grins. Siri Macallan says, " I think it's the difference between sitting outside and being IC with it ... and sitting outside and not doing anything or being OOC with it. " Siri Macallan says, " I don't have any problem with people sitting out side. My character does it often. " Siri Macallan says, " I just request that we all stay IC if you're out in a public locale. " Siri Macallan asks, "Rain?" Rain Beringer says, "In response to what Terra said, I have been away from the island for a long time and I have found it very hard to come back into the island and to especially play my character in the same fashion as I used to, (especially since in my day we sat in the pub,) but there is not alot of action on the island anymore and it is hard to adjust my character to the new way life is lead around on the island" Jess Whiterose smiles at Rain Beringer. Shalie MacIntosh nods to Rain Beringer. Jess Whiterose says, "I remember the old days when much good rping was done inside the pub like Rain said" Siri Macallan says, "Hmm." Avis Eastwood says, "And no-one sits outside Bebe's." Siri Macallan grins. Siri Macallan says, "They get beat on." Lisa Stone nods. Terra Brandford nods. Jon Garfield nods. Lisa Stone says, "its unhealthy now" Danie Roberts taps a black bulletproof vest. Rain Beringer says, "I just wanted to point out" Jon Garfield says, "Loitering is hazardous to your health" Siri Macallan nods to Rain Beringer. Siri Macallan says, "I'm wondering how to aid that." Rain Beringer says, "How hard it can be for some of us who have to make a transition back but already have a character in place" Siri Macallan says, "It's hard." Siri Macallan says, "I have a couple of old, old characters who haven't been in because they don't know anyone anymore, and I don't know what to do with them." Jess Whiterose nods. Rain Beringer nods to Siri Macallan. Karen deNorge exclaims, "Kill them!" Siri Macallan laughs! Siri Macallan says, "Enough of my characters die." Nina Perrson cackles gleefully. Siri Macallan asks, "Arianna, did you want to add something to that?" Siri Macallan smiles. Arianna Montagoe says, "I've been RPing for years. I've been on the island only a few days and I'd have to say this is one of the hardest times I've ever had joining an RP game. Everyone is either very close knit or not into RPing and that makes it hard because it is such a small island, which I thought would actually make the RP richer, being so small..." Siri Macallan says, "I understand." Arianna Montagoe says, "which is what Rain said but with a new character versus old" Siri Macallan says, "This is undeniably true." Arielle Drummond says, "There are people out there. It just takes time to find them." Siri Macallan asks, "Ask the Guides to show you around, introduce you a bit, maybe?" Arianna Montagoe says, "I came to the island for an RP experience not a chat room" Arianna Montagoe nods to Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, "Join in as much as you can." Arianna Montagoe says, "I mean, this is one of the friendliest places I've been, but at times it lacks that RP charm" Siri Macallan says, "Meeting people is hard ... and yes, we have a lot of insular groups here." Danie Roberts says, "But you can't blame people for wanting to spend time with people they enjoy being with." Jess Whiterose nods. Arianna Montagoe nods to Danie Roberts. Terra Brandford nods to Danie Roberts. John Mogab says, "there are close knit groups in any RPG...take DragonRealms....it is a huge game compared to this, but still has its own circles" Siri Macallan says, "No, but I can blame people for being deliberately rude to others." Siri Macallan says, "Or ignoring a politely asked question." Arianna Montagoe says, "some of that goes back to what was being said before about being scared RL of what people think in RP" Siri Macallan says, "If I was a fresh, off the boat player, I'd hope someone would take the time to answer a question or two." Danie Roberts asks, "What if your character is a rude person, tho?" Siri Macallan says, "Then don't be upset if people are rude back to you." Siri Macallan smiles. Danie Roberts nods. Siri Macallan says, "And there ARE always whispers." Jess Whiterose nods to Siri Macallan. Elysia Francois says, "I justed wanted to relay something, that may help to those who are discouraged when bringing in new characters. When I first came to the island (or back rather) I knew no one. It was like starting all over again, and it was discouraging. For weeks I hunted alone, but a parade really opened up everything to me. And it was a great opportunity to roleplay, and it allowed me to meet a lot of great people. I think time is something that really has a funny way of sorting through things. And given enough time, your characters will be able to grow and venture out when its the right time. " Nina Perrson says, "i don't think people even mean to ignore politely asked questions... they can just be paying attention to whoever they're talking to at the time, etc. some people can be unintentionally oblivious. it's just like high school here sometimes. everyone has their cliques, but if you address people one-on-one, they pay attention more, then it's easy to get everyone else's attention" Jess Whiterose winks at Elysia Francois. Siri Macallan says, "There are two sides to helping out." Arianna Montagoe says, "I don't want to give the impresion I was putting down the fact there are groups or cliques or whatever, just that with the island being so small it does make entering difficult" Siri Macallan says, "Sure, we come in to do our own thing, and sometimes we just don't want to play host." Siri Macallan says, " But remember, that we all were babes in arms once, and at some point another group took us in. " Danie Roberts nods to Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, " And it's nice to give back what we've been given. " Rain Beringer nods. Arianna Montagoe says, "exactly" Shalie MacIntosh agrees with Siri Macallan. Jean Jameison nods to Siri Macallan. Julie McCoy says, "Sly McCool took me in" Julie McCoy gets a distant look on her face as she ponders. Siri Macallan grins at Julie McCoy. Danie Roberts begins laughing at Julie McCoy! Julie McCoy says, "That was eons ago." Terra Brandford says, "Rae McCloud for me" John Mogab says, "well, i dont know about anyone else, but ive found it easy enough to penetrate circles here on the island...and ive only been here a week" John Mogab smiles. Terra Brandford says, "Well, John, some characters are more shy than others..." Terra Brandford says, "Which can make it difficult to get into groups." Danie Roberts pats John on the back. John Mogab says, "thats true.....but if anyone else here is like me, they are likely to talk to the person who is the quietest in the group" John Mogab grins. Siri Macallan asks, "Jess?" Siri Macallan asks, "Wanna wade in?" Jess Whiterose says, "Well actually most serious rpers I know will not take the time to even mention you are OOC" Jess Whiterose says, "They will move along when they see it" John Mogab says, "exactly" John Mogab smiles at Jess Whiterose. Arianna Montagoe nods to Jess Whiterose. Terra Brandford nods to Jess Whiterose. Siri Macallan says, " I dunno. I tend to whisper something. " Siri Macallan whistles a cheerful tune. Jess Whiterose says, "They frankly will say oh they are OOC, not what I came to interact with" John Mogab grins at Siri Macallan. Jess Whiterose says, "Because they can find rpers" Amanda Hunter says, "well just because someone slips OOC doesnt mean you cant RP with them" Arianna Montagoe says, "when I walk in a public area and the conversation is OOC, I tend to keep going, not point out to everyone they're OOC" Jess Whiterose says, "And that I admit is the tough part for new serious rpers" Amanda Jackson says, "I think writing profiles for the Library might be encouraging for one to RP their character" Julie McCoy asks, "Someone mentioned AOL on the comm the other day.. so I responded with "What's AOL?" Siri Macallan says, "Profiles will be the topic of Jackson's Forum in two weeks." Siri Macallan grins. Armand Chascour asks, "what happened to those profiles anyhow?" John Mogab says, "well, now you are being technical...because this game is set in a time where AOL has been inventexd" Julie McCoy says, "And someone reprimanded for asking.. although that used to be a standard way for reminding others that AOL doesn't exist here" John Mogab says, "invented" Danie Roberts coughs out a brief, NEWS 11! Siri Macallan says, "I heard that, Julie." Siri Macallan grins. Nina Perrson nods to John Mogab. Amanda Hunter says, "AOL exists..maybe not on the island..but we all came from the mainland at somepoint where aol DOES exist." Nina Perrson says, "i agree" Jess Whiterose says, "I seriously do have a hard time walking into a room and wanting to stay if it's all mainland stufr" Nina Perrson nods to Amanda Hunter. Julie McCoy nods to Siri Macallan. Amanda Jackson says, "There are computers on the isle and AOL is probably on" Julie McCoy says, "I was trying to give a hint, but was accused of being OOC" Julie McCoy furrows her brow. Jess Whiterose says, "So I move on" Siri Macallan says, "Well, saying Modus is a Game and you've been here when it was on AOL is definitely OOC." Nina Perrson says, "i think i can say that i use AOL on the mainland, but saying "i played this game on AOL" is different" Amanda Jackson agrees with Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, "Sorry, no getting around that one." Nina Perrson says, "but when someone says that, they're obviously a newbie, and i think it's just better to private comm them about it instead" Jon Garfield flips a switch on the side of his notebook computer and you hear it booting up. Jon Garfield quickly flips through the Owner's Manual of his notebook computer. Siri Macallan nods to Nina Perrson. Arianna Montagoe nods to Nina Perrson. Danie Roberts speaks into her communicator. Jon Garfield smoothly manipulates the trackball on his notebook computer, and you hear a soft **BING** and a voice announce, "You've got mail!" Jon Garfield whistles innocently to himself. Terra Brandford nods to Jon Garfield. Terra Brandford grins. Siri Macallan pokes Jon Garfield in the ribs. Amanda Hunter giggles at Jon Garfield. Siri Macallan says, "Show off." Siri Macallan grins. John Mogab grins. Terra Brandford says, "I was looking over a log from like...easter of 1998, when Semmy was around..." Terra Brandford asks, "Remember Semmy?" Shonna McCarver says, "uh huh" Julie McCoy nods to Terra Brandford. Terra Brandford says, "Well, I just wanted to know your thoughts on that whole thing, Siri" Jean Jameison nods. Siri Macallan grins at Shonna McCarver. Armand Chascour says, "she said she didnt like it but oh well" Terra Brandford says, "I thought it was good, but there was a BIG arguement that day about it" Armand Chascour grins. Armand Chascour says, "at least that was my recollection" Rain Beringer asks, "excuse me what are we talking about? who is Semmy?" Danie Roberts asks, "Can the clueless be clued in on this topic?" Danie Roberts grins. Terra Brandford says, "Like, not just Semmy in particular...Just characters like that." Terra Brandford nods to Danie Roberts. Karen deNorge says, "Terra, I think to those of us who are new, we have no clue what you are talking about" Esmeralda Beaujolais nods to Danie Roberts. Nina Perrson says, "well a comm with 983,576 buttons was a bit of a stretch" Nina Perrson snickers. Terra Brandford says, "Semmy was a mute character. And he used um buttons on his comm to say things" Terra Brandford agrees with Nina Perrson. Siri Macallan says, "Semmy rp'd someone who could only talk with the aid of a special PBR." Armand Chascour says, "He played a mute, who had buttons on his comm to talk" Danie Roberts nods. Armand Chascour presses the "Hello" button on his comm. Siri Macallan says, "And some people thought it was great, and others thought it was just irritating." Nina Perrson says, "but then he had some weird surgery and could talk, i never got that part" Rain Beringer says, "wow" Terra Brandford nods to Siri Macallan. Shonna McCarver nods to Nina Perrson. Terra Brandford asks, "So what exactly do you think of that sort of thing?" Karen deNorge asks, "Um, how did he get the comm? Was it a merchant made thing?" Jon Garfield says, "He RPed having it" Armand Chascour says, "hmm...you COULD have a mute with a Speak'N'Spell though" Terra Brandford says, "Well he did have a comm with buttons on it" Arianna Montagoe giggles at Armand Chascour. Armand Chascour types aitch-ee-ell-ell-oh on his pad. Siri Macallan says, "My view is ... unless he's hurting someone, it's his character." Terra Brandford giggles at Armand Chascour. Julie McCoy votes for irritating. Siri Macallan says, " It's your choice to ignore him or to interact with him. " Terra Brandford nods to Siri Macallan. Terra Brandford says, "But not start a whole big arguement about it" Terra Brandford shrugs. Miranda Myles says, "tap tap tap, is all I recall" Arianna Montagoe says, "the Guide I met when I first arrived was absolutely wonderful and RP'd it great" Jess Whiterose says, "The events, the doorbells, the welcomes, the announces are all volunteer time" Siri Macallan says, "So treat 'em nicely." Siri Macallan grins. Julie McCoy says, "The Guides rock." Miranda Myles says, "The really do." Nina Perrson says, "well some do" Nina Perrson rolls her eyes at Danie Roberts. Nina Perrson ducks her head. Jess Whiterose says, "And mostly it is great time spent, it is difficult when we encounter OOC at the events" Amanda Blair count chips. Julie McCoy blushes a nice shade of off-pink. John Mogab comforts Danie Roberts. Julie McCoy grins at Nina Perrson. Jon Garfield speaks into his communicator. Siri Macallan says, "I think Elysia is next, and then I'm going to move to the topic of playing bad folks." Julie McCoy says, "Who are the guides now? " Jon Garfield speaks into his communicator. Elysia Francois says, "How can we describe leveling and progressing with notoriety while staying in character? I know a lot of people tend to fall OOC when hunting when they exclaim, "I've almosted leveled!" but its really an exciting event and I know personally I like to share the fact that I am going to progress. I just need suggestions on how to do it IC." Siri Macallan says, " I always just say, I'm going to visit my trainer. " Julie McCoy says, "Good question." Danie Roberts says, "I say, 'I have an appointment with Madame Rosalie'." Jon Garfield says, "Gaining enough knowledge for a training session" Siri Macallan says, " I have a few more things to learn then I'll be visiting my personal trainer. " Jess Whiterose exclaims, "I get to train or see Maude!" Elysia Francois giggles. Nina Perrson laughs! Amanda Blair says, "I've heard some people say they finished their 5th assignment or got their 10th promotion." Danie Roberts begins laughing at Jon Garfield! Siri Macallan grins. Armand Chascour says, " I have 38000 semester credits to my next degree " Siri Macallan laughs! John Mogab chuckles. Elysia Francois giggles. Terra Brandford grins at Armand Chascour. Jon Garfield begins chuckling at Armand Chascour. Angela Perez smiles at Armand Chascour. Elysia Francois says, "Tough college" Siri Macallan says, "That's a lot of classes Armand." Elysia Francois crosses her eyes. Armand Chascour nods. Danie Roberts says, "Instead of 'what do you have in evasion?', it's easy enough to ask how many classes you've taken or something." Siri Macallan says, "Okay, let's talk about playing bad guys." Siri Macallan says, "And let me spit some of this out before we start on comments." Siri Macallan says, "First, I'm going to say this again ... Good or bad, you have to love your character. " Siri Macallan says, " Taking the bad path is hard. Most of us don't like being disliked. And I'm sorry, but most bad characters are not liked. " Jon Garfield says, "Unless they're realllllllly slick, like certain mysterious bad guys we've met" Siri Macallan says, " So if you're going to play someone on the rotten side, just understand you're going to be hated. And don't be ticked off because you are. That's just how it goes. " Siri Macallan says, " If your feelings get hurt easily, don't play someone who is going to get negative attention. It's as simple as that. " Terra Brandford asks, "But what if people think youre just trying to be a jerk?" Terra Brandford says, "like YOU not your character" Siri Macallan says, "Well, that's part of it." Jess Whiterose says, "They shouldn't know it is you" Siri Macallan says, " There are a couple of things to remember though about playing people who aren't "nice". " Siri Macallan says, " The first thing is this ... " Siri Macallan says, " People will REPORT you for being a jerk. " Amanda Blair begins laughing at Siri Macallan! Siri Macallan says, " And we, the staff WILL watch you to make sure you're RPing and not just harassing. " Siri Macallan says, " There is a fine line. " Siri Macallan says, " If someone tells you that they do not want to be involved in that sort of RPing, BACK OFF. " Siri Macallan says, " It's their right to not get involved in your storyline. " Siri Macallan says, " Playing bad does not mean you get to step beyond the policies. " Siri Macallan says, " Don't pout if you are called a jerk when you've been acting like a jerk. " Siri Macallan says, " No one likes a sore loser. " Tate deBain grins at Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, " I want to tell you a little bit about my FAVORITE bad boy character. He was played by someone in GS3 ooooh, ages ago. " Siri Macallan says, "In the stone age. Seven years ago or so." Siri Macallan says, " His name was Sagan. And he was a thief. And he stole from everyone. His friends included. " Siri Macallan says, " He was cold, he was rude, he was nasty. " Jess Whiterose begins chuckling at Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, " He was the BEST rotten character I'd ever met. " Siri Macallan says, " But he DID have friends. " Siri Macallan says, " And he did have honor, for a thief. " Siri Macallan says, " He played with great finesse. " Jimmy Bones says, "and NOONE messed with his friends" Brenda Star raises an eyebrow. Jon Garfield nods to Jess Whiterose. Jon Garfield says, "He's the slick one I was referring to earlier" Terra Brandford agrees with Amanda Hunter. Siri Macallan says, " He did not break policy. He did not use vulgarity. " Jess Whiterose grins at Amanda Hunter. Danie Roberts speaks into her communicator. Jimmy Bones nods to Siri Macallan. Brenda Star nods to Siri Macallan. Danie Roberts speaks into her communicator. Siri Macallan says, " He backed off when characters whispered that they didn't want to RP with him. " Miranda Myles speaks into her communicator. Jess Whiterose grins at Siri Macallan. Terra Brandford says, "Once there was this one guy I ran into on OVR that was really cool...He was totally rude and sexist, but it was fun." Amanda Blair writes a few lines in a legal notepad. Siri Macallan says, " And he didn't care if other characters hated him. " Terra Brandford nods to Jess Whiterose. Armand Chascour says, "you can meet okay villains, as long as they aren't out to be Public Enemy Number 1, like Travolta" Terra Brandford says, "I think a lot of people, me included, tend to forget that the people hate their characters, not you yourself." Siri Macallan says, " And to those of us who were his close friends, we knew he was evil for a reason. and we knew he actually had a heart in there somewhere. " Siri Macallan says, " So it CAN be done. " Miranda Myles says, "Yeah, just look at Remi" Siri Macallan says, " And it can be a very, incredibly rich RPing experience. " Jon Garfield chuckles. Siri Macallan begins chuckling at Miranda Myles. Jimmy Bones says, "Rpin is all about bein your self! gosh dang it i wanna be who i am! call me diffrent or call me a clone i don't care! i am gunna be ME, i am gunna be what mood i am in! so love me, hate me, cuz you aint gunna break me! hehe" Arianna Montagoe says, "that's why this is fantasy and we all don't really get paid for hanging out on an island" Siri Macallan says, " But you have to be willing to take chances, get messy and be unpopular. " Armand Chascour says, "I've been two bad boys in the past" Terra Brandford just applauded Armand Chascour. Jon Garfield chuckles. Armand Chascour says, "one was a doctor character who I brought on to explain armand's temporary absence" Armand Chascour wheezes. Jon Garfield nods to Armand Chascour. Siri Macallan grins. Armand Chascour wheezes. Siri Macallan says, "I remember him." Armand Chascour coughs. Jon Garfield says, "I remember him" Jon Garfield says, "Freaked Ed out" Siri Macallan nods. Armand Chascour says, "which was just annoying for one night" Jean Jameison grins at Armand Chascour. Jon Garfield says, "Thought he was out to get him" Siri Macallan says, "He was horrid." Siri Macallan grins. Siri Macallan says, "It was great." Armand Chascour says, "but I seriously tried to be another bad guy" Armand Chascour says, "a general lowlife loser named Chester something or other, and I had hopes for him..." Ichiko Daiumi says, "I'm no good at being bad.." Jess Whiterose glances around. Armand Chascour says, "thought he might last to build a used car lot someday" Armand Chascour says, "but there really wasnt much to develop his character out..." Siri Macallan says, " A lot of being "bad" comes from past history ... the way the character views his world, and his place in it. " Armand Chascour says, "He could either catch crooks, or be a bounty hunter, or deliver" Armand Chascour nods. Jess Whiterose chuckles. Jess Whiterose pats Armand on the back. Julie McCoy asks, "You mentioned the pub not being a rp hotspot. Where ARE the rp hotspots?" Julie peers quizzically at Siri. Siri Macallan says, " And it's not even history we all have to know about. " Armand Chascour asks, "does arrests HAVE to be only a punishment?" Jimmy Bones says, "there IS a diffrince from being bad and just NOT careing.. some people are just cold.. not nessicarily bad.." Siri Macallan says, "No. I've RP'd people who actually play out their crimes and arrests." Jimmy Bones says, "siri i have a question.." Karen deNorge says, "Siri, I want to go to jail and see what it is like, without paying a fine" Karen deNorge asks, "Can we have jail tours?" Armand Chascour says, "ok, I'd like to see situations where we can stray and get arrested" Armand Chascour says, "like maybe a sting operation or some such" Julie McCoy nods to Armand Chascour. Armand Chascour says, "the only time I got arrested was for saying "whore" over the comm" Siri Macallan says, "I've actually thought about a sting operation." Siri Macallan whistles a cheerful tune. Armand Chascour says, "not really character developing" Siri Macallan says, "But that's to be worked into a mystery later." Brian Indiana says, "like when we tried to break into Cobblers and security came" Armand Chascour smirks. Brian Indiana winks at Siri Macallan. Jon Garfield says, "Take a cue from Alice in the last mystery. Get drunk and slap people and hope for a harrassment charge" Jon Garfield chuckles. Armand Chascour says, "how bought as a brief event? say someone offers to sell a stolen shotgun" Armand Chascour says, "and the bidders get arrested" Armand Chascour grins. Siri Macallan says, "Sounds like a mystery you need to get with Rebekah on, Armand." Armand Chascour says, "ok" Armand Chascour grins. Armand Chascour says, "I loved the day the cops enforced the loitering ordinance outside the pub" Karen deNorge exclaims, "Armand, what happened? That sounds cool!" Armand Chascour says, "people's names were broadcast as wanted over comm for loitering. You could arrest them for bounty money" Siri Macallan says, "If you're interested in creating a less than polite citizen, and don't really know where to start, you might come to the next forum and see what Jackson's got for helping to develop background." Karen deNorge exclaims, "I'd run and hide!" Siri Macallan says, " Let me give an illustration on why background is important ... " Siri Macallan says, " Okay think about the first three Star Wars movies. Darth Vader was just plain ol' bad. Mean, nasty, evil, bad. " Armand Chascour says, "now he's adorable" Siri Macallan says, " It's not until the new movie, that we see how come he's going to be like that. And it turns a two dimensional character into a three dimensional one. So even though we didn't know, all that motivation was there from the start. " Danie Roberts says, "You know, there's something to be said for not spilling everything at once." Danie Roberts nods to Siri Macallan. Armand Chascour nods. Terra Brandford says, "I was just reading about how like...Frederick something or other of England used to all be into poetry and stuff. Until his dad forced him to watch a beheading Then he all changed to mean" Siri Macallan says, " So you don't have to dump your background on people. Sometimes it's enough for YOU to know why your character does what he or she does. " Armand Chascour says, "I think it would be fun if Blackburn launched some surprise 'street sweeps' for loitering, profanity and nudity" Jess Whiterose agrees with Siri Macallan. Armand Chascour says, "we could decide what sort of tourist we are" Terra Brandford grins. Jess Whiterose says, "discovery is a mystery, and we love mysteries" Amanda Jackson says, "oh geez no Armand" Armand Chascour says, "an offender, a collaborator, or a Ken Starr" Danie Roberts asks, "Lazy, profane, or nekkid?" Armand Chascour grins. Amanda Blair exclaims, "Blackburn is never here! Nor is Stoyanov!" Nina Perrson says, "loitering arrests are NOT cool" Nina Perrson coughs. Terra Brandford grins at Nina Perrson. Brenda Star laughs! Armand Chascour says, "Some people would hide loiterers and drunks" Siri Macallan chuckles. Armand Chascour says, "I just think it would be a chance to RP if for once we could arrest each other for money." Siri Macallan says, " Something that ties into playing rotten people is disagreements. And I'd like to go over that a bit. " Siri Macallan says, " There are two sorts of disagreements. One is IC and island related, and the other is OOC and off island related. The second shouldn't be a factor here. " Siri Macallan says, " If it concerns something that occurred off island, don't bring it here. " Siri Macallan says, " Do a mental check before you log in. " Siri Macallan says, " If you're ticked off at someone, and your CHARACTER doesn't have a reason to be, let it go. Leave it at the office. " Siri Macallan says, " As for IC disagreements, if you don't want to play them out, tell the other person so in a whisper. " Siri Macallan says, "They need to respect that." Armand Chascour says, "then the IC argument becomes an OC argument" Siri Macallan says, " If they're all for indulging in an IC argument, go for it. But understand, other's may tell you to shut the heck up. " Siri Macallan chuckles. Tate deBain says, "Another interesting twist in this whole thing could be, say, a character who's having a bad...I mean, we all cop attitudes in real life, even though we're really nice. Or some of us.." Tate deBain grins. Siri Macallan says, "Hey, that's cool. Just understand that if your character takes his bad day out on someone else, there will be repercussions. " Tate deBain says, "So, it'd be interesting to see a character who's usually very nice, all of a sudden become really jerky." Terra Brandford says, "as long as they have a good reason behind it" Danie Roberts nods to Tate deBain. Siri Macallan says, " It goes back to social expectations. " Siri Macallan says, " If you're a jerk, people will treat you like one. " Siri Macallan says, "Something that was brought up earlier ..." Siri Macallan says, " How to keep off island stuff off island. " Siri Macallan says, " Do a mental check before you come into the game. " Siri Macallan asks, " How many of you think about who you are going to play before you actually log on? " Karen deNorge says, "Not me" Jess Whiterose raises his hand. Tate deBain says, "Me either." Tate deBain blushes a nice shade of off-pink. Amanda Blair raises her hand. Amanda Hunter gets a distant look on her face as she ponders. Brenda Star says, "Me" Amanda Jackson raises her hand. Rain Beringer raises her hand. Brenda Star raises her hand. Esmeralda Beaujolais raises her hand. Angela Perez says, "Once in a while.." Arianna Montagoe raises her hand. Miranda Myles says, "I don't, because I am just always me." Matt Browne says, "only have one character so i don't have much choice" Siri Macallan says, " That's one of the BEST ways to keep off island stuff where it belongs. " Siri Macallan says, " Just taking the time to figure out who you are here. " Danie Roberts nods to Siri Macallan. Jess Whiterose says, "And always into your environment here on the island" Siri Macallan says, " Consciously taking down the mask you're going to use, and putting it on ... letting all the other stuff fall by the way side. " Siri Macallan says, " That's what actors do before going on stage. " Rain Beringer says, "personally I take my character and try to be some of the things I want to be in real life" Siri Macallan says, " They assume their characters. " Siri Macallan nods to Rain Beringer. Jess Whiterose grins at Rain Beringer. Siri Macallan says, "I do too." Jess Whiterose says, "Detective Jess is an ideal" Rain Beringer says, "I wish I were this quiet in real life" Siri Macallan says, " So for the next week or so, before you log on, think about who you're playing. " Siri Macallan says, " Maybe review your character's history, if you have one. " Siri Macallan says, " Think about leaving the homework behind. Or the office, or the kids, if you can. " Siri Macallan chuckles. Amanda Hunter says, "i kind of think of my character as an..extremely enhanced version of me..like certain characteristics i have RL i have here but they're much more defined or exaggerated." Siri Macallan asks, " Once you've put the mask on, how do you keep the little bit of separation needed so that you don't take everything that happens to your character personally? " Jess Whiterose says, "you think with your character's mind" Siri Macallan asks, " So if Jess suddenly started yelling at my character, how do I not take it as an attack on Siri? " Siri Macallan says, " It's hard not to take it personally. " Tate deBain says, "Well, once you've put on the mask during the game.. I think when you take it off, it's a little easier.." Siri Macallan says, " Really hard. " Jess Whiterose says, "I would never yell at you Siri, I um have been in awe" Siri Macallan says, " But as Tate says, being able to consciously say, "I'm done for right now, I'm me not <such and such character> helps. " Siri Macallan says, " But if you're really in character, it's easy to be hurt. " Amanda Hunter agrees with Siri Macallan. Siri Macallan says, " And conversely, it's easy to feel what your characters feel. " Rain Beringer says, "its like a friend you are sad when your friends are hurting" Siri Macallan says, " That's why so many "romantic" couples on the stage translate into off stage romances. Feelings bleed over. " Jess Whiterose says, "sure it is, your characters feel unless..they are Ghent" Jon Garfield begins chuckling at Jess Whiterose. Siri Macallan says, " It's really, truly important to think about what you're feeling. Ask yourself why. " Siri Macallan says, "Movies are harder. Stage actors get to be mushy more easily. They have all that rehearsal time." Siri Macallan says, " Show-mances are very common and they're very common in here too. " Jess Whiterose says, "they have a script too" Siri Macallan exclaims, "Which brings me to my next subject!" Siri Macallan says, "Aren't I clever." Siri Macallan whistles a cheerful tune. John Mogab grins at Siri Macallan. Tate deBain grins. Rain Beringer grins. Jon Garfield says, "segue" Arianna Montagoe says, "if you can think of it like a movie that you watch and cry over or get upset about and then when you shut it off it's over and done and you go on with your real life" Siri Macallan says, " A couple of years
ago I ran an RP forum on Romance in the Island. It's always a weird
subject to talk about, because it's such a darn personal thing.
