Bible Interpretation

CLC = Christian Lacking Compassionr,  AR = Animal Rights

AR: Ex 20:13, "Thou shalt not kill."

CLC: That refers to murder. It is not murder when you kill an animal for food.

AR: My bible says quote - unquote: "thou shalt not kill." Do you interpret other commandments in a similar way that allow exceptions for pleasure. In other words, is cheating someone out of material goods OK as long as it is legal and not directly stealing?

AR: OK, your interpretation allows for billions upon billions of animals to be tortured, abused, and killed simply for pleasure; so "good" men can enjoy the experience of putting dead animal body parts into their mouths.

CLC: You just pick and choose passages to support your animal rights agenda. You have to look at the bible in the whole context.

AR:  "Why should Biblical verses that show divine approval of animal abuse set an everlasting precedent while passages showing divine approval of the murder of men, woman, and children do not?  We cannot justify animal atrocities on the authority of the Bible unless we are also willing to justify human atrocities on the same basis." ("The Dominion of Love," by Norm Phelps, page 15) <<--- This book is highly recommended.

AR:  Jesus continually revealed himself a God of compassion whose concern extended to all creatures. The wisdom of God's dietary guidance presented in Gen. 1:29 is based in spirituality, morality, and science. Admittedly, we have to interpret what the bible says. Doesn't it seem prudent to err on the side of compassion when we interpret the bible?

AR: I do not believe the bible should be used to justify horrific torture and killing for pleasure. I do not believe that Jesus would approve of that. Wouldn't an atheist who abstains from meat for reasons of compassion, be living a more moral life than one that justifies torture and killing with their religion?

AR: OK, if I am the one picking and choosing passages from the bible to suit my position, I would like to ask you two questions. Is one of the reasons you are not a homosexual is because God said in Lev. 20:13 that man should not lie down with mankind? If the answer is yes, my next question is do you eat bacon, Lev. 11:7 says swine is unclean and should not be eaten? If you eat bacon, I think you are guilty of picking and choosing bible passages.

AR: Jesus said Mt. 5:7 "the merciful shall be shown mercy." If you eat the flesh of God's creatures, you are not merciful. It seems hypocritical of us to ask God for mercy when we are not willing to extend mercy to his creatures.

CLC: You are very self righteous to call me a selfish primitive murderer.

AR: Matthew 5:10: Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

CLC: Look God put animals here for our use, a good example is Gen. 3:21: "Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them."

AR: The text of Gen. 3:21 says nothing about killing animals for their skin. Those animals likely died of natural causes and the remaining skins were used as clothing. If you are able to interpret the bible in a selfish manner, I should be able to interpret the bible in a compassionate manner.

AR:  Would it be so wrong to interpret the bible in a compassionate manner at every opportunity??
